Book excerpt: “A vivid ride through eighteenth century Europe with darkness and dread creeping at its corners. Utterly enchanting.” - Emily A. Duncan, New York Times bestselling author of Wicked Saints "Cohoe transmutes the legend of the Philosopher's Stone into a dark, intoxicating tale of ambition, obsession, and sacrifice. Prepare for a magic that will consume you." - Rosamund Hodge, New York Times bestselling author of Cruel Beauty and Bright Smoke, Cold Fire In her debut novel A Golden Fury, Samantha Cohoe weaves a story of magic and danger, where the curse of the Philosopher’s Stone will haunt you long after the final page. Thea Hope longs to be an alchemist out of the shadow of her famous mother. The two of them are close to creating the legendary Philosopher’s Stone—whose properties include immortality and can turn any metal into gold—but just when the promise of the Stone’s riches is in their grasp, Thea’s mother destroys the Stone in a sudden fit of violent madness. While combing through her mother’s notes, Thea learns that there’s a curse on the Stone that causes anyone who tries to make it to lose their sanity. With the threat of a revolution looming, Thea is sent to live with the father who doesn’t know she exists. But there are alchemists after the Stone who don’t believe Thea’s warning about the curse—instead, they’ll stop at nothing to steal Thea’s knowledge of how to create the Stone. But Thea can only run for so long, and soon she will have to choose: create the Stone and sacrifice her sanity, or let the people she loves die.

Book Evaluating Empire and Confronting Colonialism in Eighteenth Century Britain

Download or read book Evaluating Empire and Confronting Colonialism in Eighteenth Century Britain written by Jack P. Greene and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-29 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprehensively examines how metropolitan Britons spoke and wrote about the British Empire during the short eighteenth century, from about 1730 to 1790. The work argues that following several decades of largely uncritical celebration of the empire as a vibrant commercial entity that had made Britain prosperous and powerful, a growing familiarity with the character of overseas territories and their inhabitants during and after the Seven Years' War produced a substantial critique of empire. This critique evolved out of a widespread revulsion against the behaviours exhibited by Britons overseas and built on a language of 'otherness' that metropolitans had used since the beginning of overseas expansion to describe its participants, the societies and polities that Britons abroad constructed in their new habitats. It used the languages of humanity and justice as standards to evaluate and condemn the behaviours of both overseas Britons and subaltern people in the British Empire, whether in India, the Americas, Africa or Ireland.

Book excerpt: Christian has a touch decision to make; does he go for the mysterious girl that teases and eludes him, or for the bubbly blonde who’s near perfect in his eyes? Looking past their unique personalities and their incredible sex appeal that is so difficult for him to resist, his decision bears heavy burden because the girls in question are really a Valkyrie and a Harpy. The two races have been warring with each other for many millennia and Christian’s final choice will decide one of their fates for good. As if a love triangle with devastating consequences wasn’t enough, Christian also has to make a good impression his freshman year of college if he wants to have any chance of playing football next fall. While behaving like a good boy and dealing with two fantastical girls, he also has to come to terms with who his father is and, more importantly, what his father is. Mayhem, an immortal that previously held the title as The God of War, offers to help Christian on his journey to answer all of his questions. Mayhem’s help proves to be detrimental rather than beneficial and forces Christian to take matters into his own hands. It’s time for him to grow up and make up his mind; time is short.
