Book The Oil Factor

Download or read book The Oil Factor written by Stephen Leeb and published by Business Plus. This book was released on 2004-02-12 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A storm is coming, a turbulent new era in which oil prices will soar and inflation will sky-rocket. In this important new book, two leading financial strategists show you how to ride out the tempest while still capturing impressive investment returns... It's the oil, stupid. For the last thirty years, the price of oil has been the single most important determinant of the world economy. But now most geologists concur that the planet's supply of cheaply extractable oil, the traditional fuel that powers growth, will shortly be overtaken by demand. In the coming global turbulence, oil prices will top $100 a barrel, helping push inflation well into double digits and even posing a risk of intermittent deflation. The result will be an economy more rocky and a stock market more volatile than ever before. Fortunately, experts Stephen Leeb and Donna Leeb provide a road map that will guide you through the worst of it-and point the way to financial success. With the help of their "all season" Oil Indicator, they'll show you how to choose the right investments for any market environment, guiding you toward portfolios that prize real assets. Among the crucial lessons you'll learn: Why oil and natural gas stocks should be core holdings in every investor's portfolio Why a cautious buy-and-hold strategy is a sure money loser and why conventional "safe" stocks are really the riskiest Why gold may be on the verge of a historic bull run How the global oil wars make defense stocks a premium buy Where to find the surest bets in the burgeoning field of alternative energy How to profit from real estate without actually owning any. With its hands-on advice and savvy stock recommendations, which offer an alternative to staying in pre-inflation-era positions and risking portfolio meltdown, The Oil Factor promises to be the indispensable financial advice guide of the decade.

Book The Rough Guide to the Energy Crisis

Download or read book The Rough Guide to the Energy Crisis written by David Buchan and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-06-21 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate Change is forcing us to re-think our use of fossil fuels - the oil, coal, and gas that we have depended upon for generations. A rising global population means that there is an unprecedented level of demand on the world's energy resources. And there are still desperately poor areas of the world that remain unconnected to a national grid. The Rough Guide to the Energy Crisis examines these important issues, and explains the many challenges facing energy today, and explores possible solutions. KEY TOPICS INCLUDE: -Energy today: We take our energy for granted. But what do we use, and where does it come from? -Peak Oil: How long do we have before oil production peaks? Has it peaked already? -Renewables: Can wind turbines, solar panels, and wave and tidal power really keep the lights on? -Nuclear: How safe are the power plants? And can you be a pro-nuclear green? -Climate Change: Our energy use has environmental consequences. Are their technological answers? And can our lifestyles adapt? Keeping the planet safe while keeping the world moving is perhaps the most important challenge we currently face. The Rough Guide to the Energy Crisis examines the many sides of this problem, and how it could be approached, with erudition and accessibility.

Book excerpt: In Art & Energy, Barry Lord argues that human creativity is deeply linked to the resources available on Earth for our survival. From our ancient mastery of fire through our exploitation of coal, oil, and gas, to the development of today's renewable energy sources, each new source of energy fundamentally transforms our art and culture—how we interact with the world, organize our communities, communicate and conceive of and assign value to art. By analyzing art, artists, and museums across eras and continents, Lord demonstrates how our cultural values and artistic expression are formed by our efforts to access and control the energy sources that make these cultures possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a historical background for the world's current energy problems, describing how the Industrial Revolution has led us to the impending end of the "Age of Fossil Fuels," and describes possible solutions for averting a global crisis. World Energy Crisis: A Reference Handbook provides a thorough investigation of a controversial topic: our current global energy situation, and what actions should be taken to prevent a crippling fuel-supply catastrophe in the future. The book presents a historical background for current energy problems that discusses the supply and consumption of various forms of energy at different periods of history, covering the evolution of energy use in civilization beginning with human muscle power, the successive eras of mechanized industry and transportation, and our current dependence on fossil fuels. The author explains geopolitical factors regarding energy; details controversial new ways of extending the fossil fuel supply, including the exploitation of tar sands and oil shale as well as new technologies like hydraulic fracturing; and examines the various environmental concerns that are integral to extracting energy from natural resources—and the results of consuming them.

Book A Cubic Mile of Oil

Download or read book A Cubic Mile of Oil written by Hewitt Crane and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-06-03 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One cubic mile of oil (CMO) corresponds very closely to the world's current total annual consumption of crude oil. The world's total annual energy consumption - from all energy sources- is currently 3.0 CMO. By the middle of this century the world will need between 6 and 9 CMO of energy per year to provide for its citizens. Adequate energy is needed remove the scourge of poverty and provide food, clothing, and shelter for the people around the world, and more will be needed for measures to mitigate the potential effects of climate change such as building dikes and desalinating water. A Cubic Mile of Oil describes the various energy sources and how we use them, projects their future contributions, and delineates what it would take to develop them to annually produce a CMO from each of them. The requirement for additional energy in the future is so daunting that we will need to use all resources. We also examine how improved efficiency and conservation measures can reduce future demand substantially, and help distinguish approaches that make a significant impact as opposed to merely making us feel good. Use of CMO eliminates a multitude of units like tons of coal, gallons of oil, and cubic feet of gas; obviates the need for mind-numbing multipliers such as billions, trillions, and quadrillions; and replaces them with an easy-to-understand volumetric unit. It evokes a visceral response and allows experts, policy makers and the general public alike to form a mental picture of the magnitude of the challenge we face. In the absence of an appreciation of the scale of the problem, we risk squandering efforts and resources in pursuing options that will not meet tomorrow's global energy needs. We must make critical choices, and a common understandable language is essential for a sustained meaningful dialog.
