Book A Gardener s Year Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Gardener s Year Classic Reprint written by H. Rider Haggard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Gardener's Year Many a book have I sat down to commence, all of them with a humble heart, but none that I can remember in quite such earnest fear and trembling as this gardener's diary for the year 1903. For more seasons than I care to count I have been a gardener in sundry lands, following that most ancient craft with a single mind, and not, I hope, Without learning some of its mysteries. And yet how much remains to learn, more than ever can be learned by me. My case is not singular, however, and herein lies consolation; at least never yet have I met the man or woman who knew everything about gardening, least of all among those who follow it by profession. These for the most part are good flower-men, or good vegetable-men, or they understand Grapes, or can grow Violets - but fail with Roses and other things. Or per chance, but this is rare, though many there be who swear it, Orchids are their forte. (here I may say at once, speaking as a modest amateur of these last-named lovely plants, rather would I hire a man who had never seen one of them. Of course there are many exceptions, still every grower should pray to be delivered from the new head who understands Orchids. Better far take a novice who is Willing to learn, and train him.) Book Germantown Gardens and Gardeners Classic Reprint

Download or read book Germantown Gardens and Gardeners Classic Reprint written by Edwin Costley Jellett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Germantown Gardens and Gardeners Garden is an open place reserved for plants, and a gardener is a person who helps a plant to grow. Upon this broad interpretation we set out. Before venturing to cross an unsurveyed country, it will be well for a traveller to fix the view points, for otherwise he may wander far astray. We, in essaying a rapid journey through trackless fields, may not linger, but must onward press, keeping in sight the land-mark upon the objective hill. For direction and distinctness we have divided Our subject into three parts; the Formative period extending from 1683 to i740, -during which German Towne was founded, when it became a village with its houses and business confined to a Pike, its interests being largely agricultural - the period Of development, extending from 1740 to 18 54, - during which the village expanded to the measure of a town, wherein farms gave way to estates, when pretentious gardens were prepared, and professional gardeners appeared; - and the modern period, extending from the year 18 54 to the year 191 I, - during which marked changes were made, elaborate gardens ourished, and wherein Germantown became an integral part Of the great city Of Philadelphia. Book The Education Of A Gardener

Download or read book The Education Of A Gardener written by Russell Page and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2007-07-03 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russell Page, one of the legendary gardeners and landscapers of the twentieth century, designed gardens great and small for clients throughout the world. His memoirs, born of a lifetime of sketching, designing, and working on site, are a mixture of engaging personal reminiscence, keen critical intelligence, and practical know-how. They are not only essential reading for today’s gardeners, but a master’s compelling reflection on the deep sources and informing principles of his art. The Education of a Gardener offers charming, sometimes pointed anecdotes about patrons, colleagues, and, of course, gardens, together with lucid advice for the gardener. Page discusses how to plan a garden that draws on the energies of the surrounding landscape, determine which plants will do best in which setting, plant for the seasons, handle color, and combine trees, shrubs, and water features to rich and enduring effect. To read The Education of a Gardener is to wander happily through a variety of gardens in the company of a wise, witty, and knowledgeable friend. It will provide pleasure and insight not only to the dedicated gardener, but to anyone with an interest in abiding questions of design and aesthetics, or who simply enjoys an unusually well-written and thoughtful book.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Garden Week by Week, Throughout the Year A brief calendar of gardening Operations throughout the year has formed an item in many books On horti culture it has been put in as a kind of summary. Readers have not been wanting who have declared that the few pages at the end of such volumes are the most useful parts of them, and that many more pro minent portions are negligible. This suggests that a book which is wholly calen darial, but illustrated with practical figures as well as photographs and coloured plates, might secure a good constituency; hence the preparation Of the present volume. It does not contain anything whatever about Garden Art, nor about the general principles of gardening. (i have dealt with them in its predecessor The Perfect Garden. It is composed Of. N 0 real touch of winter yet; just a soft pause between the seasons, giving you the best of both. Not 1 too warm, as it had been; not too cold, as it would be. This was the time of year and the time of day that the old man loved best. He couldn't get around so much now, ' but they had made up his bed by the cottage win dow, and there he would sit, half waking and half sleep ing, dreaming of this and that. From where he sat, propped up among his cushions, he could see into the Manor gardens. Not what they were - not by a long chalk. Mind you, it was only fair to admit they were still a bit short-handed, and you had to take the dry summer into account, but these young fellows ought to have made a better job of it than that. When he was a young chap, he had to move at double their pace. No slipping off when the clock struck for him. Hours he'd spent watering when the sun was off the borders. But not today. That meantovertime, and where was the money to pay for that? So the old garden wasn't what it had been when he was in charge. Everything was different to What it was in his day. They earned more money, and that was only right. But the more they got, the less they seemed to care. You had to be proud of a garden to do any good with it. Gardening was a whole-time job, like the cows or the sheep. Cows had to be milked, whatever happened; and who thought of stopping in bed when the sheep were lambing? In a garden, you had to work with the seasons. There were slack times, when you could take an easy with a pipe behind the tool shed, but when the grass started growing and the weeds were getting on top of you, there was an end to all that nonsense Hours he'd spent watering. But these young fel lowm.. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
