Download or read book SOUTH ASIA COUNTRY ANALYSES written by Barış Adıbelli and published by GASAM - Güney Asya Stratejik Araştırmalar Merkezi & South Asia Strategic Research Center. This book was released on 2022-12-15 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Asia Strategic Research Center (GASAM) was founded in 2004 to provide accurate and objective information about the historical, political, economic, and sociocultural structures of the South Asian region, composed of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, as well as about strategic and geopolitical dynamics of the region. GASAM aims to inform the Turkish public about South Asian countries and, in return, inform the South Asian public about Türkiye. It also aims to procure mutual benefits for them in the historical, economic, academic, and sociocultural domains, and this way to contribute to regional and global peace. “South Asia Country Analyses” provides an overview of the region to improve the understanding of South Asian countries in Türkiye. This study aims to become a source of fundamental information about South Asia that will hopefully contribute to improving bilateral relations between Türkiye and the region’s countries. It also seeks to explore South Asia’s geographical, historical, political, and economic potential and raise general awareness regarding the significance of this region. he study is divided into two parts. The initial section is an introductory chapter discussing the general characteristics of South Asia. The second part provides separate analyses of eight South Asian countries. A different author wrote each chapter in this work. The book is prepared in two languages, Turkish and English, and the texts deliberately avoid complex academic jargon, offering analyses instead in a direct and succinct style. One of the most significant attributes of this book is that it is an objective and collective work. It is also a pioneering study in that there is no such study with this scope either in Türkiye or in the region’s countries. From this perspective, it is hoped that readers in Türkiye and South Asian countries will find this book, sponsored by GASAM, an invaluable compendium of fundamental information about South Asia. We would like to convey our gratitude to every person and institution who supported the realization of our project. We hope that this work will contribute to the social, political, scientific, cultural, and economic activities between Türkiye and South Asian countries. Cemal Demir GASAM President

Book Orientalism

  • Author : Edward W. Said
  • Publisher : Vintage
  • Release : 2014-10-01
  • ISBN : 0804153868
  • Pages : 432 pages

Download or read book Orientalism written by Edward W. Said and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than three decades after its first publication, Edward Said's groundbreaking critique of the West's historical, cultural, and political perceptions of the East has become a modern classic. In this wide-ranging, intellectually vigorous study, Said traces the origins of "orientalism" to the centuries-long period during which Europe dominated the Middle and Near East and, from its position of power, defined "the orient" simply as "other than" the occident. This entrenched view continues to dominate western ideas and, because it does not allow the East to represent itself, prevents true understanding. Essential, and still eye-opening, Orientalism remains one of the most important books written about our divided world.

Book Thinking Design

  • Publisher : SAGE Publications
  • Release : 2011-01-06
  • ISBN : 8132103149
  • Pages : 285 pages

Download or read book Thinking Design written by S Balaram and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2011-01-06 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thinking Design looks at ‘design’ in its broadest sense and shows how design originates in ‘human need’ which is not only physical but also psychological, socio-cultural, ecological and spiritual. The book calls for broad-based, socially integrated designs with a large global vision that offer creative solutions to a variety of subjects rather than providing multiplicity of objects. Exploring the course taken by design during the time of Gandhi and in the following era, the author advocates the need for service - or process-oriented designs in contrast to product-oriented designs. A remarkable feature of the book is the way its narrative is enlivened with case studies detailing design inventions, interspersed with tales of Mullah Nasiruddin that provide a tongue-in-cheek take on aspects of design.

Book A Concise History of Modern India

Download or read book A Concise History of Modern India written by Barbara D. Metcalf and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-09-28 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a second edition of their successful Concise History of Modern India, Barbara Metcalf and Thomas Metcalf explore India's modern history afresh and update the events of the last decade. These include the takeover of Congress from the seemingly entrenched Hindu nationalist party in 2004, India's huge advances in technology and the country's new role as a major player in world affairs. From the days of the Mughals, through the British Empire, and into Independence, the country has been transformed by its institutional structures. It is these institutions which have helped bring about the social, cultural and economic changes that have taken place over the last half century and paved the way for the modern success story. Despite these advances, poverty, social inequality and religious division still fester. In response to these dilemmas, the book grapples with questions of caste and religious identity, and the nature of the Indian nation.

Book Political Aesthetics of Global Protest

Download or read book Political Aesthetics of Global Protest written by Pnina Werbner and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-30 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Egypt to India, and from Botswana to London, worker, youth and middle class rebellions have taken on the political and bureaucratic status quo. When most people can no longer earn a decent wage, they pit themselves against the privilege of small, wealthy and often corrupt elites. A remarkable feature of the protests from the Arab Spring onwards has been the salience of images, songs, videos, humour, satire and dramatic performances. This collection explores the central role the aesthetic played in energising the massive mobilisations of young people, the disaffected, the middle classes and the apolitical silent majority. Discover how it fuelled solidarities and alliances among democrats, workers, trade unions, civil rights activists and opposition parties.

Book Afghanistan s Islam

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nile Green
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2017
  • ISBN : 0520294130
  • Pages : 354 pages

Download or read book Afghanistan s Islam written by Nile Green and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book provides the first ever overview of the history and development of Islam in Afghanistan. It covers every era from the conversion of Afghanistan through the medieval and early modern periods to the present day. Based on primary sources in Arabic, Persian, Pashto, Urdu and Uzbek, its depth and scope of coverage is unrivalled by any existing publication on Afghanistan. As well as state-sponsored religion, the chapters cover such issues as the rise of Sufism, Sharia, women's religiosity, transnational Islamism and the Taliban. Islam has been one of the most influential social and political forces in Afghan history. Providing idioms and organizations for both anti-state and anti-foreign mobilization, Islam has proven to be a vital socio-political resource in modern Afghanistan. Even as it has been deployed as the national cement of a multi-ethnic 'Emirate' and then 'Islamic Republic,' Islam has been no less a destabilizing force in dividing Afghan society. Yet despite the universal scholarly recognition of the centrality of Islam to Afghan history, its developmental trajectories have received relatively little sustained attention outside monographs and essays devoted to particular moments or movements. To help develop a more comprehensive, comparative and developmental picture of Afghanistan's Islam from the eighth century to the present, this edited volume brings together specialists on different periods, regions and languages. Each chapter forms a case study 'snapshot' of the Islamic beliefs, practices, institutions and authorities of a particular time and place in Afghanistan"--Provided by publishe
