Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled New Design Methods for Perfect Reconstruction Filter Banks Submitted by Tsui Kai Man for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in August 2004 Perfect reconstruction (PR) filter banks (FBs) have found applications in signal analysis, subband coding and the construction of wavelet bases. This study considers the theory and design of two-channel structural PR FBs. One important advantage of a structural PR FB is that its design can be simplified to conventional finite-/infinite- duration impulse response (FIR/IIR) filter design problems. This study proposes a new structural FB called multi-plet FB. It generalizes structural PR FBs [Pho 1995] and triplet FBs [Ans 1999] by employing multiple lifting steps. The resulting FB is more flexible than traditional structures in choosing the system delays and the filter lengths of the analysis filters. A systematic design procedure based on second order cone programming (SOCP) is also proposed. This is particularly useful for realizing FBs with a narrow transition band. The thesis first makes a detailed study of SOCP, a powerful convex optimization method allowing linear and convex quadratic inequality constraints to be incorporated. Using this useful property, a new method for the optimal minimax and least square (LS) design of linear-phase and low-delay FIR filters with prescribed flatness and peak error is proposed. New low-delay specialized filters such as Hilbert transformers (HTs), digital differentiators (DDs), M-th band filters (MBFs), and variable digital filters (VDFs) can be designed readily by the proposed method. The proposed SOCP approach is coupled with a new constrained model reduction method, which retains the denominator of the conventional model reduction techniques and formulates the optimal design of the numerator as a SOCP, and further extended to the design of causal stable IIR filters. These novel constrained FIR/IIR design methods are then applied to the design of casual stable IIR PR triplet and multi-plet FBs. The use of a hybrid of allpass and FIR linear-phase filters also enables the bumping effect found in the conventional structural PR IIR triplet FBs to be suppressed by an appropriate choice of parameter in the triplet structure. Wavelet FBs can also be obtained by the proposed constrained filter design approach. For the multi-plet FB, a low order prototype PR FB with a much wider transition band is first designed using non-linear optimization in order to obtain a symmetric frequency response and prescribed passband/stopband ripples. A subfilter is then designed using SOCP which enables the prototype FB to be wrapped by means of frequency transformation to meet the desired transition bandwidth while preserving the PR condition, passband/stopband ripples and lifting structure. The design procedure is very robust, and can be applied to both linear- phase and low-delay multi-plet FBs. By formulating the K-regularity conditions as a set of linear equality constraints on the subfilter coefficients, multi-plet-based wavelet bases can easily be designed under the SOCP framework. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is illustrated with several design examples. Book Design Techniques for Uniform Dft Linear Phase Filter Banks

This book was released on 2018-06-15 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uniform-DFT filter banks are an important class of filter banks and their theory is well known. One notable characteristic is their very efficient implementation when using polyphase filters and the FFT. Separately, linear phase filter banks, i.e. filter banks in which the analysis filters have a linear phase are also an important class of filter banks and desired in many applications. Unfortunately, it has been proved that one cannot design critically-sampled, uniform-DFT, linear phase filter banks and achieve perfect reconstruction. In this paper, we present a least-squares solution to this problem and in addition prove that oversampled, uniform-DFT, linear phase filter banks (which are also useful in many applications) can be constructed for perfect reconstruction. Design examples are included illustrate the methods. Sun, Honglin and DeLeon, Phillip Goddard Space Flight Center

Book Polyphase Structure based Approaches for FIR Mth band Filters and Constrained Filter Banks

