Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Hennell, born about 1785 the son of a Coventry ribbon manufacturer and tradesman, joined Wellington's army in the Peninsula as a Volunteer, was commissioned in the field in the Forty-third Light Infantry, and served through the campaigns of 1812-12. Of his letters home twenty-six (all but two of them unpublished) survive, and these have been edited by the historian Michael Glover with a general introduction, summaries of the events in the campaign covered by the letters, notes and appendices. The discovery of the letters represents a considerable find. Hennell is particularly good at conveying the detail of everyday life in the field and camp and from his vivid pen the reader can gain a first-hand officer on active service more than a century and a half ago. He is exceptional as a reporter because he not only recounts events as they happen but tries to analyse his own reactions to the dangers and horrors through which he is passing. He sometimes illustrated his letters with diagrams and fluent sketches, several of which are reproduced in this book. Hennell's story begins dramatically in the thick of the action when as a raw recruit armed only with a letter of introduction to General Picton he joins the British camp just two days before the bloody storming of the citadel of Badajoz. It ends with the victorious army descending the Pyrenees to invade the soil of France shortly before the fall of Napoleon. -- Dust jacket.

Book excerpt: This history of the American ambulance drivers corps during World War I is also a companion research reference to some of the greatest writers, editors, and philosophers of the 20th century. Young men from all parts of the country made starry eyed commitments to serving in Europe, finding a brutal reality for which Harvard or Yale had not prepared them. Among the most famous were John Dos Passos, Ernest Hemingway, E.E. Cummings, Edward Weeks, and Malcolm Cowley. Hansen (English, U. of the Pacific) has gathered together letters, writings, and research to provide the historical landscape responsible for some of the best war literature ever produced. Book excerpt: 1745 and Europe is at war. Great armies march across the continent but for Great Britain and her allies there is only defeat. Even as the Austrian Netherlands slowly fall under the occupation of the victorious French there is talk again of a Jacobite rising, a resurgence of the old Stuart cause and bloody rebellion amongst the heather.William Moore, young and naïve, taken suddenly from his genteel upbringing and expensive schooling, finds himself thrust unwillingly into the conflict. As a Gentleman Volunteer he is expected to serve honourably with the rank and file until rewarded a commission for bravery or competence. But being a soldier doesn't come naturally; immature and inept he gradually finds himself ostracised and despised by both the officers and the redcoats campaigning alongside him. Fighting during the upheaval of the War of the Austrian Succession and the 'Jacobite '45', Moore must quickly learn his trade and discover his place amongst the chaos.Through skirmishes in Flanders, to the rout of Falkirk Muir and the final climatic Battle of Culloden, Moore gradually finds his courage and standing, helped by the inspirational men and women around him. With an array of real characters gleaned from the military records and rooted in extensive historical research, The Gentleman Volunteer is a novel of conflict, love and a 'coming of age' story in the most trying of circumstances.First in the series of 'The Redcoat' novels.

Book A Gentleman of Color

Download or read book A Gentleman of Color written by Julie Winch and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-06-05 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winch has written the first full-length biography of James Forten, a hero of African American history and one of the most remarkable men in 19th-century America. Born into a free black family in 1766, Forten served in the Revolutionary War as a teenager. By 1810 he had earned the distinction of being the leading sailmaker in Philadelphia. Soon after Forten emerged as a leader in Philadelphia's black community and was active in a wide range of reform activities. Especially prominent in national and international antislavery movements, he served as vice-president of the American Anti-Slavery Society and became close friends with William Lloyd Garrison to whom he lent money to start up the Liberator. His family were all active abolitionists and a granddaughter, Charlotte Forten, published a famous diary of her experiences teaching ex-slaves in South Carolina's Sea Islands during the Civil War. This is the first serious biography of Forten, who stands beside Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, and Martin Luther King, Jr., in the pantheon of African Americans who fundamentally shaped American history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great Indian nationalist leader Subhas Chandra Bose arrived in Singapore in 1943 to revitalize the Indian National Army (INA). Taking the opportunity of the Japanese occupation of parts of Southeast Asia, he launched armed struggle against British colonial rule in India. Two years later, that attempt failed at the eastern gates of India. Yet, it was a temporary failure because the INA helped set in motion a series of developments within India. These would culminate in its freedom in a further two years. Bose is household name in India. He is remembered in Southeast Asia as well, particularly among Indians. However, while his contributions to India's independence movement have been recorded exhaustively, less is known about the legacy that he left behind in Southeast Asia. This book seeks to fill that gap in the international understanding of a great Indian nationalist and pan-Asianist. It records how participation in the nationalist struggle invested Southeast Asian Indians with a rare sense of dignity and helped foster a mushrooming of militant trade unions, making it difficult for the returning British planters to perpetuate their control over what had been a docile workforce. The INA's Rani of Jhansi movement proved to be a pioneering effort at drawing Southeast Asian Indian women out of their traditional roles and expectations. It inspired some of them to take up mainstream roles for the cause of equality and emancipation. A Gentleman's Word retraces this journey of self-discovery of those who were inspired by Subhas Chandra Bose.
