Book excerpt: Poetry. "You don't need psychedelics or hypnosis. You don't need a shaman or any divine intervention. If it's a trip you're looking for, try Erica Wright's ALL THE BAYOU STORIES END WITH DROWNED. This is a book that warps the America we know into a mesmerizing weirdness. It scintillates the ordinary. Wright's lyricism, the fantastic juxtapositions in her diction and imagery all give us an alternate vision of our national moment. Equal parts surreal, sinister, and sincere, this is a place you definitely want to visit. It might just be the kind of place you need to live in."--Jaswinder Bolina

Book Christina Rossetti s Gothic

Download or read book Christina Rossetti s Gothic written by Serena Trowbridge and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-10-03 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poetry of Christina Rossetti is often described as ‘gothic' and yet this term has rarely been examined in the specific case of Rossetti's work. Based on new readings of the full range of her writings, from ‘Goblin Market' to the devotional poems and prose works, this book explores Rossetti's use of Gothic forms and images to consider her as a Gothic writer. Christina Rossetti's Gothic analyses the poet's use of the grotesque and the spectral and the Christian roots and Pre-Raphaelite influences of Rossetti's deployment of Gothic tropes.

Book The Gothic Forms of Victorian Poetry

Download or read book The Gothic Forms of Victorian Poetry written by Olivia Loksing Moy and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-30 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lonely damsel imprisoned within a castle or convent cell. The eavesdropping of a prisoner next door. The framed image of a woman with a sinister past. These familiar tropes from 1790s novels and tales exploded onto the English literary scene in 'low-brow' titles of Gothic romance. Surprisingly, however, they also re-emerged as features of major Victorian poems from the 1830s to 1870s. Such signature tropes - inquisitional overhearing; female confinement and the damsel in distress; supernatural switches between living and dead bodies - were transfigured into poetic forms that we recognise and teach today as canonically Victorian. The Gothic Forms of Victorian Poetry identifies a poetics of Gothic enclosure constitutive of high Victorian poetry that came to define key nineteenth-century poetic forms, from the dramatic monologue, to women's sonnet sequences and metasonnets, to Pre-Raphaelite picture poems.

Book excerpt: Poetry. Winner of the 2019 Richard Snyder Memorial Publication Prize. "The poems in MIDWEST GOTHIC make the daily deliciously strange--'the daily / which isn't still at all but a whirring / gone deep.' They make us work our way inside them, but once I entered this book, I didn't want to leave. I wanted to stay in 'the copper-tipped town;' I wanted to stay with the delphinium, 'a choir of indigo, ' and 'cornfields made surreal / in the dark.' These difficult times have tested my faith in many things, including language, and MIDWEST GOTHIC arrived just in time to remind me what poems can do."--Maggie Smith

Book The Longman Anthology of Gothic Verse

Download or read book The Longman Anthology of Gothic Verse written by Caroline Franklin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first modern anthology of Gothic verse. It traces the rise of Gothic in the late eighteenth century and follows its footsteps through the nineteenth century. Gothic has never truly died as it constantly reinvents itself, and this lively, illustrated and annotated anthology offers students the atmospheric poetry that originally studded terror novels and inspired horror films. Alongside canonical verse by Coleridge, Keats and Poe, it introduces readers to lesser-known authors' excursions into the macabre and the grotesque. A wide range of poetic forms is included: as well as ballads, tales, lyrics, meditative odes and dramatic monologues, a medievalist romance by Scott and Gothic drama by Byron are also included in full. --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a landscape at once the brutal American South as it is the brutal mind, Boy with Thorn interrogates the genesis of all poetic creation—the imagination itself, questioning what role it plays in both our fascinations with and repulsion from a national history of racial and sexual violence. The personal and political crash into one language here, gothic as it is supple, meditating on visual art and myth, to desire, the practice of lynching and Hurricane Katrina. Always at its center, though, is the poet himself—confessing a double song of pleasure and inevitable pain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Within these twenty-three poems the Poet Laureate brings out visions and infinite spheres, nightmares, and multiple dimensions; all unique in the chronicles of eldritch fusion, or poetic prose, stygian dark sonnets, to include hyperborean poetic mythos and tales. This selected group of poems, is by far an ominous collection: some close to macabre, some fantasy, all vintage, all brilliantly conceived, and executed in a free style lore, for the 21st Century reader, specifically. Its long verse is toned with heightened eeriness. The dark sonnets, all with ardent themes and philosophies (metaphors, symbols, and figures of speech, etcetera). There is no imitativeness in the poet's work, it is all original in concept and performance. Much of this poetry has been taken out of the mothball cabinet and reedited for publication, -once set aside for another era; now hesitantly brought out at this early date by petition. It explores strange and wonderful and seldom engraved frontiers. The Poet presents to the reader a contact with the cosmos, full of mystery, and the beauty of God's handiwork. He ventures into physics, demonology, anthropology, astrology, eschatology (Armageddon) and psychology. He takes you near the primordial nocturnal black holes, gravitational waves as if you were a hypothetical observer."

Book excerpt: Original working manuscript of Swinburne's poem "The garden of Proserpine". Bound with the manuscript pages are a printed version of the poem from an unknown published edition (pages numbered 189-192). Formerly owned by the book collector and literary forger Harry Buxton Forman. A note from Forman is written on a blank leaf preceding the manuscript: The Garden of Proserpine, perhaps the loveliest lyric poem Swinburne ever wrote, was set up from this autograph manuscript when the poem took its place in the renowned volume known as Poems and Ballads, issued in the Autumn of 1866, immediately withdrawn under pressure by Mr. Moxon, and speedily re-issued by John Camden Hotten. The calligraphy is more characteristic than excellent. The cancellings and changes, however, are of considerable interest.

  • Pages : 209 pages

Download or read book Monument written by Natasha D. Trethewey and published by Ecco. This book was released on 2018 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longlisted for the 2018 National Book Award for Poetry " Trethewey's poems] dig beneath the surface of history--personal or communal, from childhood or from a century ago--to explore the human struggles that we all face." --James H. Billington, 13th Librarian of Congress Layering joy and urgent defiance--against physical and cultural erasure, against white supremacy whether intangible or graven in stone--Trethewey's work gives pedestal and witness to unsung icons. Monument, Trethewey's first retrospective, draws together verse that delineates the stories of working class African American women, a mixed-race prostitute, one of the first black Civil War regiments, mestizo and mulatto figures in Casta paintings, Gulf coast victims of Katrina. Through the collection, inlaid and inextricable, winds the poet's own family history of trauma and loss, resilience and love. In this setting, each section, each poem drawn from an "opus of classics both elegant and necessary,"* weaves and interlocks with those that come before and those that follow. As a whole, Monument casts new light on the trauma of our national wounds, our shared history. This is a poet's remarkable labor to source evidence, persistence, and strength from the past in order to change the very foundation of the vocabulary we use to speak about race, gender, and our collective future. *Academy of American Poets' chancellor Marilyn Nelson
