This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Genealogical History of the Scripps Family and Its Various Alliances The notable facts concerning every member of the family are given where in their characters or achievements anything notable is known. It cannot fail to be noticed how large a part the family have borne, in a modest way, in the history of the past century and a half, and particularly in the development of our own western country. A directory of the names, places of residence and occupation of all living members of the family will be found in the later pages of the book. Blank pages are provided at the end of the volume for the continuation of the record in manuscript. I trust they will be used, and urgently request that transcripts of all such additional records be sent to me for the perfecting from time to time of my own copy. Where so many members of the family have interested them selves to aid me with information, it would be invidious to single out any for special acknowledgments. My sincere thanks are due to all who have in any way aided me in the work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Memorials of the Scripps Family

Download or read book Memorials of the Scripps Family written by James E. Scripps and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-18 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorials of the Scripps Family: A Centennial Tribute Over nine years ago I published in a pamphlet of 28 pages a History of the Scripps Family. It had scarcely appeared before a mass of fresh information on the sub ject came to my hands, and this has continued steadily to accumulate up to the present date. This new light does not materially alter the facts as related in the publication of 1882, nor does it carry the history at all further back, but it clears up many points of uncertainty and supplies much interesting detail. After having for nine years industriously collected all I possibly could regarding the family, I now, in the centennial year of the. Emigration of the major portion to America, proceed to edit my collee tions and reduce them to print. With due respect, I herewith dedicate my little volume to the memory of William and Grace Scripps, who, in 1791, planted the family on this continent. Book The Prescott Memorial Or a Genealogical Memoir of the Prescott Families in America

Download or read book The Prescott Memorial Or a Genealogical Memoir of the Prescott Families in America written by William Prescott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 718 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prescott Memorial, or a Genealogical Memoir of the Prescott Families in America: In Two Parts To any one acquainted with genealogical investigations it need not be said that the collection of facts embraced in the following Memorial required great labor. Thorough and patient investigation, strong deter mination, and much expense, combined with great anxiety, embarrass ing difficulties, and perplexity, arising from various causes, to say nothing of the indifference of some, and the discrepancy in the records of {others of the connection. But it has been the anxious solicitude of the author to overcome all these difficulties, as far as practicable, and to produce as full, as correct, and as perfect a record as the means attainable Would permit. Yet such is the complication, difficulty and perplexity of the task, that it cannot be presumed to be complete as a whole, or free from error in its details. The descendants have become so numerous and so dispersed over our extensive domain, and almost throughout the world, that very many members, and even whole families have become so lost to the rest, that their history, and even their locality has become unknown. Consequently many vacancies will be found to exist in various parts of the work.ale The obstacles and discouragements which attended the commencement of the investigation have been referred to elsewhere. But as the researches progressed, obstacles were removed, hidden facts and secluded records were unfolded and brought to light, and light and hope supplanted darkness and ignorance. The more the facts that were brought to light, and the more records the author obtained, the more ea'ger he was to prosecute his inquiries, to pursue his investiga tions, and accomplish his cherished object. D. 1717, and of His Descendants Bearing the name of the family whose genealogy we here present, and feeling an almost romantic love for it, many of whose members have made life thrice happy, we have no apology to offer for our work, and regret only that abler hands would not attempt it. If any complain of its brevity or imperfections, let them consider the nature of the work and the obstacles to be overcome. Many of the families to whom we have applied for information have responded promptly, but the indifference of others has rendered it impossible to secure accuracy and completeness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As media environments and communication practices evolve over time, so do theoretical concepts. This book analyzes some of the most well-known and fiercely discussed concepts of the digital age from a historical perspective, showing how many of them have pre-digital roots and how they have changed and still are constantly changing in the digital era. Written by leading authors in media and communication studies, the chapters historicize 16 concepts that have become central in the digital media literature, focusing on three main areas. The first part, Technologies and Connections, historicises concepts like network, media convergence, multimedia, interactivity and artificial intelligence. The second one is related to Agency and Politics and explores global governance, datafication, fake news, echo chambers, digital media activism. The last one, Users and Practices, is finally devoted to telepresence, digital loneliness, amateurism, user generated content, fandom and authenticity. The book aims to shed light on how concepts emerge and are co-shaped, circulated, used and reappropriated in different contexts. It argues for the need for a conceptual media and communication history that will reveal new developments without concealing continuities and it demonstrates how the analogue/digital dichotomy is often a misleading one.

Book The Century of the Gene

  • Author : Evelyn Fox KELLER

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a book that promises to change the way we think and talk about genes and genetic determinism, Evelyn Fox Keller, one of our most gifted historians and philosophers of science, provides a powerful, profound analysis of the achievements of genetics and molecular biology in the twentieth century, the century of the gene. Not just a chronicle of biology’s progress from gene to genome in one hundred years, The Century of the Gene also calls our attention to the surprising ways these advances challenge the familiar picture of the gene most of us still entertain. Keller shows us that the very successes that have stirred our imagination have also radically undermined the primacy of the gene—word and object—as the core explanatory concept of heredity and development. She argues that we need a new vocabulary that includes concepts such as robustness, fidelity, and evolvability. But more than a new vocabulary, a new awareness is absolutely crucial: that understanding the components of a system (be they individual genes, proteins, or even molecules) may tell us little about the interactions among these components. With the Human Genome Project nearing its first and most publicized goal, biologists are coming to realize that they have reached not the end of biology but the beginning of a new era. Indeed, Keller predicts that in the new century we will witness another Cambrian era, this time in new forms of biological thought rather than in new forms of biological life.

Book excerpt: "Originally commenced as a pastime, and to please a circle of friends alone, success, in any degree, can only be hoped for, because of my vantage ground as an intimate and close friend of Mr. Lincoln, and because, by reason of such intimacy, of the novelty of some of the facts and deductions, and not, in any sense, by reason, but in spite of, its literary style or, rather, the lack thereof."--Preface.
