Book A Handbook of Florida Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Handbook of Florida Classic Reprint written by Charles Ledyard Norton and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Florida The first section of the Handbook proper is devoted to sketches of the several counties, with maps compiled from the best attainable authorities. In the context the different railroad lines crossing the counties are given, with tables of stations and distances, so that, if desired, the different routes can be followed from county to county. Take, for instance, Eoute 40, p.183, Jacksonville to Palatka. The railway passes through Duval, Clay, and Putnam Counties. Descriptions of the counties with their respective maps are alphabetically aiTanged, beginning at page 1. On page 25 are stations and distances in Duval County, on page 16 those in Clay County, and on page 82 those in Putnam County, so that the movement of the train can be followed from one map to another throughout the journey. Distances are given in both directions as indicated by arrows at the sides of the tables. The frequent establishment of new stations and the discontinuance of old ones may account for discrepancies between the maps and current time-tables. In future editions these will be corrected as rapidly as jDossible. In the other sections travelling routes are described in general and in detail, with as much accuracy as possible iinder the changing conditions of a country where, a few years ago, railroads were unknown. Book Camp Life in Florida

Download or read book Camp Life in Florida written by Charles Hallock and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Camp Life in Florida: A Handbook for Sportsmen and Settlers This volume is a compilation from the columns of the sportsmen's journal known as the "Forest and Stream." It is, in great part, the outcome of two special commissions sent by the publishers of that paper to explore southern and south-western Florida - one of them to Lake Okeechobee, in the winter of 1873-'74, and the other, in the winter and spring of 1874-'75, to the section laved by the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. To some of its readers it will therefore appear at secondhand; but republication is justified and extenuated by the fact that it has been pressed by repeated solicitations of gentlemen who appreciate the value of the information its chapters contain. So little is known of the Florida Peninsula, and so very meagre are the written accounts of its geography and resources, that the citizens of Florida have, privately and through the press and public meetings, acknowledged to the editor his substantial service rendered to the State. Now, more than ever, is attention being directed to the Land of Flowers. Winter visitors in vast numbers migrate thither as regularly as the birds of passage. But, what was most extraordinary, it possessed a mar vellons fountain, whose waters had the power to renew youth and give vigor to those who bathed in or drank them. Book The Civil War and Reconstruction in Florida Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Civil War and Reconstruction in Florida Classic Reprint written by William Watson Davis and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 804 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Civil War and Reconstruction in Florida Before this monograph on Florida was begun American historians had presented with admirable clearness and breadth the essential facts and principles involved in the momentous issues which confronted the nation for more than a decade after 1861. The field had been fairly explored. Little that was both broadly significant and new remained unexploited. The present work is therefore something like a small section of a long appendix. It belongs logically to that body of monographic literature which usually follows the stimulating analysis of a period or of an extended institution. The crop of Civil War and Reconstruction monographs is steadily increasing and today at least exhibits evidences of good intention and industry on the part of the monographists. Maybe from these detailed studies a wiser and juster interpretation of the period will be produced for some later generation, although nothing, not even monographs, can save a generation from seeking what it desires, which in matters historical seems to be history that is proven ("authentic" is the word usually heard) and interesting ("just like a romance" is the phrase) - regardless of the facts in the case. People seem to want their opinions on past politics ready-made, and there is a successful effort to supply the small demand. This is evidently not a phenomenon of our utilitarian age. Montaigne referred to it more than three centuries ago. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Everglades of Florida Classic Reprint written by J. O. Wright and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Everglades of Florida My first public utterance concerning the Everglades of Florida was an address delivered in Miami, Fla., Feb. 26, 1908. At this meeting I gave it as my opinion the Ever glades would be drained, but the land would not be perma uently settled without the introduction and growth of some staple crop of a high commercial value, and suggested rice and sugar cane as the crops that would most likely be found best suited to the climate and soil. After having completed my investigation for the U. S. Department of Agriculture, in a report prepared by me June 25, 1909, I used the following language: It is believed by agriculturists and chemists who have studied the situation, and from evidence afforded by the demonstrations that have been made, that sugar cane can be grown successfully on these muck lands. The writer saw in numerous places, visited many patches of sugar cane, the stalks as large and heavy as those grown in Louisiana and thick enough on the ground to yield a big tonnage per acre.
