Book A Habitat Suitability Model for Ruffed Grouse Bonasa Umbellus in New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Region 8

Download or read book A Habitat Suitability Model for Ruffed Grouse Bonasa Umbellus in New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Region 8 written by Austin Groff and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Shrubland, young forest, and other types of early successional habitats have historically declined due to a lack in anthropogenic and natural disturbances. This decline in disturbance-dependent habitats has impacted the populations of a variety of species, with some of conservation concern, such as the Ruffed Grouse (Bonasa umbellus). Using an iteration-reduction method for this project, a Habitat Suitability Model was created in ArcGIS Pro to assess NYSDEC Region 8 for potential habitat, and to assist with determining where the potential habitat was located within the area of interest. These potential habitat areas were ranked from “POOR” to “PRIME” based on literature-derived habitat parameters such as the presence of: 1) significant shrubland habitat, 2) significant urban areas, 3) a significant water source, and 4) significant coniferous forest. The model identified 11,047 potential sites distributed as “PRIME” (3550), “GOOD” (3543), “FAIR” (1462), and “POOR” (2492). eBird data used for verification had 585 eBird sightings that “hit”, or intersected with the model results, with 458 (78%) within “PRIME” sites, 50 (9%) within “GOOD” sites, 46 (8%) within “FAIR” sites, and 31 (5%) within ”POOR” sites. Sensitivity tests based on a maximum literature-derived home range were able to capture an additional 153 eBird sightings of the 467 eBird sightings that missed the model entirely, which increased the model sighting accuracy from 56% (585 eBird sighting hits) to 70% (738 eBird sighting hits). Although several factors associated with the verification data, National Land Cover Database (2011), and model constraints may be reducing the overall accuracy of the model, the results suggest that the model accurately identified “PRIME” habitat, but a majority of this habitat is on private land. Conservation efforts will need to focus on recruiting private landowners into managing shrubland, as well as to continue managing publicly owned lands, as part of the conservation strategy for the Ruffed Grouse."--Abstract.

Book A Habitat Suitability Index Model for Ruffed Grouse on the Cumberland Plateau

Download or read book A Habitat Suitability Index Model for Ruffed Grouse on the Cumberland Plateau written by Melora A. Doan and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two Habitat Suitability index models were created for ruffed grouse (Bonasa umbellus) in the Cumberland Plateau physiographic region of Tennessee. One model evaluated winter habitat and the other evaluated brood habitat. The model for winter habitat used four variables to evaluate habitat suitability, including proximity to evergreen shrub thickets, habitat diversity within home range size, ageclass of the overstory and overstory forest group. The brood habitat model used four variables to evaluate habitat for young broods, including proximity to daylighted roads, habitat diversity within home range, overstory ageclass, and overstory forest group. The models were applied to the currently inventoried portion (approximately 30%) of the Catoosa Wildlife Management Area. These models were used to explore the assumption that there are two major limiting factors for grouse in Tennessee, winter habitat and brood habitat, and to determine the location of the best of these habitats in relation to each other on the Catoosa Wildlife Management Area. Very little of the currently inventoried area had high suitability under either model. On a scale of 0-1.0 where 1.0 is optimal habitat, the winter habitat model classified only 1.06% of the currently inventoried area greater than 0.75 The brood habitat model classified only 0.30% of the inventoried area greater than 0.75 Areas with HSI values above 0.75 for both models were often within home range size, but the scarcity of high quality habitat on Catoosa indicates grouse densities will remain low without increased forest management for their needs.

Download or read book Environmental Impact Research Program Ruffed Grouse Bonasa Umbellus Section 4 1 1 US Army Corps of Engineers Wildlife Resources Management Manual written by John A. Crawford and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wildlife species account for the ruffed grouse (Bonasa umbellus) is provided as Section 4.1.1 of the US Army Corps of Engineers Wildlife Resources Management Manual. The account is developed as a guide to provide the Corps District or project biologist with basic information on the biology, ecological requirements, and management technology for the ruffed grouse. Major topics covered include status, characters and measurements, population attributes, habitat requirements, management, and census and sampling. The importance of the ruffed grouse as a game species is discussed, and the present and historic range of the species is described. Diagnostic characters are presented, including criteria for sex and age determination. The section on population attributes includes details on densities, movements, breeding biology, and mortality factors. Food and cover requirements are treated from a regional perspective, and principal foods are listed by region in tabular form. Techniques for managing ruffed grouse habitat and estimating grouse populations are described, and major sources of information are provided. (Author).

Book Habitat Suitability and Distribution Models

Download or read book Habitat Suitability and Distribution Models written by Antoine Guisan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-14 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the key stages of niche-based habitat suitability model building, evaluation and prediction required for understanding and predicting future patterns of species and biodiversity. Beginning with the main theory behind ecological niches and species distributions, the book proceeds through all major steps of model building, from conceptualization and model training to model evaluation and spatio-temporal predictions. Extensive examples using R support graduate students and researchers in quantifying ecological niches and predicting species distributions with their own data, and help to address key environmental and conservation problems. Reflecting this highly active field of research, the book incorporates the latest developments from informatics and statistics, as well as using data from remote sources such as satellite imagery. A website at www.unil.ch/hsdm contains the codes and supporting material required to run the examples and teach courses.

Book Ruffed Grouse Bonasa Umbellus Habitat Ecology in the Central and Southern Appalachians microform

Download or read book Ruffed Grouse Bonasa Umbellus Habitat Ecology in the Central and Southern Appalachians microform written by Darroch M. (Darroch Michael) Whitaker and published by Ann Arbor, Mich. : University Microfilms International. This book was released on 2003 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ruffed grouse populations are low in Appalachian forests, possibly because low habitat quality negatively affects survival, condition, and reproduction. Through the Appalachian Cooperative Grouse Research Project (ACGRP) researchers tracked>1500 radioed grouse at 10 study sites (1996-2002). To improve our understanding of Appalachian grouse habitat ecology, I carried out two primary analyses of this database. First, grouse should be under selective pressure to minimize movements, so I studied factors associated with variation in home range size. Second, importance of a habitat is affected by an individual's resource needs, and I investigated factors associated with variation in selection of "preferred" habitats. Both approaches yielded important insights into the species' regional habitat ecology. As elsewhere, clearcuts, which afford escape cover, formed the cornerstone of grouse habitat in the region. However, a number of other factors were also important. At the root of this was a divergence in habitat ecology between grouse inhabiting the two major forest types in the region. In oak-hickory forests nutritional constraint strongly influenced habitat use.
