Book Knowledge Architectures

Download or read book Knowledge Architectures written by Denise Bedford and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-31 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge Architectures reviews traditional approaches to managing information and explains why they need to adapt to support 21st-century information management and discovery. Exploring the rapidly changing environment in which information is being managed and accessed, the book considers how to use knowledge architectures, the basic structures and designs that underlie all of the parts of an effective information system, to best advantage. Drawing on 40 years of work with a variety of organizations, Bedford explains that failure to understand the structure behind any given system can be the difference between an effective solution and a significant and costly failure. Demonstrating that the information user environment has shifted significantly in the past 20 years, the book explains that end users now expect designs and behaviors that are much closer to the way they think, work, and act. Acknowledging how important it is that those responsible for developing an information or knowledge management system understand knowledge structures, the book goes beyond a traditional library science perspective and uses case studies to help translate the abstract and theoretical to the practical and concrete. Explaining the structures in a simple and intuitive way and providing examples that clearly illustrate the challenges faced by a range of different organizations, Knowledge Architectures is essential reading for those studying and working in library and information science, data science, systems development, database design, and search system architecture and engineering.

Book Managing Research Data

Download or read book Managing Research Data written by Graham Pryor and published by Facet Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-20 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title defines what is required to achieve a culture of effective data management offering advice on the skills required, legal and contractual obligations, strategies and management plans and the data management infrastructure of specialists and services. Data management has become an essential requirement for information professionals over the last decade, particularly for those supporting the higher education research community, as more and more digital information is created and stored. As budgets shrink and funders of research demand evidence of value for money and demonstrable benefits for society, there is increasing pressure to provide plans for the sustainable management of data. Ensuring that important data remains discoverable, accessible and intelligible and is shared as part of a larger web of knowledge will mean that research has a life beyond its initial purpose and can offer real utility to the wider community. This edited collection, bringing together leading figures in the field from the UK and around the world, provides an introduction to all the key data issues facing the HE and information management communities. Each chapter covers a critical element of data management: • Why manage research data? • The lifecycle of data management • Research data policies: principles, requirements and trends • Sustainable research data • Data management plans and planning • Roles and responsibilities – libraries, librarians and data • Research data management: opportunities and challenges for HEIs • The national data centres • Contrasting national research data strategies: Australia and the USA • Emerging infrastructure and services for research data management and curation in the UK and Europe Readership: This is essential reading for librarians and information professionals working in the higher education sector, the research community, policy makers and university managers. It will also be a useful introduction for students taking courses in information management, archivists and national library services.

Book excerpt: This document describes the DoD proposed draft plan that provides an approach to support increased public access to peer reviewed scholarly publications and digitally formatted scientific data arising from unclassified publicly releasable research and programs funded wholly or in part by the DoD, as directed by OSTP Memorandum: "Increasing Access to the Results of Federally Funded Scientific Research," dated 22 February 2013 and the Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition Technology and Logistics (USD(AT&L)) Memorandum: "Public Access to the Results of Department of Defense-Funded Research," dated 9 July 2014. Book Managing State Transportation Research Programs

Download or read book Managing State Transportation Research Programs written by and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently, there are few tools or resources available to state departments of transportation (DOTs) on how to effectively manage state transportation research programs. This synthesis identifies the current state of practice of managing such research programs. It identifies existing resources, desired individual skill sets, core competencies, and structures that are in place for DOTs to manage and conduct transportation research, especially federally funded research. The study presents a literature review and the results of a survey of state DOTs that manage research programs. Forty-four completed responses were received from the 50 agencies in the survey sample, a response rate of 88%. Case examples of five state DOTs are provided; these present an in-depth analysis of the processes and considerations, challenges, lessons learned, and keys to success of research programs.
