Book The American Skyscraper 1850 1940

Download or read book The American Skyscraper 1850 1940 written by Joseph J. Korom and published by Branden Books. This book was released on 2008 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The skyscraper is an American invention that has captured the public's imagination for over a century. The tall building is wholly manmade and borne in the minds of those with both slide rules and computers. This is the story of the skyscraper's rise and the recognition of those individuals who contributed to its development. This volume is unique; its approach, information, and images are fresh and telling. The text examines America's first tall buildings -- the result of twelve years of in-depth research by an accomplished and published architect and architectural historian. Over 300 compelling photographs, charts, and notes make this the ultimate tool of reference for this subject. Biographies woven throughout with period norms, politics and lifestyles help to place featured skyscrapers in context. Quite simply, there is no book like this. The text, carefully and insightfully written, is clear, concise, and easily digestible, the text being the product of well-documented original research written in an informative tone. The American Skyscraper 1850-1940: A Celebration of Height is a richly documented journey of a fascinating topic, and it promises to be a superb addition to libraries, schools of architecture, students of architecture, and lovers of art.

Book Houses of Boston s Back Bay

Download or read book Houses of Boston s Back Bay written by Bainbridge Bunting and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1967 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sociologically speaking, the Back Bay is Boston's fashionable residential quarter -- or so it was until the great depression of 1929 began the gradual conversion of its aristocratic dwellings to more modest uses. Occupying about two hundred acres in the center of the greater filled region, the limits of this smaller area are the river, the Public Garden, Boylston Street, and Fenway Park. The Back Bay is interesting to Bostonian and visitor of the present day for a variety of reasons. Some will look at the area as a remarkably complete example of nineteenth century American architecture. Some people with a sociological interest will study the area's changes in property use and occupancy over the last thirty-five years and try to foresee the role the Back Bay is to play in the future development of the metropolitan center. Still others are concerned with the area as a convenient place to live or with property values and tax rates. With a precision almost unique in American history, the buildings of the Back Bay chart the course of architectural development for more than half a century. - Introduction.

Download or read book Lost Boston written by Jane Holtz Kay and published by Univ of Massachusetts Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At once a fascinating narrative and a visual delight, Lost Boston brings the city's past to life. This updated edition includes a new section illustrating the latest gains and losses in the struggle to preserve Boston 's architectural heritage. With an engaging text and more than 350 seldom-seen photographs and prints, Lost Boston offers a chance to see the city as it once was, revealing architectural gems lost long ago. An eminently readable history of the city's physical development, the book also makes an eloquent appeal for its preservation. Jane Holtz Kay traces the evolution of Boston from the barren, swampy peninsula of colonial times to the booming metropolis of today. In the process, she creates a family album for the city, infusing the text with the flavor and energy that makes Boston distinct. Amid the grand landmarks she finds the telling details of city life: the neon signs, bygone amusement parks, storefronts, and windows plastered with images of campaigning politicians-sights common in their time but even more meaningful in their absence today. Kay also brings to life the people who created Boston-architects like Charles Bulfinch and H. H. Richardson, landscape architect and master park-maker Frederick Law Olmsted, and such colorful political figures as Mayors John "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald and James Michael Curley. The new epilogue brings Boston's story to the end of the twentieth century, showing elements of the city's architecture that were lost in recent years as well as those that were saved and others threatened as the city continues to evolve.

Book The Buildings of Peter Harrison

Download or read book The Buildings of Peter Harrison written by John Fitzhugh Millar and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-10-02 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the most important architect ever to have worked in America, Peter Harrison's renown suffers from the destruction of most of his papers when he died in 1775. He was born in Yorkshire, England in 1716 and trained to be an architect as a teenager. He also became a ship captain, and soon sailed to ports in America, where he began designing some of the most iconic buildings of the continent. In a clandestine operation, he procured the plans for the French Canadian fortress of Louisbourg, enabling Massachusetts Governor William Shirley to capture it in 1745. This setback forced the French to halt their operation to capture all of British America and to give up British territory they had captured in India. As a result, he was rewarded with commissions to design important buildings in Britain and in nearly all British colonies around the world, and he became the first person ever to have designed buildings on six continents. He designed mostly in a neo-Palladian style, and invented a way of building wooden structures so as to look like carved stone--"wooden rustication." He also designed some of America's most valuable furniture, including inventing the coveted "block-front," and introducing the bombe motif. In America, he lived in Newport, Rhode Island, and in New Haven, Connecticut, where he died at the beginning of the War of Independence.
