But besides this, there is a great deal of light held forth in the word of God, in this matter. I will not argue from Israel's being led by Moses, the lawgiver, out of Egypt, through a land of pits and droughts, and fiery flying serpents, before they were brought into the land of Canaan by Joshua nor from the legal dispensation of the cove nant of grace foregoing the evangelical: nor from John Baptist's being sent as a forerun ner of Christ to prepare the way of the Lord nor from the parable of the prodigal, being in want, and becoming a servant ofa citizen of the country before he returned to his father nor from the dry bones being in a disconsolate condition, before God put life into them. In this case he may be told, 1. That so far as they are injected by Satan, they are not imputed to him. The heart of man is very bad, and from that fountain of sin, exceeding wicked thoughts may arise; but when persons are violently followed with such thoughts, they are usually injected by Satan, they are some of his fiery darts spoken of, Eph. vi. 16. And when he casts them in, the man is no more guilty, than he that hears a man blaspheme: if a man were perfectly holy, that could not prevent such injections if God let Satan loose upon him. . o 2- That his nature is so corrupted, that those injections do less or more taint him.
