Book On the Street where You Live Victoria s early roads and railways

Download or read book On the Street where You Live Victoria s early roads and railways written by Danda Humphreys and published by Heritage House Publishing Co. This book was released on 2000 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-1800s, Victoria grew from a fur-trading post into a provincial capital--the jewel in British Columbia's golden crown. Meanwhile, many of the early residents, happy to leave the Hudson's Bay Company behind, followed simple trails from the fort or discovered new routes of their own. In her first book, Danda Humphreys introduced readers to some of the people who forged those pioneer pathways. Now she takes us another step back in time to the roads and railways that connected the original city's core to today's suburbs. From Saanich to Sooke, street names tell stories of intrigue and adventure: Rowland Avenue, named for the farm labourer with a sinister sideline: hangman for the HBC. Joan Crescent, where coal baron Robert Dunsmuir's widow once resided in solitary splendour in a castle called Craigdarroch. Sidney Avenue, close to where the Brethour brothers donated land for the northern terminus of the "Cordwood Express," first train to link the city with the Saanich Peninsula and the islands in the Strait of Georgia. In this second book in her On the Street Where You Live trilogy, Danda once again combines her passion for the past with a penchant for lively prose to bring you stories about Victoria's pioneers. You know the streets; now meet the people--their lives, their loves and the legends they left behind.

Book Preacher of Grace

  • Author : Anthony Dupont
  • Publisher : BRILL
  • Release : 2014-07-17
  • ISBN : 9004278648
  • Pages : 245 pages

Download or read book Preacher of Grace written by Anthony Dupont and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-07-17 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Augustine of Hippo (354-430) became known as the ‘doctor of grace’. He developed his theory of divine grace mainly in his systematic treatises directed against the Pelagians (ca. 411-430). Did he however also preach about this complex, and at first sight ‘demoralizing’, issue in his sermons to the people? In his previous book (BSCH 59), Anthony Dupont studied the profile of the treatment of gratia in the anti-Pelagian sermones ad populum. In a Preacher of Grace Dupont offers an account of the presence of the theme of grace in Augustine’s sermones not situated in the Pelagian controversy. He first studies sermons preached on important liturgical feasts, which belong to the (non-polemical) pastoral preaching genre. They are distributed throughout the 40 years of Augustine’s preaching activity, and are Christological in content and moralising in intention. Secondly, he examines sermons situated in the Donatist controversy, preceding the anti-Pelagian sermons chronologically and differing from them in terms of content. This research provides a global picture of the presence and treatment of gratia in Augustine’s sermones and clarifies the interaction between context, audience and preaching genre on the one hand, and the theme of grace as a whole on the other. It also contributes to the debate on (dis)continuity in Augustine’s thought on grace.

Book Pigeon on a Hill

  • Author : Jonathan Stepp
  • Publisher : WestBow Press
  • Release : 2014-09-26
  • ISBN : 1449784003
  • Pages : 237 pages

Download or read book Pigeon on a Hill written by Jonathan Stepp and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2014-09-26 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no doubt, it is first and foremost the story of Jonathans journey battling cancer. But perhaps even more, it is a book of lessons. Lessons in Hope, and the power it has to change minds and hearts. Friendship, and what is means to care for others. Joy, and the obstacles it can overcome. Trust, because, after all, the doctors need lots of it. Faith, and the miracles God can work. I feel privileged to have played even a small role in the story. The view I was afforded makes me certain that those characteristics are not only true of the book, but that all involved with Jonathan from 2008 to 2009 felt part of them too. Praise God!
