Book Development Discourse and Global History

Download or read book Development Discourse and Global History written by Aram Ziai and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The manner in which people have been talking and writing about ‘development’ and the rules according to which they have done so have evolved over time. Development Discourse and Global History uses the archaeological and genealogical methods of Michel Foucault to trace the origins of development discourse back to late colonialism and notes the significant discontinuities that led to the establishment of a new discourse and its accompanying industry. This book goes on to describe the contestations, appropriations and transformations of the concept. It shows how some of the trends in development discourse since the crisis of the 1980s – the emphasis on participation and ownership, sustainable development and free markets – are incompatible with the original rules and thus lead to serious contradictions. The Eurocentric, authoritarian and depoliticizing elements in development discourse are uncovered, whilst still recognizing its progressive appropriations. The author concludes by analysing the old and new features of development discourse which can be found in the debate on Sustainable Development Goals and discussing the contribution of discourse analysis to development studies. This book is aimed at researchers and students in development studies, global history and discourse analysis as well as an interdisciplinary audience from international relations, political science, sociology, geography, anthropology, language and literary studies. Download or read book Design Discourse written by Victor Margolin and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1989-09-15 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The editor has gathered together a body of writing in the emerging field of design studies. The contributors argue in different ways for a rethinking of design in the light of its cultural significance and its powerful position in today's society. The collection begins with a discussion of the various expressions of opposition to the modernists' purist approach toward design. Drawing on postmodernist theory and other critical strategies, the writers examine the relations among design, technology, and social organization to show how design has become a complex and multidisciplinary activity. The second section provides examples of new methods of interpreting and analysing design, ranging from rhetoric and semiotics to phenomenology, demonstrating how meaning is created visually. A final section related to design history shifts its emphasis to ideological frameworks such as capitalism and patriarchy that establish boundaries for the production and use of design.

Book Tropes for the Past

Download or read book Tropes for the Past written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decades, there has been an intense debate on the relationship between literature and historiography, often linked to the debate between “empiricists” and “postmodernists”. The aim of this collective work is to address this debate, and to search for new ways of thinking and encountering the past. The key note for the book comes from Hayden White, one of the leading academic figures, whose role in launching the contemporary history/literature debate has been crucial. It is followed by three critical readings of his work, all suggesting new ways to apply or challenge his views. In other chapters of the book, history / literature question is then addressed from three points of view: narrativity, history as literature, and literature as history. Tropes for the Past is an ideal introduction to the literature/historiography debate and Hayden White’s role in it. It will be of use for all students and scholars in the philosophy of history and in historically oriented literary, cultural, and social studies.

Book Methods of Critical Discourse Analysis

Download or read book Methods of Critical Discourse Analysis written by Ruth Wodak and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2001 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed as an introduction to Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and gives an overview of the various theories and methods associated with this sociolinguistic approach. It also introduces the reader to the leading figures in CDA and the methods to which they are most closely related. The text aims to provide a comprehensive description of the individual methods, an understanding of the theories to which methods refer and a comparative treatment of each of these methods so that students may be able to determine which is the most appropriate to select for their particular research question. Given the balance between theory and application, plus the intended audience - no previous knowledge of CDA is assumed - Methods of Critical Discourse Analysis should be useful reading for both students and researchers in the fields of linguistics, sociology, social psychology and the social sciences in general.

Download or read book Mystifying the Monarch written by Jeroen Deploige and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The power of monarchs has traditionally been as much symbolic as actual, rooted in popular imagery of sovereignty, divinity, and authority. In Mystifying the Monarch, a distinguished group of contributors explores the changing nature of that imagery—and its political and social effects—in Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day. They demonstrate that, rather than a linear progression where perceptions of rulers moved inexorably from the sacred to the banal, in reality the history of monarchy has been one of constant tension between mystification and demystification.

Book Rethinking Labor History

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fundamentals guiding labor historians are under scrutiny today as never before. The field has attempted to uncover the socioeconomic conditions that produced labor militancy and class consciousness, with scholars focusing on proletarianization---the loss of control over the production process---as the key to class conflict. Currently, this entire approach is being questioned. In Rethinking Labor History, nine well-known French labor historians join the debate. Advocates of both revisionist Marxism and discourse analysis are represented, and examples of empirical research emerging from the theoretical disputes are included.

Book The Content of the Form

Download or read book The Content of the Form written by Hayden White and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 1990-08-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hayden White probes the notion of authority in art and literature and examines the problems of meaning—its production, distribution, and consumption—in different historical epochs. In the end, he suggests, the only meaning that history can have is the kind that a narrative imagination gives to it. The secret of the process by which consciousness invests history with meaning resides in "the content of the form," in the way our narrative capacities transform the present into a fulfillment of a past from which we would wish to have descended.

Book Discourse on History

Download or read book Discourse on History written by Job Roberts Tyson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourse on History Gentlemen, I cordially thank your Society for its complimentary resolution of the 12th of July, respecting my Address. A copy of it could not be sent for the printer, as requested, during your vacation. Engagements and absences must plead for the delay since. On the main topic of the Discourse I feel some solicitude. It is a great question, on which volumes could be written. No permanent injury, it is hoped, will be sustained from my inadequate enforcement of its claims to your notice, and now, through the press, to the American public. I have persuaded myself that a historical literature of our own would excite and diffuse a deeper interest in our domestic annals, and inspire a more ardent and rational love of country. The spirit of this department would be transfused into every other. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
