Book When Spirits Speak A Gathering of Heroes

Download or read book When Spirits Speak A Gathering of Heroes written by Jeri K. Tory Conklin and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories in this book are from soldiers who once served in Vietnam and who have contacted me via the world of spirit. Their stories are filled with the dreams of young men who grew into adults all too quickly in a land not their own. They speak of the bond between soldiers; the brotherhood that stands the test of time and distance; the fear they lived with each day; how they wrote letters that would be sent to their families if they were killed; and the simple things they came to take for granted. Some speak of their love of Vietnam and its people. And many of them convey their last few hours on the earthly plane. "Jeri Tory Conklin-a gifted intuitive, archaeologist, and investigative author-again lifts the veil between the visible and invisible world, this time to give us an inside perspective on veteran experiences during the Vietnam War. An eye-opening, inspirational book." -Patricia Johnston, professor of anthropology; owner, grief coach at Purple Lotus Coaching http: //purplelotuscoaching.com/ "Seeking answers to "Why, is there no peace?" comes to us all when we send a loved one or venture into the path of war. Living without closure bids us to seek out those with "The Gift" of sight into the world of spirit. I have found closure within these pages. Your eyes will be opened, if you have lost a loved one to death on a battlefield. " -Pamelia Cannataro, military dependent and Vietnam veteran's widow

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 29 April 1992, Baywatch star GregAlan Williams walked into the intersection of Florence and Normandie avenues -- the heart of South Central Los Angeles -- and into the midst of the worst riot in America's history. Summoning courage born from the examples of his own personal heroes, Williams rescued Takao Hirata from an angry mob armed with bottles and rods. Through an endless shower of projectiles, he managed to drag the nearly lifeless man to safety. In this account of that traumatic event and its complex, fascinating aftermath, Williams vividly captures the sights and sounds of that tragic day, setting them against the background of his own life. He recalls his own experiences with racism and his own violent behaviour when he was in the Marines. All of these experiences are grist for William's mill as he reflects on the consequences of rage, on the ambiguity of attitudes of race, and most importantly, on the obligation we bear when confronted with the mindless face of violence.

The Old Ways are dying, and their followers retreating into the shadows; even still, Grimnir’s vengeance cannot be denied. Taking a young Christian hostage to be his guide, Grimnir embarks on a journey that takes him from the hinterlands of Denmark, where the wisdom of the ancient dwarves has given way to madness, to the war-torn heart of southern England, where the spirits of the land make violence on one another. And thence to the green shores of Ireland and the Viking stronghold of Dubhlinn, where his enemy awaits. But, unless Grimnir can set aside his hatreds, his dream of retribution will come to nothing. For Dubhlinn is set to be the site of a reckoning—the Old Ways versus the New—and Grimnir, the last of his kind left to plague mankind, must choose: stand with the Christian King of Ireland and see his vengeance done or stand against him and see it slip away?

Download or read book Butch Heroes written by Ria Brodell and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portraits and texts recover lost queer history: the lives of people who didn't conform to gender norms, from the fifteenth through the twentieth centuries. “A serious—and seriously successful—queer history recovery project.” —Publishers Weekly Katherina Hetzeldorfer, tried “for a crime that didn't have a name” (same sex sexual relations) and sentenced to death by drowning in 1477; Charles aka Mary Hamilton, publicly whipped for impersonating a man in eighteenth-century England; Clara, aka “Big Ben,” over whom two jealous women fought in 1926 New York: these are just three of the lives that the artist Ria Brodell has reclaimed for queer history in Butch Heroes. Brodell offers a series of twenty-eight portraits of forgotten but heroic figures, each accompanied by a brief biographical note. They are individuals who were assigned female at birth but whose gender presentation was more masculine than feminine, who did not want to enter into heterosexual marriage, and who often faced dire punishment for being themselves. Brodell's detailed and witty paintings are modeled on Catholic holy cards, slyly subverting a religious template. The portraits and the texts offer intriguing hints of lost lives: cats lounge in the background of domestic settings; one of the figures is said to have been employed variously as “a prophet, a soldier, or a textile worker”; another casually holds a lit cigarette. Brodell did extensive research for each portrait, piecing together a life from historical accounts, maps, journals, paintings, drawings, and photographs, finding the heroic in the forgotten.
