Book Training and Horse Management in India

Download or read book Training and Horse Management in India written by M. Horace Hayes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Training and Horse Management in India: With a Hindustanee Stable Veterinary Vocabulary, and the Calcutta Turf Club Weights for Age and Class On returning to England, after bringing out the previous edition of this work, I found so much new material to add to the chapters on Riding, Bitting, Saddlery, and Wasting, that I thought, instead of unduly enlarging the size of the present volume it would be better to utilise what I had already written as the basis for a systematic treatise on that subject; the result being Riding: on the Flat and Across Country. In the third edition of my Veterinary Notes for Horse Owners, which was published a few months ago, I have given a chapter on Shoeing, which I treated as fully as the scope of the book would allow, and have, accordingly, limited my remarks on this subject, here, to a statement of the general principles of the art and to the special points requiring attention in India. While revising the present edition, I have endeavoured to apply the information I have obtained, during the past five years, in England, and, especially, at Newmarket, for the benefit of owners and trainers in India. I have, also, added a chapter on Teaching Horses to Jump and on Steeplechase Courses; and have rearranged the vocabulary. Book Winged Stallions and Wicked Mares

Download or read book Winged Stallions and Wicked Mares written by Wendy Doniger and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horses are not indigenous to India. They had to be imported, making them expensive and elite animals. How then did Indian villagers—who could not afford horses and often had never even seen a horse—create such wonderful horse stories and brilliant visual images of horses? In Winged Stallions and Wicked Mares, Wendy Doniger, called "the greatest living mythologist," examines the horse’s significance throughout Indian history from the arrival of the Indo-Europeans, followed by the people who became the Mughals (who imported Arabian horses) and the British (who imported thoroughbreds and Walers). Along the way, we encounter the tensions between Hindu stallion and Arab mare traditions, the imposition of European standards on Indian breeds, the reasons why men ride mares to weddings, the motivations for murdering Dalits who ride horses, and the enduring myth of foreign horses who emerge from the ocean to fertilize native mares.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book disentangles complex discourses around humanitarianism to understand the nature of British colonialism in India. It contends that the colonial project of animal protection in late nineteenth-century Bengal mirrored an irony. Emerging notions of public health and debates on cruelty against animals exposed the disjunction between the claims of a benevolent Empire and a powerful imperial reality where the state constantly sought to discipline its subjects-both human and nonhuman. Centered around stories of animals as diseased, eaten, and overworked, the book shows how such contests over appropriate measures for controlling animals became part of wider discussions surrounding environmental ethics, diet, sanitation, and the politics of race and class. The author combines history with archive, arguing that colonial humanitarianism was not only an idiom of rule, but was also translated into Bengali dietetics, anxieties, vegetarianism, and vigilantism, the effect of which can be seen in contemporary politics of animal slaughter in India
