Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Greek Sculpture, Vol. 2 In dealing with the later portion of the history of sculpture, I have endeavoured to' follow the same principles as in the earlier portion, and consequently I am again precluded from the discussion of many interesting problems as to which I do not feel justified in expressing a dogmatic opinion, while I have not space to give, even in summary, the arguments on each side. I regret that I am unable to fulfil my conditional promise of an appendix on the discoveries of the French excavators at Delphi, no official publication having as yet been issued. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Greek Sculpture, Vol. 2 of 2 IT may be that an acquaintance with the personality of an artist, does not promote in the end a true judgment of his work. But we cannot deny that it has often furnished the pages of the historian with charm and vivacity. The History of Greek Sculpture presents no such opportunity. It has no Lives to beguile the student along an arduous path. Only here and there an incident, handed down on mostly a dubious authority, breaks the narrative of work done and the examination of what remains of it to our day. The sculptors of ancient Greece seem to have lost themselves in their art, and this might have been a less misfortune for us, if it also had not since their time disappeared in a great measure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Sculpture With Story and Song The object of my book is twofold; to awaken in boys and girls an interest in Greek Sculpture, and to provide for older people possessing some superficial knowledge, and desiring to widen it, a convenient companion when examining Galleries of Casts. For the most part, therefore, only such sculptures are included in the work as are found in collections of this kind, or in the British Museum. Book A Handbook of Greek and Roman Sculpture Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Handbook of Greek and Roman Sculpture Classic Reprint written by Edmund Von Mach and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-09 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Greek and Roman Sculpture Part Ten - Portraits - is the least complete part of the collection, especially as regards Roman portraits. This had to be so, because the number of extant Roman por traits is so large that even a fair selection from them would have been out of proportion to the other parts of the book. No attempt, therefore, has been made to give portraits of all men of note. The aim rather has been to select statues and busts which illustrate the develop ment of portrait-sculpture, irrespective of the persons portrayed. In Part Eleven - Heads the specialist may miss some favorite specimens, but here again the material from which to draw is so large that a rigid sifting process became necessary. The principle followed was similar to that adopted for Part Ten. Heads were included in the list when they illustrated the development of sculpture, and often excluded, although with considerable regret, when their chief claim to attention was based on their pleasing appearance. Download or read book Hand Book of Greek and Roman Sculpture Classic Reprint written by D. Cady Eaton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hand-Book of Greek and Roman Sculpture As the Berlin Museum contains casts of all well-known ancient statues the Bausteine starts at the beginnings of Greek sculpture, gradually unfolds the principles that led to its perfect development, and follows it through degen cracy to its end. I have undertaken to translate and edit selections from the Bausteine to meet the taste that is happily beginning to show itself in this country. My book may serve asa catalogue where casts are already collected; it may also serve as a guide to societies interested in forming collections, for in selecting I have sought for the most typical examples. A few descriptions are taken from other sources. Of these the majority relate to works discovered, or investi gated, since the Bausteine was published. It is evident that the descriptions should be read in the presence of the objects, or of good representations of them; casts or photographs, for instance. The ordinary cuts with which books on art are ordinarily illustrated may serve for purposes of recognition, but they are so misleading and hurtful that I do not recommend their use. It is further evident that if the art-student would derive all possible benefit from this work he will study the statues in their chronological order. I' I take great pleasure in thus publicly thanking Mr. Alfred L. Ripley, of the Yale faculty, for his kind, valuable, and indispensable assistance in preparing this edition for the press. It is a happy thing that Greek sculpture is beginning to receive deserved attention in this country; for there is no better assured process for purifying taste than that offered by its study. These statements refer to art under the Romans at the time of the republic. Those relating to it between the point at which I here stop and the fall of Roman freedom will be found in the second part, because they are more intermixed with Greek history. They have this value at least that, if any one should wish to pursue them more at length, they will save him a portion of the labor which is occasioned by reading the ancient authors with so much care and with reference to the succession of events. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Greek Sculpture: From the Earliest Times Down to the Age of Pheidias A narrative of the rise and progress of Greek sculpture involves many questions on which there are now differences of Opinion, and, much as a continuous statement of results would have been preferable, it has at times been necessary to enter into argument. Where the argument is based on less im portant details, I have endeavoured to confine it to foot-notes. But there are also questions on which the opinion commonly received has seemed to me erroneous, and here again some degree of discussion has been unavoidable, the details being as far as possible consigned to smaller type. In a history of Greek sculpture notes and references are indispensable, and may be said to need no apology. What I wish to defend is the extensive use I have made of them, partly, as has just been said, to relieve the narrative, and partly also to show my constant indebtedness to writers who have worked out one or other of the numerous problems of Greek art. It may be said that in devoting the earlier chapters to an explanation of certain main principles in imaginative and in industrial art, with many instances of the earliest condition of handicraft, I have overstepped the limits of a reasonable introduction to the subject of Greek sculpture. But sculpture is an art which even in its highest phases, as well as in its rise and early progress, cannot, I am convinced, be fully appreciated otherwise than by a preliminary study of these questions. Download or read book Greek Sculpture Classic Reprint written by C. C. Edgar and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Sculpture The contents of the present volume of the Catalogue Ge'ne'ml are arranged in a way which requires a word of explanation. For various reasons it was not possible to obtain a complete survey of the whole material before proceeding to catalogue it. Many of the less important objects were stored away in the magazines of the old palace at Ghizeh, where they had an excellent chance of eluding observation. During the last two years again the collection has been in a state of ux new objects have been constantly coming 'in from excavations and acci dental while part of the older material has been from time to time transferred to the Museum of Alexandria. Instead, therefore, of publishing the text in the rather haphazard order in which it was necessarily written I have rearranged it to a certain extent, so that for instance the archaic statuettes and the funerary stelae will be found gathered together in two compact groups instead of being incongruously scattered about. The advantage of this is obvious. The drawback is that the numbers assigned to the objects do not follow each other in the text in their natural order hence it has been necessary to draw up an index (i, p. 75) giving the page on which each number occurs. The existence of this index is the practical point to which I wish to call attention. The photographs from which the plates have been prepared are almost wholly the work of Brugsch Bey. As the objects catalogued vary greatly in size, the illustrations are naturally not on a uniform scale. For practical reasons the arrangement of the plates does not coincide throughout with the order of the text; but that is not a matter that will cause any inconvenience. The statues and stelae that are not illustrated are few and unimportant, being for the most part replicas of well-known types. Book Masterpieces of Greek Sculpture

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masterpieces of Greek Sculpture: A Series of Essays on the History of Art The increasingly rich discoveries of original works on Greek soil have lately somewhat thrown into the shade the study of the copies, for which we are mainly indebted to Italy, not to the advantage of our science. The original sculptures from Greece are, with those rare exceptions to which I have already alluded, works of the second or even inferior rank. The Roman copies, on the other hand, have preserved that pick from the masterpieces of the classical epoch which pleased ancient taste and connoisseurship in the times of highest culture. It is the pick of the best and the most famous that antiquity possessed. Among these copies it is that we must look for the masterpieces mentioned by the authors, for the statues that made epochs or initiated movements. \vere we to possess only copies of the noble creations of a Raphael, a Michelangelo, or a Rembrandt, these would certainly be better worth one's study than the hosts of other originals of the time. Suffice it to say that it is more than doubtful, in the light of our last century of history, whether any race now living, if situated as were the Athenians, subjected to the same temptations and confronted by the same appalling disasters, would acquit themselves as well. And it is perfectly certain that no modern people under like conditions would build a Parthenon. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
