Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Reader Doubtless the best method of learning to read French, or any other language, is to read; and, since to be able to read French texts with ease is what is generally most desired by our students of French, it follows that that method of instruction is the best, which leads most directly to this goal. A language can best be studied "in action;" and to make pupils, especially young beginners, perspire for weeks and months over grammatical dry bones, before allowing them to come in contact with the language en masse, is irksome both to pupil and teacher, and can, therefore, never produce the best results. It was to meet the wants of teachers who believe in early and copious reading, that this book has been prepared. The selections are all sufficiently long to give the pupil time to get interested in them, and thus encourage him to read on his own account in advance of what is actually required by the instructor. I have always found pupils willing to finish a piece, even if beyond the average length of the lessons, while they would have read with far less spirit if the additional pensum had been a new piece. This is in no sense a "Classical French Reader." There are already many of those in the market, and whoever wants a book of that kind need not stop to examine this one.
