Book Diagnostics and Prognostics of Aerospace Engines

Download or read book Diagnostics and Prognostics of Aerospace Engines written by Ravi Rajamani and published by SAE International. This book was released on 2018-11-28 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The propulsion system is arguably the most critical part of the aircraft; it certainly is the single most expensive component of the vehicle. Ensuring that engines operate reliably without major maintenance issues is an important goal for all operators, military or commercial. Engine health management (EHM) is a critical piece of this puzzle and has been a part of the engine maintenance for more than five decades. In fact, systematic condition monitoring was introduced for engines before it was applied to other systems on the aircraft. Diagnostics and Prognostics of Aerospace Engines is a collection of technical papers from the archives of SAE International, which introduces the reader to a brief history of EHM, presents some examples of EHM functions, and outlines important future trends. The goal of engine health maintenance is ultimately to reduce the cost of operations by catching problems before they become major issues, by helping reduce repair times through diagnostics, and by facilitating logistic optimization through prognostic estimates. Diagnostics and Prognostics of Aerospace Engines shows that the essence of these goals has not changed over time.

Book Guide to Engine Lubrication System Monitoring

Download or read book Guide to Engine Lubrication System Monitoring written by E-32 Aerospace Propulsion Systems Health Management and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) provides information and guidance for the selection and use of technologies and methods for lubrication system monitoring of gas turbine aircraft engines. This AIR describes technologies and methods covering oil system performance monitoring, oil debris monitoring, and oil condition monitoring. Both on-aircraft and off-aircraft applications are presented. A higher-level view of lubrication system monitoring as part of an overall engine monitoring system (EMS), is discussed in ARP1587.The scope of this document is limited to those lubrication system monitoring, inspection and analysis methods and devices that can be considered appropriate for health monitoring and routine maintenance. This AIR is intended to be used as a technical guide. It is not intended to be used as a legal document or standard. This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) was developed to provide information and guidance for the selection and use of technologies and methods for lubrication system monitoring of gas turbine aircraft engines. Benefits of effective engine lubrication system monitoring include increased reliability, reduced cost of ownership, improved product assurance, and enhanced safety of the equipment. The guidance within this report will support developers, operators, and maintainers to improve the effectiveness of lubrication system monitoring in existing and future applications. This edition updates content, formatting, and incorporates new content on oil quality monitoring and off-aircraft oil debris monitoring.

Book A Guide to Aircraft Power Train Monitoring

Download or read book A Guide to Aircraft Power Train Monitoring written by E-32 Aerospace Propulsion Systems Health Management and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) is to provide management, designers, and operators with information to assist them to decide what type of power train monitoring they desire. This document is to provide assistance in optimizing system complexity, performance and cost effectiveness. This document covers all power train elements from the point at which aircraft propulsion energy in a turbine or reciprocating engine is converted via a gear train to mechanical energy for propulsion purposes. The document covers aircraft engine driven transmission and gearbox components, their interfaces, drivetrain shafting, drive shaft hanger bearings, and associated rotating accessories, propellers, and rotor systems as shown in Figure 1. For guidance on monitoring additional engine components not addressed, herein (e.g., main shaft bearings and compressor/turbine rotors), refer to ARP1839.This document addresses rotary and fixed wing applications for rotor, turboprop, turbofan, prop fan, and lift fan drive trains on both commercial and military aircraft.Information is provided to assist in: aDefining technology maturity and application risk bCost benefit analysis (Value analysis) cSelection of system components dSelection of technology eManaging interface requirements fDefining information flow requirements The aviation industry uses available and emergent technologies for power train monitoring to affect flight safety, power train and aircraft reliability, availability, maintainability, life cycle cost, and mission effectiveness. This Aerospace Information Report (AIR) provides information and descriptions of common practices based on lessons learned. AIR4174A updates the information contained in the base document.

Book Integrated Vehicle Health Management

Download or read book Integrated Vehicle Health Management written by Ian K Jennions and published by SAE International. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the best seller, Integrated Vehicle Health Management: Perspectives on an Emerging Field, the new title Integrated Vehicle Health Management: The Business Case Theory and Practice takes the subject to the next level. This time it addresses the commercial justification for the adoption of a new modus operandi in asset health management, and its impact on business strategy and servitization of technology. Edited by Dr. Ian Jennions, Director of the IVHM Center at Cranfield University in the U.K., the book tackles the most important questions on the transformation of business from selling a product, and deriving future income from spare part sales, to selling a service in which income is received in return for effective maintenance of the asset. The resulting service business requires a much deeper understanding of how the product is used and should be maintained, thus providing the rationale for Integrated Vehicle Health Management- IVHM. Chapter highlights include: -How to calculate the return on investment of an IVHM system -How real options can be used for decision making -How the availability of prognostic information affects maintenance -The business potential of structural health monitoring in aeronautics Integrated Vehicle Health Management: The Business Case Theory and Practice includes interviews with manufacturers and suppliers on how they are marketing one-of-a-kind services, and opening up new and sustainable revenue streams. Case studies are also introduced to demonstrate the real value of condition-based maintenance, the advantage of cost avoidance and risk mitigation for high-value assets. The objective is to provide the tools and techniques for constructing a business case while also providing some of the context in which these variables are framed. Directed at industry professionals as well as researchers and students, Integrated Vehicle Health Management: The Business Case Theory and Practice fills an important gap in this emerging body of knowledge which unites the technical and the business aspects of a paradigm shift.

Download or read book Airborne Engine Vibration Monitoring EVM System Guidelines for Performance Standard For written by E-32 Aerospace Propulsion Systems Health Management and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) provides guidelines for the functional, performance, qualification and acceptance testing, and documentation requirements for the components of an airborne engine vibration monitoring (EVM) system which is intended for use as a turbojet engine rotor unbalance indicating system, per FAR 25.1305 (D)(3) on transport category airplanes. This AS was raised at the request of the Regulatory authorities to provide a minimum performance standard for airborne vibration monitoring systems. Since its creation, these systems have greatly advanced in technology and application and AIR1839, shortly to be re-issued as ARP1839 now contains much more extensive and up-to-date information concerning such installations. Recent survey of the regulatory authorities by E-32 showed no further interest or usage of AS8054. E-32 therefore voted for its cancellation.
