Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of the Yao Language During the past twelve years the Mission presses at Blantyre and Domasi have produced a supply of educational works for the use of their schools, while the British and Foreign Bible Society has completed their version of the New Testament in Yao. For some years the first edition of this handbook has been out of print, and as applications for it have been frequent, it has been deemed advisable to re-issue it in a new and enlarged form. The growing interest in the country shown by the increasing developments of the missionary and commercial enterprises, makes the study of the native language a matter of duty on the part of all whose occupation brings them in contact with native life. Almost no alterations have been found necessary in Part I. Beyond a few additional illustrations of points in grammatical structure that seemed to require further elucidation. In Part II. Various additions and alterations have been made, enlarging the scope of the vocabulary, and modifying the meaning of not a few terms. Several omissions, natural in a first edition of a vocabulary of any language, have been supplied, and the work thus rendered more complete. Book A Yao Grammar Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Yao Grammar Classic Reprint written by Meredith Sanderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Yao Grammar The Y ao tribe is, at the present day, so scattered throughout East Central Africa, that the language is inevitably becoming broken up into dialects. I have been mostly associated with the Machinga Yao settled in Nyasaland, but judging by the speech of individuals of other branches of the tribe whom I have met, the dialects differ rather in vocabulary and idiom than in grammar. In other words, though some expressions used in this book may be peculiar to the M achinga Yao, from whom I have obtained them, the grammar is that of the language common to all Yaos. With regard to the arrangement of the subject matter, I have covered as much ground as is feasible in the first few chapt in order to enable the student to begin speaking the language as soon as possible. This has inevitably resulted in discontinuity, but I venture to hope that the advantages of this arrange ment will be found to outweigh its drawbacks.
