Download or read book The Practical Geologist written by Garret Romaine and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-10-15 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geology is destiny—understand it and life gets easier. Our ancestors grasped enough about their environment to fashion tools, start fires, erect shelters, and find water. The principles they discovered long ago still apply, and the science behind stronger concrete, usable marble, and more pure metals still stands. The ancients were the first rockhounds out of necessity, and the skills they perfected resonate from medicine to sanitation, from pottery to food preservation. The Practical Geologist traces the impact of geology on the first toolmakers in their trek toward civilization and details how understanding geology allowed for advances in agriculture, construction, weaponry, and the arts. The hacks, shortcuts, and rules described here are still vital for not just homesteaders, campers, hikers, and survivalists—the same geological factors assist us all as we struggle with ever-changing global conditions and reach for the stars. Using full-color pictures, tables, diagrams, and simple language, The Practical Geologist covers the basics of geology and applies them directly to everyday situations, serving as a practical guide to co-existing in the physical world.

Download or read book The Third Level of Reality written by Percy Seymour and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2003-03-01 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Third Level of Reality is a reprint of a book by Percy Seymour originally titled The Paranormal: Beyond Sensory Science. This edition features a new foreword by Colin Wilson. TOTAL REALITY CONSISTS OF THREE LEVELS. The first level of reality is the reality of the five senses. The second level of reality is that which results from the response of humans and animals to magnetic fields. This response can not only be used to find direction, time, and location in space, but it also allows us to understand some of the links between human personality and the state of the cosmos at the birth of each individual. The third level of reality requires a reformulation of our concepts of space and time. The main concept at the basis of this level is that some pairs of points in space, anchored on two types of subatomic particle, are linked by two different levels of space, only one of which is accessible to our five normal senses and scientific instruments. This other space-let's call it extrasensory space-is not limited by the speed of light. Here particles and events are instantaneously linked to those particles and events with which they last interacted. This approach to space and time makes it possible to understand a wide variety of phenomena relating to subatomic physics and to phenomena that we currently classify as paranormal, including the human aura, apparitions, telepathy, clairvoyance, and our ability to look into the future.
Download or read book Mineralogy and Geochemistry of Gems written by Panagiotis Voudouris and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-03-10 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gems have been used in the manufacture of jewellery and as ornaments since antiquity. Considering gems, recent statistics have shown that about 15 billion Euros are annually at stake. Nowadays, gemmology, i.e., the study of gem materials, is one of the most expanding fields in the earth sciences, positioned between academia and industry. As an applied science, in gemmology, the instruments used should be non- or microdestructive, and their cost should be reasonable both in terms of equipment and time consumption. Gemmology can also be used contribute to the development of pure science and in some cases, destructive techniques may have to be used. Taking into account the fact that gems are albeit rarely available for scientific research, this compilation of 20 articles by around 100 researchers from over 30 different institutions situated in 20 countries from around the globe, presented in the Special Issue entitled “Mineralogy and Geochemistry of Gems”, offers very good examples on the application of various methods for their study which will hopefully contribute to our better understanding of gem formation in general and will enhance scientific debates attracting more scientists from various disciplines to get involved in this field.

Download or read book Muse Cells written by Mari Dezawa and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-27 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first comprehensive account of multilineage-differentiating stress-enduring (Muse) cells, a pluripotent and non-tumorigenic subpopulation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) that have the ability to detect damage signals, migrate to damaged sites, and spontaneously differentiate into cells compatible with the affected tissue, thereby enabling repair of all tissue types. The coverage encompasses everything from the basic properties of Muse cells to their tissue repair effects and potential clinical applications—for example, in acute myocardial infarction, stroke, skin injuries and ulcers, renal failure, and liver disease. An important technical chapter provides a practical and precise protocol for the isolation of Muse cells, which will enable readers to use Muse cells in their own research. In offering fascinating insights into the strategic organization of the body’s reparative function and explaining how full utilization of Muse cells may significantly enhance the effectiveness of MSC treatment, the book will be of high value for Ph.D. students, postdocs, basic researchers, clinical doctors, and industrial developers.
