Book Tuberculosis in Animals An African Perspective

Download or read book Tuberculosis in Animals An African Perspective written by Asseged B. Dibaba and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book recounts the biology of M. bovis, followed by the status of bovine Tuberculosis (bTB) in African countries, primarily based on zoonotic and epidemiological field reports. Since the accumulation of data is valueless unless it led to practicable control measures, emphasis is put on locally adapted protocols for future control of the disease. In order to systematically evaluate the knowledge base of bTB, Epidemiologic Problem Oriented Approach (EPOA) methodology was used. The methodology is composed of two triads: i) the problem identification/characterization triad, which is mainly descriptive in nature, and ii) the problem management/solution/mitigation triad, which is mainly geared toward problem management/solution (see figure). The first triad comprises three pillars: i) agent ii) host, and iii) environment and the second one: i) therapeutics/treatment, ii) prevention/control, and iii) health maintenance/promotion. The two triads are linked together by the diagnostic procedure linkage. The systematic and detailed studies of the ‘Host-Agent-Environment’ interactions are the building blocks to the understanding of agent transmission pathways and disease spread. These may include data about the disease status of the country, the nature of the disease agent and its hosts, the modes of transmission, the wildlife reservoirs in nature, persistence of infection, and agent survival in animal products and the environment. The problem identification and characterization triad identifies these interactions. Once a problem has been identified and well understood, the next step is to minimize the risk of transmission and spread of a disease. This area, referred to as problem solution/management triad, consists of problem management alternatives that rely upon prevention/control, and health maintenance/promotion of the disease in livestock, wildlife, and humans with the emphasis on resource-poor, developing countries in Africa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1913 edition. Excerpt: ... APPENDIX Report Of The International Commission On The Control Of Bovine Tuberculosis To the President of the American Veterinary Medical Association: Owing to the great economic and sanitary significance of animal tuberculosis to the live stock industry of America, and the many and varied factors which must of necessity be accounted with in formulating successful measures for its eradication, the American Veterinary Medical Association, at its meeting in Chicago in September, 1909, appointed the International Commission on the Control of Bovine Tuberculosis. The Commission was instructed to study the problem of tuberculosis among cattle and to report at the next meeting of the Association upon reasonable and economically practicable methods or systems to be recommended to both officials and live stock owners for eradicating this great scourge of domesticated animals. It is recognized that tuberculosis is widely prevalent among cattle and other animals and that the frequency with which this great evil occurs is increasing rather than declining. As tuberculosis is one of the strictly preventable infections, there is good ground for the belief that through the formulation and enforcement of proper regulations the disease may eventually be entirely suppressed. The Members were: Dr. J. G. Rutherford, Ottawa, Canada, Chairman; Dr. M. H. Reynolds, St. Paul, Minn., Secretary; Senator W. C. Edwards, Ottawa, Canada; Mr. J. J. Ferguson, Chicago, III.; Mr. J. W. Flavelle, Toronto, Can.; Hon. W. D. Hoard, Fort Atkinson, Wis.; Dr. C. A. Hodgetts, Toronto, Can.; Dr. J. N. Hurty, Indianapolis, Ind.; Dr. J. R. Mohler. Washington, D. C.; Dr. V. A. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cattle Tuberculosis: A Practical Guide to the Agriculturist and Inspector The first edition, which I wrote in conjunction with Dr. Legge, being exhausted, I have been asked by the publishers to bring out a second one. This has prae tically involved re-writing the book, as during the interval so many fresh experiments have been made and so many new regulations introduced by foreign countries, that I have had to omit a good deal which had become anti quated in' my endeavour to bring the book up to date. My object has been to write in such a manner that the subject can be understood by those who have to deal practically with it, yet who, perhaps, have not had the necessary training to appreciate technical phraseology. Tuberculosis is one of the most serious diseases the community have to face, and a general knowledge of its contagious nature, and the methods of combating it, is particularly needful for agriculturists. I hope also that the regulations which I have inserted from foreign coun tries and the various statistical tables may be of use to those who are professionally endeavouring to get rid of this great scourge. In the text I have endeavoured to acknowledge those whose works I have quoted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Tuberculosis in the Workplace

Download or read book Tuberculosis in the Workplace written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-05-15 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before effective treatments were introduced in the 1950s, tuberculosis was a leading cause of death and disability in the United States. Health care workers were at particular risk. Although the occupational risk of tuberculosis has been declining in recent years, this new book from the Institute of Medicine concludes that vigilance in tuberculosis control is still needed in workplaces and communities. Tuberculosis in the Workplace reviews evidence about the effectiveness of control measuresâ€"such as those recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Preventionâ€"intended to prevent transmission of tuberculosis in health care and other workplaces. It discusses whether proposed regulations from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration would likely increase or sustain compliance with effective control measures and would allow adequate flexibility to adapt measures to the degree of risk facing workers.
