Book excerpt: Excerpt from Viets Family: Dr. John Viets of Simsbury, Connecticut, (1710) And His Descendants Of the origin of the surname Viets, little. Is known with certainty. The name occurs in various forms in different parts of Germany, and is probably of Teutonic origin. Of the several explanations of the origin of the name, none are without objec tions. Preper names, unlike ordinary words, are often changed at the caprice of the individual, and thus it becomes impossible to trace them back to their origin, especially in distant nations and ages. The present spelling of the name Viets was unknown until about 1750. Dr. John Viets, who settled in Simsbury in 1710, wrote his name John Viett. After his death the name was written by his sons, Vietts. This addition of an s would seem to imply that it had already been pronounced, and perhaps at an earlier period the name was written Vietz, the z after wards being substituted by t, and finally by ts.
