Book The Apocalypse Letter by Letter

Download or read book The Apocalypse Letter by Letter written by Steven Paul and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-03 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a dying man spends his last years writing a book, people often take notice. When the book claims to reveal the secrets of the Book of Revelation, even more interest is generated. The Apocalypse-Letter by Letter, by Steven Paul, has been described as "a masterpiece." In it, the author pens a series of letters to his brother-in-law to show how the Bible contains all the information a reader would need to decode the symbols, forms and sequence of events in the Apocalypse. Paul's literary genius is as fascinating as the subject is compelling. His unique knowledge of history, the Church, military strategy, literary forms, and wit and humor combine to take the reader on a tour of the Bible's most enigmatic book. After being diagnosed with cancer, the author sent a series of typewritten letters to his brother-in-law. Many of the letters included example passages handwritten in ancient Greek, to show how translators had often distorted the original meaning of the scripture. As Paul lay dying in a hospital bed, he gave instructions to his brother-in-law about how to assemble the information he had written into a book. Alas, he had only transmitted half of it when he passed away. Then handwritten notes were found near his manual typewriter and the brother-in-law spent the next many months entering the entire project into a computer along with the previously received letters.

Book The Second Epistle to the Corinthians

Download or read book The Second Epistle to the Corinthians written by Murray J. Harris and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2013-08-22 with total page 1071 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reputation of the NIGTC series is so outstanding that the appearance of each new volume is noteworthy. This book on 2 Corinthians is no exception. Master New Testament exegete Murray J. Harris has produced a superb commentary that analyzes the Greek text verse by verse against the backdrop of Paul's tumultuous relations with his converts at Corinth. Believing that Scripture cannot be understood theologically unless it has first been understood grammatically, Harris provides a careful, thoroughgoing reading of the text of 2 Corinthians. He gives special attention to matters of translation, making regular references not only to the standard modern English translations but also to influential older versions such as The Twentieth Century New Testament and those by Weymouth, Moffatt, and Goodspeed. His close attention to matters of textual criticism and grammar leads to discussions of the theology of 2 Corinthians that show the relevance of Paul's teaching to Christian living and church ministry. Other notable features of the book include a comprehensive introduction in which all the relevant literary and historical issues are discussed, an expanded paraphrase of the letter that conveniently shows Harris's decisions on exegetical issues and indicates the flow of Paul's argument, a chronology of the relations of Paul, Timothy, and Titus with the Corinthian church, and an excursus on Paul's "affliction in Asia" (1:8-11) and its influence on his outlook and theology.

Download or read book A Cosmic Leap of Faith written by Vincent A. Pizzuto and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the array of christologies embodied within New Testament literature, the so-called "hymn" of Colossians 1: 15-20 offers a unique and invaluable contribution to contemporary theological and inter-religious discourse. This is because it conveys what is arguably the highest christological affirmation within the canon. Pizzuto contends that the hymn is a creative and faith-filled composition by the same deutero-Pauline author of the Colossians epistle itself and demonstrates that there is an inextricable relationship between the chiastic structure of Col 1: 15-20 and a proper understanding of its provenance, authorship and theology. Although the hymn echoes theological motifs consistent with Second Temple Judaism and loosely reflects a number of syncretistic influences, it is fundamentally the novelty of the "Christ-event," - the historical impact of Jesus of Nazareth - that has been most influential in determining the christological categories of Col 1: 15-20 and its larger epistolary framework. Pizzuto thus defends the overall integrity of the hymn against those who would assert that it reflects a pre-Christian or pre-Colossians origin. He concludes that Col 1: 15-20 represents something of a "leap" beyond Pauline christology into a new and unequivocal conviction of the cosmic implications of the Cross.

Each section of the commentary includes: Pericope Bibliography—a helpful resource containing the most important works that pertain to each particular pericope. Translation—the author’s own translation of the biblical text, reflecting the end result of exegesis and attending to Hebrew and Greek idiomatic usage of words, phrases, and tenses, yet in reasonably good English. Notes—the author’s notes to the translation that address any textual variants, grammatical forms, syntactical constructions, basic meanings of words, and problems of translation. Form/Structure/Setting—a discussion of redaction, genre, sources, and tradition as they concern the origin of the pericope, its canonical form, and its relation to the biblical and extra-biblical contexts in order to illuminate the structure and character of the pericope. Comment—verse-by-verse interpretation of the text and dialogue with other interpreters, engaging with current opinion and scholarly research. Explanation—brings together all the results of the discussion in previous sections to expose the meaning and intention of the text at several levels: (1) within the context of the book itself; (2) its meaning in the OT or NT; (3) its place in the entire canon; (4) theological relevance to broader OT or NT issues. General Bibliography—occurring at the end of each volume, this extensive bibliographycontains all sources used anywhere in the commentary.

Download or read book The Book of Hebrews written by William Flewelling and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-08-03 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible studies I chose to do in answer to the request of my first congregation out of seminary sought to present a serious, somewhat-scholarly approach to the interested among my parishioners. In every case, I took a book to study, assuming that it was written to be read from the beginning, and to make sense to the reader in that format. I was most interested in finding what the author or compiler or editor, as the case may be, sought to convey. I have found the studies of value to me personally and professionally and felt that they were generally well received as I led them. Revisiting these studies now finds them again of fresh value to me. I hope they prove to be so for you as well.

Book Towards Ethnic Liberation Theology in Nigeria

Download or read book Towards Ethnic Liberation Theology in Nigeria written by John Arierhi Ottuh and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a Biblical and theological underpinning to the concept of ethnic liberation in Nigeria. It argues that the present economic, political, ethnic and religious structure of Nigeria represents injustice and oppression to those in the so-called “minority groups”. The situation has resulted in division, unrest and mutual suspicion among people of different ethnicities and religions. Bringing together liberation theology, biblical hermeneutical and social studies to foster dialogue between theories and human relations in Nigeria, the book presents an exegesis of Galatians 3:26-29, weaving out a theology of ethnic liberation. As such, it will be useful to theologians, students of religious studies and philosophy, and political historians, as well as the general reader interested in African studies.

Book Letters Pauline and Pastoral

Download or read book Letters Pauline and Pastoral written by William Flewelling and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2017-05-02 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible Studies I chose to do came in answer to the request of my first congregation out of seminary. I consistently sought to present a serious, somewhat scholarly approach to the interested among my parishioners. I would take a book in the bible to study, assume it was written or edited to be read from the beginning and make sense to the reader in that format. I attempted to discover for myself and my group what the book sought to convey. In this volume, the study of Galatians (1981) and 1 Thessalonians (1989) followed that pattern exactly. The Pastoral Epistles (1989) treated the three letters both separately and as an extended effort by their author.