This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multirate systems, including M th-band filters and filter banks, have greatly facilitated the analysis, understanding and compression of signals. Polyphase structure plays an important role in the study of multirate systems due to the fact that it provides a parallel and very efficient implementation architecture. In this dissertation, some polyphase structure-based approaches for the design and implementation of M th-band filters as well as filter banks are presented. The emphasis is placed on the development of new structures that satisfy certain constraints and having low computational complexity. A design algorithm for M th-band filters is first presented based on the generalized polyphase (GP) structure. Both the interpolation and linear-phase conditions are incorporated in the proposed GP realization of M th-band filters. By deriving a closed-form frequency response specification for each of the constituent filters in the GP structure, the design of the original large-tap FIR filter is simplified to the design of short-length constituent filters to reduce the overall design complexity. The GP-based approach is then extended for the design of M th-band filters meeting certain regularity requirements. To show the wide applicability of the proposed method, the design of 2-D M th-band filters via the GP structure is also considered. It is shown that by applying the singular-value decomposition (SVD) to each 2-D subfilter in the GP structure, the implementation complexity of the overall 2-D filter can be significantly reduced without introducing a large error. The second part of the dissertation is concerned with the development of new lattice structures for perfect reconstruction filter banks (PRFBs) with certain constraints, such as the linear-phase (LP) and the minor-image symmetry (MIS). The innovative work is based on the polyphase matrix representation of the analysis and synthesis filters, and a key idea of devising basic building blocks that are capable of propagating the desirable symmetry properties while being cascaded to generate the required lattice structures. Due to the added constraints, the resulting lattice structures have fewer parameters, leading to a speedy optimization design and a reduction in the heavy implementation burden. It is proved that there exists a complete and minimal lattice structure for MIS-PRFBs. It is shown that a class of well-known filter banks, namely, the cosine-modulated filter banks (CMFBs), is a subclass of MIS-PRFBs, whose non-singular matrices are of sparse coefficients. By introducing more prototype filters, in conjunction with a proper modulation, new CMFBs with more parameters are generated. Combining the linear-phase and mirror-image symmetries, a lattice structure with further reduced number of parameters is also developed for MIS-LPPRFB. The designed MIS-LPPRFB is then utilized as a block transform for image compression coding. Simulation results show that the MIS-LPPRFB, despite its reduced number of parameters, offers a competitive performance in terms of both the visual quality and the peak signal-to-noise ratio for various images under a wide range of compression ratios.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled New Design and Factorization Methods for Perfect Reconstruction Causal Stable IIR Filter Banks Submitted by Yin Shishu for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in November 2006 Filter Banks (FBs) have important applications in speech, audio, image and array processing. This thesis is concerned with the theory, design and factorization of causal stable infinite impulse response (IIR) FBs in both two-channel and M-channel cases. The design of perfect reconstruction (PR) or nearly perfect reconstruction (NPR) FBs is usually obtained by iterative procedures involving nonlinear constrained optimization. When the number of variables and constraints increases, the optimization procedure is rather sensitive to the initial value of FBs, especially for cases with low reconstruction delay. In this thesis, a new method for designing two-channel and M-channel NPR finite impulse response (FIR) FBs is presented. These FBs are designed to have an approximate cosine rolloff transition band so that the flatness conditions are automatically satisfied. The design problem can be formulated as a convex optimization problem. NPR FIR FBs so designed have a reasonably low reconstruction error and good frequency performance. Then, they are used as the initial guess for further optimization to obtain high quality PR FIR FBs. A new modified model reduction technique for designing NPR IIR FBs is presented. The polyphase components of these FBs are designed to have an identical denominator. Hence, the PR condition is considerably simplified. Another advantage of the proposed method is that the stability of the IIR filters is guaranteed and the NPR IIR FBs so obtained can be used as the initial guess for designing PR IIR FBs. To preserve the PR property after coefficient quantization, a new factorization technique of two-channel and M-channel IIR FBs is proposed. The proposed factorization is based on the lifting scheme and the implementation complexity is reduced by an approximate factor of two. Using these results, the resulting IIR FBs become PR structurally. Since the factorization is highly non-unique, a new method is further developed to select the factorization which has a smaller dynamic range of the lifting coefficients. The small dynamic range is very useful to the multiplier-less realization of IIR FBs whose lifting coefficients can be implemented as canonical signed digits (CSD) or sum of powers of two (SOPOT) coefficients. Because of the reduced arithmetic complexity, this approach is very attractive for VLSI implementation. To offer more flexibility in time-frequency partitioning and better performance in applications such as signal analysis and coding, a new class of NPR low-delay (LD) FIR and IIR recombination nonuniform FBs (RNFBs) is proposed. To suppress the spurious response possibly found in the stopband of the resulting analysis filter in the LD FIR RNFB, a matching condition between the original uniform FB and the recombination FB is developed. The general NPR IIR RNFB can be obtained by converting the resulting LD FIR RNFB using the modified model reduction technique mentioned earlier. Since there are a large number of variables for designing general M-channel IIR RNFBs, it is difficult to satisfy both PR and stability constraints. Therefore, CMFBs are considere

Book Non uniform band Digital Filter Banks

Book excerpt: New design techniques of digital filter banks are presented in this thesis. The research has been focused on systematic design methods for computationally efficient filter banks with arbitrary center frequencies, which could be easily implemented and are useful in acoustic, speech signal processing, and communication systems. Frequency interpolation filter banks (FIFB) are first derived based on an adaptive filtering structure. FIFB banks show good frequency responses, interesting sensitivities and negligible parameter quantization effects and roundoff noise when they are implemented using modern DSP processors with fixed-point arithmetic. For maximally flat FIFB filter banks, the adjusted pole selection strategy by an optimization procedure is applied. Then, the resonator-based arbitrarily spaced center frequency filter banks (RFB) are proposed. They show better behaviour than general FIFB banks from the point of view of frequency responses and the implementation. In order to suppress the non-negligible sidelobes and further improve the passband performance of the non-uniform band filter banks, frequency domain windowing techniques are studied and linear programming is used to produce optimal windows for different banks. Thus the design methods of non-uniform band filter banks with windowing processing are presented and significant improvements are obtained on the filter bank performance. Finally, the FIFB filter bank techniques are successfully extended to the field of allpass and perfect reconstruction analysis/synthesis systems. This widens the application area of the FIFB filter banks. In an allpass system, a synthesis FIFB filter bank is derived based on a general analysis FIFB bank and the allpass requirement. In the perfect reconstruction system, multirate techniques are applied and the efficient general FIR synthesis filter bank and IIR FIFB filter bank are designed to construct the system.
