Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of American Pageantry Franklin through philosophy, Edison through his electrical wonders. Expression is power; that is, the sending out of impressions we have received. A thousand feel an impression Where one can properly express it. This ability may be acquired through right teaching and practice and concentration. To this end, the pageant is a training school in which a person may improve himself in conveying his thoughts and feelings through words, tones and action. The pageant on its dramatic side arouses emotion and will, and tends to evolve individual personality. Pageantry is opportunity for self-discovery. It typ ifies in a broad sense the love of life itself, and should stand, as does the American mag azine Life, for the finer old-fashioned sentiment and picturesqueness and shun screech ing modernism. The illustrations are selected from a thousand photographs, each one chosen for a special illustrative purpose or bearing upon the theme. Some of the reproductions are from scenes which do not conform to the definition of a pageant given in this book, but which were commonly and locally known as such. When a pageant was written by one person and staged by another, the name of the former is given because the author usually works for pleasure, the director for money. The writer of this book contemplates issuing a larger, more comprehensive work on pageantry, and would be pleased to communicate with persons having attractive or unusual photographs for sale. Book excerpt: A Washington Post style editor’s fascinating and irresistible look back on the Miss America pageant as it approaches its 100th anniversary. The sash. The tears. The glittering crown. And of course, that soaring song. For all its pomp and kitsch, the Miss America pageant is indelibly written into the American story of the past century. From its giddy origins as a summer’s-end tourist draw in Prohibition-era Atlantic City, it blossomed into a televised extravaganza that drew tens of millions of viewers in its heyday and was once considered the highest honor that a young woman could achieve. For two years, Washington Post reporter and editor Amy Argetsinger visited pageants and interviewed former winners and contestants to unveil the hidden world of this iconic institution. There She Was spotlights how the pageant survived decades of social and cultural change, collided with a women’s liberation movement that sought to abolish it, and redefined itself alongside evolving ideas about feminism. For its superstars—Phyllis George, Vanessa Williams, Gretchen Carlson—and for those who never became household names, Miss America was a platform for women to exercise their ambitions and learn brutal lessons about the culture of fame. Spirited and revelatory, There She Was charts the evolution of the American woman, from the Miss America catapulted into advocacy after she was exposed as a survivor of domestic violence to the one who used her crown to launch a congressional campaign; from a 1930s winner who ran away on the night of her crowning to a present-day rock guitarist carving out her place in this world. Argetsinger dissects the scandals and financial turmoil that have repeatedly threatened to kill the pageant—and highlights the unexpected sisterhood of Miss Americas fighting to keep it alive.

Book excerpt: For this twelfth edition of The American Pageant, we have worked together closely to incorporate the most recent scholarship about American history, and to preserve the readability that has long been the Pageant's hallmark. We are often told that the Pageant is the sole American history text that has a distinctive personality -- defined by clarity, concreteness, a consistent chronological narrative, strong emphasis on major themes, avoidance of clutter, access to a variety of interpretive perspectives, and a colorful writing style leavened, as appropriate, with wit. - Preface.

Book excerpt: Poetry. Asian & Asian American Studies. California Studies. Film. SAVAGE PAGEANT recounts the history of the defunct zoo, Jungleland, which housed Hollywood's show animals up until its closure in 1969. In it, Stark explores the concept of US American spectacle and its historic ties to celebrity culture, the maternal body, racist taxonomies, the mistreatment of animals, and ecological violence. With a hybrid, documentary poetics, SAVAGE PAGEANT reveals how we attempt to narrate and control geographical space and how ghosts (remainders, the sketch, unfinished stories) collapse the tidy corners of our collective, accumulative histories.
