Book A Geography of the Canadian Economy

Download or read book A Geography of the Canadian Economy written by Iain Wallace and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2002 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The geography of the Canadian economy is undergoing significant change. North-south links encouraged by the North American Free Trade Agreement are loosening east-west ties forged since Confederation. Metropolitian economies have replaced resource-based hinterlands as the centres of dynamic growth, and as the regional economies of traditional geographical units, such as the Praries, have become less homogeneous, policy choices have become more complex. In A Geography of the Canadian Economy, Wallace offers a detailed account of how geography has simultaneously shaped the evolution of Canada's economy and has been shaped by economic forces. It explores these themes along three dimensions. Part I, Context, reviews Canada's external economic relations, globally and particularly within North America. Probing the implications of culture, politics, and regionalism for Canada's economic geography, it assesses the roles played by the natural environment, structural change in industrial systems, and the character of cities in shaping domestic economic opportunities and challenges. Part II, Sectors, presents an overview of Canada's major economic sectors, from the traditional, resource-based ones such as agriculture, forest products, and energy to those built on contemporary expertise in high-technology manufacturing and services. Part III, Regions, explores the distinctive core/periphery economic structure of four major regions: Atlantic Canada, Central Canada, WesternCanada, and Northern and Aboriginal Canada. A final chapter takes stock of the forces of continuity and change that make the geography of the Canadian economy a fascinating 'work in progress'.

Book Canada and the Global Economy

Download or read book Canada and the Global Economy written by John N.H. Britton and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1996-05-01 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors explore four central themes: the locational impacts of the openness of the Canadian economy, Canada's relatively simple economic geography in terms of regional variations in resources and urban development, the problems of keeping pace with rapid advances in technology, and the role of government in maintaining a national market and assisting economic development. They outline the essential elements of Canada's contemporary economic geography, highlight the origins and spatial imprint of change in the Canadian economy, and provide an assessment of Canada's participation in significant international patterns of economic change. Canada and the Global Economy is concerned not only with the economic size and location of consumption and production but also with institutional changes and shifts in employment, the sectoral composition of economic activity, and the organizational structure and locational behaviour of particular industries and firms. Special attention is given to the technological development of both established industries and new service and manufacturing activities. A timely addition to the field, it provides a geographic perspective on significant changes in jobs and types of work that result from the transformation of economic activities. Book The Periphery in the Knowledge Economy

Download or read book The Periphery in the Knowledge Economy written by Mario Polèse and published by Institut national de la recherche scientifique/INRS-Urbanisation, culture et société. This book was released on 2002 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Since the early 1980's most peripheral regions of Eastern Canada have seen their population and employment levels stagnate, then decline. However, these trends - ilustrated by the first results of the 2001 census - are characterised by strong discontinuities (mine closures, collapse of fish stock), but also by counter-trends (dynamic entrepreneurship, success in some regions). In this book the authors examine the economy and geographic processes which underlie these trends, and address the following questions: are these processes specific to Eastern Canada, or are they more general? Are all peripheral regions on an equal footing with respect to the trends towards metropolisation and increasing international trade? Are there any policy approaches which may counter-act some of the effects of these structural trends?"--P. 4 of cover.

Book Regional Geography of the United States and Canada

Download or read book Regional Geography of the United States and Canada written by Daniel R. Montello and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2021-03-29 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifth and thoroughly revised edition of Regional Geography of the United States and Canada provides a rich and comprehensive overview of both the physical and human geography of these two countries, and in the true spirit of geography, the interactions and interrelations of the physical and human. Following long traditions of the discipline of geography, this text incorporates words, maps, drawings, photographs, and numerical data to present its information in an engaging way. After covering beneficial precursor topics—such as the basics of physical and human geography—the text explores fifteen regions of the US and Canada. The authors observe and describe our planet’s geography in thorough and accessible detail, while laying out the spatial basics of the location, shape, and size of the different regions, and summarizes their most distinctive thematic qualities. Physical topics covered include the region’s topography and landforms, soils, climate, hydrography, vegetation, and wildlife. The human topics include the region’s population; the ethnicities and settlement history of its people; economic activities, including agriculture, forestry, mining, fishing, manufacturing, and service industries; cities; and transportation. In-depth essays expand on specific topics of interest and importance, while outlook sections prognosticate about the near future of the regions. Each chapter concludes with a bibliography of books, articles, and reports that provide further sources for the interested reader.

While physical and historical geography have traditionally played a central role in the study of Canadian geography, this study gives more weight to the coverage of contemporary economic and social factors which have transformed the spatial fabric of Canada's landscape. The most powerful global event affecting Canada and its regions has been the liberalization of world of world trade.

Download or read book The Geography of the Canadian North written by Robert M. Bone and published by Don Mills, Ont. : Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text looks at the dual relationship of the Canadian north as both resource frontier and homeland of many Aboriginal groups. Since the last edition of this text, many changes have occurred, raising the possibility that both the frontier and homeland concepts can become a northern reality. These concepts are coherently presented throughout the book and brought to the fore in the concluding chapter.
