A spoken word becomes a thought. A thought becomes a dream. A dream becomes an explosion of letters—letters that tell the story of one person. Every person’s life is a letter. Some letters bear sorrow, while others bring tidings of joy. There is hope! Letters are written by pen, others on the heart. Such is this book, A Heart’s Inscriptions.

Download or read book The Book of the Heart written by Eric Jager and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2000-08 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's increasingly electronic world, we say our personality traits are "hard-wired" and we "replay" our memories. But we use a different metaphor when we speak of someone "reading" another's mind or a desire to "turn over a new leaf"—these phrases refer to the "book of the self," an idea that dates from the beginnings of Western culture. Eric Jager traces the history and psychology of the self-as-text concept from antiquity to the modern day. He focuses especially on the Middle Ages, when the metaphor of a "book of the heart" modeled on the manuscript codex attained its most vivid expressions in literature and art. For instance, medieval saints' legends tell of martyrs whose hearts recorded divine inscriptions; lyrics and romances feature lovers whose hearts are inscribed with their passion; paintings depict hearts as books; and medieval scribes even produced manuscript codices shaped like hearts. "The Book of the Heart provides a fresh perspective on the influence of the book as artifact on our language and culture. Reading this book broadens our appreciation of the relationship between things and ideas."—Henry Petroski, author of The Book on the Bookshelf

Book What a Body Can Do

Download or read book What a Body Can Do written by Ben Spatz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-03-05 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In What a Body Can Do, Ben Spatz develops, for the first time, a rigorous theory of embodied technique as knowledge. He argues that viewing technique as both training and research has much to offer current debates over the role of practice in the university, including the debates around "practice as research." Drawing on critical perspectives from the sociology of knowledge, phenomenology, dance studies, enactive cognition, and other areas, Spatz argues that technique is a major area of historical and ongoing research in physical culture, performing arts, and everyday life.

Book The Royal Inscriptions of Am l Marduk 561 560 BC Neriglissar 559 556 BC and Nabonidus 555 539 BC Kings of Babylon

Download or read book The Royal Inscriptions of Am l Marduk 561 560 BC Neriglissar 559 556 BC and Nabonidus 555 539 BC Kings of Babylon written by Frauke Weiershäuser and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2020-11-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amēl-Marduk (561–560 BC), Neriglissar (559–556 BC), and Nabonidus (555–539 BC) were the last native kings of Babylon. In this modern scholarly edition of the complete extant corpus of royal inscriptions from each of their reigns, Frauke Weiershäuser and Jamie Novotny provide updated and reliable editions of the texts. The kings of the Neo-Babylonian Empire left hundreds of official inscriptions on objects such as clay cylinders, bricks, paving stones, vases, and stelae. These writings, ranging from lengthy narratives enumerating the deeds of a monarch to labels identifying a ruler as the builder of a given structure, supplement and inform our understanding of the empire. Beginning with a historical introduction to the reigns of these three kings and the corpus of inscriptions, Weiershäuser and Novotny then present each text with an introduction, a photograph of the inscribed object, the Akkadian text in a newly collated transliteration, an English translation, catalogue data, commentary, and an updated bibliography. Additionally, Weiershäuser and Novotny provide new translations of several related Akkadian texts and chronicles. Featuring meticulous yet readable transliterations and translations that have been carefully collated with the originals, this book will be the standard edition for scholars and students of Assyriology, the Neo-Babylonian dialect, and the Neo-Babylonian Empire for decades to come.

Book Inscription and Modernity

Download or read book Inscription and Modernity written by John Kenneth MacKay and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2006-09-19 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inscription and Modernity charts the vicissitudes of inscriptive poetry produced in the midst of the great and catastrophic political, social, and intellectual upheavals of the late 18th to mid 20th centuries. Drawing on the ideas of Geoffrey Hartman, Perry Anderson, Fredric Jameson, and Jacques Rancià ̈re among others, John MacKay shows how a wide range of Romantic and post-Romantic poets (including Wordsworth, Clare, Shelley, Hölderlin, Lamartine, Baudelaire, Blok, Khlebnikov, Mandelstam, and Rolf Dieter Brinkmann) employ the generic resources of inscription both to justify their writing and to attract a readership, during a complex historical phase when the rationale for poetry and the identity of audiences were matters of intense yet productive doubt.

  • Pages : 236 pages

Download or read book The Wrath that Came written by Jack E. Brush and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wrath that Came alludes to the preaching of John the Baptist in Mt. 3:7, which serves as the starting point for an analysis of evil and wrath in contemporary society. After establishing the undeniable and inexplicable reality of evil, this book discusses the futile attempts to reconcile evil with the reality of God as well as the modern secularization of evil through psychology, medicine, and philosophy. The primitive concept of divine wrath as “brimstone and fire” is presented, but then rejected in favour of the insight of the Apostle Paul. According to Paul, the wrath of God is manifested not in catastrophic events, but rather in his withdrawal – the silent response to evil. Finally, an analysis of the self demonstrates that evil and wrath have both an individual and a societal dimension.

Book The Great Karnak Inscription of Merneptah

Download or read book The Great Karnak Inscription of Merneptah written by Colleen Manassa and published by Yale Egyptology. This book was released on 2004-12-31 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Karnak Inscription of Merneptah's 5th regnal year, the longest surviving continuous monumental text from Egypt, describes the combined Libyan and Sea People invasion of Egypt c.1208 BCE. This new study, the first complete commentary on this long but unfortunately damaged text, begins with a translation of the text, accompanied by detailed notes. The study considers specific military aspects of the inscription alongside its religious background. A grammatical analysis of the Great Karnak Inscription also sheds new light on the grammar of Ramesside monumental texts. Reviews for this volume: "...a very useful study of a highly important historical text, largely neglected hitherto.'" - K A Kitchen, Book List (2005) "...should be of interest to anyone studying issues relating to international relations of the period, aspects of military conflict in the later New Kingdom, or the monumental grammar of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Dynasties [...] The welcome inclusion of the complete hieroglyphic text should be of great use to anyone wishing to study the content and grammar of this inscription for themselves." - Joshua Roberson, Journal of the American Research Center in Egypt, Vol. XL (2005)
