This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Glossary of Words Used in the County of Chester It has been rather difficult to know to what extent the local pronunciation of ordinary English words should be admitted. Manifestly to admit every slight variety of pronunciation would be to extend the Glossary almost indefinitely. And yet pronunciation is by no means unimportant, and should not be entirely ignored. There was no fixed rule possible, so I have used my judgment in these cases, by admitting words of which the pronunciation seemed to me to be sufficiently removed from the accepted pronunciation, omitting those in which the difference was slight. In an introductory chapter I propose to revert to the subject of pronunciation, and give the rules by which it appears to be governed. With respect to the spelling of words, I have endeavoured, as far as possible, to represent the pronunciation phonetically; but as I have never mastered the glossic system of sounds, I have been obliged to give the words according to the usual recognized rules of English spelling, but I do not think there will be any difficulty in understanding my meaning. Where a word has the same pronuncia tion as in classical English, I have spelt it as it is usually spelt, whether the usual spelling is phonetic or not. Book Glossary of Dialect Archaic Words

Download or read book Glossary of Dialect Archaic Words written by J. Drummond Robertson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glossary of Dialect Archaic Words: Used in the County of Gloucester The following Glossary is the outcome of an eight years' residence in Gloucester, during which my business brought me into contact with all sorts and conditions of people from the various parts of the county, but principally with those who spoke the dialect of the vales of Gloucester and Berkeley, the Forest of Dean, and the North Western district. A great deal of fresh matter has been collected, which has not appeared in any previous glossaries or word-lists; but at the same time I have been greatly indebted to the labours of others who have worked before me in the same field. First and foremost amongst such publications I must mention "A Glossary of the Cotswold Dialect," by the Rev. R.W. Huntley, published in 1868. All those words in it which were not known to me, or which I could not verify, have been given on the authors authority, and are marked "Huntley." The next in importance of Gloucestershire Glossaries is contained in "Collecteana Gloucestriensia," by John Delafield Phelps, Esq., of Chavenage House, Dursley, published in 1842. Words given on his authority only are marked "Phelps." I have also excerpted the Gloucester words in Halliwell's and Grose's Dictionaries, and these are similarly marked "Halliwell" and "Grose" respectively, when they could not otherwise be corroborated. Book A Glossary of the Words and Phrases of Cumberland Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Glossary of the Words and Phrases of Cumberland Classic Reprint written by William Dickinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Glossary of the Words and Phrases of Cumberland The English language has no equivalent to the vowel sound in the way the word brust (burst) is pronounced. It is not the u, the 3, nor the i, but a kind of compromise between the e and the i. The word run is in a similar predicament, it being frequently pronounced in a half-way sound between win and ran, and partly approaching to ren, but not strictly coinciding with the sound of any of them. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Glossary of Words and Phrases Pertaining to the Dialect of Cumberland The present work is a second edition, revised and extended, of 1 Glossary of the Words and Phrases of Cumberland, published in White haven, in 1859, which has for some time been out of print. The changes in this new edition are numerous, both in the way of omission and addition. As regards the omissions, many words previously included Were merely corruptions or peculiar pronunciations of ordinary current English. These it has not been deemed necessary to retain. The rule of exclusion, however, has not been absolutely or rigorously observed, because some Cumbrian forms of common English cannot without ex planation be made intelligible to people living beyond the borders of the county. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Glossary of Words: Used in South-East Worcestershire This attempt to compile a Glossary of Words and Phrases used in South-East Worcestershire (the district around Evesham and Pershore), owes its origin, principally, to a perusal of Mrs. Chamberlains interesting 'Glossary of West Worcestershire Words, ' published by the English Dialect Society in 1882. Being a native of the district above indicated, and an enthusiastic lover of everything relating to the county of Worcester, I had for some years previously, been collecting scraps and fragments concerning the locality, but with no definite object in view; and I felt greatly delighted when I recognised in Mrs. Chamberlain's work, many of the old home words, sayings, and customs, which were so familiar to me in my younger days; but which had in many instances become almost forgotten. Although in the same county, I found that there were many words used in our locality which were not in use in West Worcestershire, and so not included in Mrs. Chamberlain's book. I therefore began systematically to note down all such words that I could think of, or that I otherwise met with; with the result that I am now able to submit to all who are interested in the subject of local dialects, and to the public generally, the present collection of South-East Worcestershire Words and Phrases. In doing so, I trust that I am contributing a minute quota of quaint (and possibly some few peculiar) words, towards the formation of a work which would be of the greatest interest and utility, viz., a complete Glossary of Local Words, Sayings, and Phrases used in every district in England. Book Glossary of Provincial and Local Words Used in England Classic Reprint

Download or read book Glossary of Provincial and Local Words Used in England Classic Reprint written by Francis Grose and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glossary of Provincial and Local Words Used in England Provincial or Local Words are of three kinds, the first, either Saxon or Danish, in general grown obsolete from dis use, and the introduction of more fashionable terms; and, consequently, only retained in countries remote from the ca pital, where modern refinements do not easily find their way, and are not readily adopted. The second sort are words derived from some foreign lan guage, as Latin, French, or German; but so corrupted, by passing through the mouths of illiterate clowns, as to render their origin scarcely discoverable; corruptions of this kind being obstinately maintained by country people, who, like the old Monks, will never exchange their old mumpsimus for the new sumpsimus. The third are mere arbitrary words, not deducible from any primary source of language, but ludicrous nominations.
