Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lucy and her grandfather are the focus of this poignant and warm story that teaches that wrinkles are badges of happiness rather than signs of age. Lucy asks Granddad, “Why doesn't your skin fit you? It's all crinkly,” to which he replies, “Those crinkles are called wrinkles,” each of which he got when he smiled especially big. As Lucy traces Granddad's joy-filled face, he describes his memories and shares the cause of each line—his wedding day, Lucy's mother's birth, precious moments from her childhood, and Lucy's birth, among others. Beautiful drawings recreate each thoughtful memory, and the recollections showcase an intimate bond between the two generations.

Book Sunday s Child

Download or read book Sunday s Child written by Serena Katt and published by Random House. This book was released on 2019-05-02 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serena Katt’s grandfather, whom she knew as Opa, was a ‘Sunday’s Child’, one of the lucky ones for whom everything always went right. Opa left a brief account of his childhood and teenage years, but it is opaque, a story of prizes won and boyish adventures. In Sunday’s Child, Serena Katt interrogates Opa’s version of his life. Was it really so innocent? Did he really not know what the Nazis were doing? He joined the Hitler Youth at the age of ten, swearing an oath of loyalty to the Fuhrer. From then on the games he played were actually military training, designed to produce a ‘new German youth ... violent, domineering, unafraid, cruel ... which the world will fear’. At seventeen, in the final desperate days of the war, he is called up but his luck holds. He is sent home and thus survives the war. Sunday’s Child marks the debut of a remarkable graphic novelist. Serena Katt’s book is powerful, eloquent and moving, and her drawing is superb.

Book Daisy Tales and Other Stories of My Grandfather s Younger Days in the South Georgia Piney Woods

Download or read book Daisy Tales and Other Stories of My Grandfather s Younger Days in the South Georgia Piney Woods written by Joseph P. Byrd, IV and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2021-12-27 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daisy Tales and Other Stories of My Grandfather’s Younger Days in the South Georgia Piney Woods By: Joseph P. Byrd, IV Daisy Tales and Other Stories of My Grandfather’s Younger Days in the South Georgia Piney Woods is a book of stories, remembrances and maybe a few tall tales as recounted by the author’s maternal grandfather, William Leroy Edwards. Much of the material, obtained by his father, was transcribed by his mother in the summer of 1955 when his widowed grandfather visited their home. Upon reading his grandfather’s stories, the author was transported back in time to the Georgia frontier and impressed with his sense of humor. Initially, thinking it a project to share with family, the author concluded these stories would appeal to a larger readership who would be interested in memoirs/history/Southern humor in addition to family history.

Book Dad s Best Memories and Recollections

Download or read book Dad s Best Memories and Recollections written by Charles J. Humber and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2016-01-20 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DAD’S BEST MEMORIES AND RECOLLECTIONS is Chazzz Humber’s epithaph casting a very long and sentimental shadow across North America and beyond. This 230-page volume is his granite monument, well-polished! It lavishly records 125 of his best memories over a life-span of nearly eighty years. The vignettes are serenaded with more than 400 illustrations. Those discovering this volume likely will find themselves wanting to record, in their own sunset years, their personal memories and recollections. And when they do, they are apt to recall what it was like to live in their fluctuating world dominated by a variety of personalities and cascading events. Mr. Humber vividly describes what it was like, in 1945, to travel in a 1930 Model A Ford from Toronto to Boston. With lively enthusiasm, he reports what it was like to live in post-World War II Boston, to cook a lobster for a former President of the United States or to sell a pair of elevator shoes to one of Hollywood’s shortest celebrities or to shine the shoes of a Derby-hatted father of a future President of the United States. It is not a remarkable achievement to reflect, to recall or to have memories that are treasured. But to tell them with literary aplomb, to recall the events that happened nearly seventy-five years ago with utmost clarity is definitely an admirable achievement and should be cherished not only by the kin who follow Mr. Humber but by those who might like to imitate what he has monumentally achieved in Dad’s Best Memories and Recollections.

Book Half Way Home from Kinderlou

Download or read book Half Way Home from Kinderlou written by James Edward Alexander and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a collection of short stories, a grandfather describes his happy childhood in the small town of Valdosta, Georgia. It was a simple time when children played simple games with simple toys. Those were the days when failure of a child to say "yes ma'am" and "yes sir" to grown folks was considered an act of disrespect which brought swift rebuke and punishment from the disrespected adult and the child's parents. Most homeowners in his neighborhood only dreamed of indoor plumbing, electric lights and home telephone service. Despite the prevailing social order, dictated by racial segregation which choked the advancement of some of his neighbors, little James Edward was often permitted broader liberties to expand his borders simply because all of the adults encouraged his growth. His timing was right. Colored adults nourished his self confidence as though vicariously rekindling their own aspirations. White adults saw a fast moving innocent youngster with a cautions and keen intellect, so letting him roam was a gift to a child which did not threaten their prerogatives. So adults of both races sought ways to assuage the harshness of segregation for little James Edward by smothering him with affection and special attention. The effects of this esteem is reflected in his pleasant memories of the post depression years and other events of that time.

Book Living Up The Street

Download or read book Living Up The Street written by Gary Soto and published by Laurel Leaf. This book was released on 2012-06-27 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a prose that is so beautiful it is poetry, we see the world of growing up and going somewhere through the dust and heat of Fresno's industrial side and beyond: It is a boy's coming of age in the barrio, parochial school, attending church, public summer school, and trying to fall out of love so he can join in a Little League baseball team. His is a clarity that rings constantly through the warmth and wry reality of these sometimes humorous, sometimes tragic, always human remembrances.
