Book A Fragmentation Model for Cylindrical Warheads

Download or read book A Fragmentation Model for Cylindrical Warheads written by John Pearson and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a descriptive model for the expansion and fragmentation behavior for the case of a single-point, end-initiated cylindrical warhead. This model divides the overall behavioral process of the warhead case into four distinct zones of behavior which occur between initial case motion and fragment impact. The report describes what is happening in each zone in terms of (1) the physical behavior of the warhead case and (2) the respective velocities of the metal case or fragments. This model is based on the results of numerous experimental studies using high speed photography and fragmentation test arenas. Several examples in the use of the model are presented based on these studies.

Book A Scaling Law for Fragmenting Cylindrical Warheads

Download or read book A Scaling Law for Fragmenting Cylindrical Warheads written by Clarence E. WEINLAND and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existing scaling laws for the prediction of fragment velocities from cylindrical warheads are examined, and a new law is proposed. Tests of the new law are shown, using the best known fragment velocity data. The new law is used for correlating previously unpublished data on length-to-diameter ratio effects and on the behavior of axially hollow warheads. Possibilities for profitable future investigations are outlined in studies of length-to-diameter ratio effects, and in the use of modifications of the new scaling law for correlating 'open-face-sandwich' plate velocity data and fragment velocities from speherical warheads. Book Fragmentation of Shallow Grooved Warhead

Download or read book Fragmentation of Shallow Grooved Warhead written by and published by . This book was released on 1953 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This test was conducted to determine the ability of shallow coined grooves, 1/16 in. deep and in a square grid pattern to control fragment size in a warhead model. The warhead used was No. 142, cylindrical, 4-1/8 in. in diameter, with a 3/8 in. wall, and Composition C-3 loaded. The grid-pattern shallow grooves of Warhead No. 142 were unsatisfactory in controlling fragment size. It is believed that grooves having depths of greater than 50% of wall thickness are needed for controlling fragment size in a warhead of this design.

Book Computational and Experimental Determination of Fragmentation for Naturally Fragmenting Warheads

Download or read book Computational and Experimental Determination of Fragmentation for Naturally Fragmenting Warheads written by Willis Mock (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computational and experimental investigation of the fragmentation response of Armco iron and HF-1 steel explosively filled cylinders and an HF-1 steel projectile is presented. SRI International Lagrangian finite-difference stress wave propagation codes that contain brittle fracture and shear banding models were used for the computational simulations. Gas gun Hugoniot and soft-recovery experiments were performed for HF-1 steel to determine input parameters for the brittle fracture model. Cylinder and projectile fragment mass distributions were experimentally determined for comparison with the simulations. Cylinder computations and experiments were performed for two heat treatments of HF-1 steel to investigate microstructural changes on the fragmentation behavior. Computed stress, particle velocity, and crack concentration histories are presented for an HF-1 steel cylinder. A scheme was devised for characterizing the recovered fragments from the cylinder and projectile experiments with respect to their fracture surfaces. (Author).

  • Pages : 484 pages

Download or read book Energetic Materials written by Manoj K. Shukla and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-09 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive account of energetic materials, including their synthesis, computational modeling, applications, associated degradation mechanisms, environmental consequences and fate and transport. This multi-author contributed volume describes how armed forces around the world are moving their attention from legacy explosive compounds, which are heat and shock sensitive (thus posing greater challenges in terms of handling and storage), to the insensitive munitions compounds/formulations such as insensitive munitions explosive (IMX) and the Picatinny Arsenal Explosive (PAX) series of compounds. The description of energetic materials focuses on explosives, pyrotechnic compositions, and propellants. The contributors go on to explain how modern generation energetic compounds must be insensitive to shock and heat but at the same time yield more energy upon explosion. Nanoinspired and/or co-crystallized energetic materials offer another route to generate next-generation energetic materials, and this authoritative book bridges a large gap in the literature by providing a comprehensive analysis of these compounds. Additionally, it includes a valuable overview of energetic materials, a detailed discussion of recent advances on future energetic compounds, nanotechnology in energetic materials, environmental contamination and toxicity, assessment of munitions lethality, the application quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) in design of energetics and the fate and transport of munition compounds in the environment.

Book Cylinder Expansion Gurney Constant and Warhead Fragmentation Part 2 Computerized Data Reduction

Download or read book Cylinder Expansion Gurney Constant and Warhead Fragmentation Part 2 Computerized Data Reduction written by and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development of a cylinder expansion test for use in assessing the metal acceleration capability of explosives is discussed. A precisely manufactured metal cylinder is filled with explosive, and its wall expansion during detonation is observed with a streak camera. The photographic record of the cylinder expansion is analyzed by mechanized film reading and high speed computer techniques. The maximum velocity attained by the wall fragments is taken as a measure of the momentum imparted to the metal by the explosive. Both manual and automated methods of data reduction for attainment of test results are given. When standardized, this test procedure will permit the correlation of the evaluations of explosive compounds between laboratories. The computerized reduction of the pictorial data to tabular listings and graphic displays is also discussed.

Book Analysis of Fragmentation and Resulting Shrapnel Penetration of Naturally Fragmenting Cylindrical Bombs

Download or read book Analysis of Fragmentation and Resulting Shrapnel Penetration of Naturally Fragmenting Cylindrical Bombs written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fragmentation of exploding cylinders and penetration mechanics of surrounding vessel walls were examined and a qualitative understanding was achieved. This understanding provided a basis for making simplifying approximations and assumptions that aided in creating a shrapnel penetration model. Several mathematical models were discussed, and results from 6 cylinder tests were analyzed in order to select a model that best represented the data. It was determined that the overall best mathematical model to predict shrapnel penetration uses the modified Gurney equation to calculate fragment velocity, the Mott equation to calculate largest fragment weight, and the Christman/Gehring equation to calculate penetration depth.

This book was released on 2005-10-13 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Substantialfundamental workhas been undertaken inthe different aspects of impact biomechanics over the past three decades. Much of this has been motivated and undertaken bythe automotive industry intheirefforts to improve transport safety. More recently, however, it has become app- ent that themultidisciplinary synergies which are realisedby interactions between engineers, scientists and clinical practitioners will ultimately lead to a greater understanding of the complex interacting phenomena withinthe human bodyafter it has sustained an impact. In turn, this greater depth of knowledge will provide more fundamentalinsights into the analysis, d- gnosis, treatment and prevention ofimpact injuries across a broader sp- trum of accident environments. Thescienti?c focus of this IUTAM symposium istoaddress those t- ics that are centrally important to the biomechanics ofimpact. These can be groupedinto those that are concerned with the different causes of - cidents (e. g., transport, occupational and sports injuries), themechanics - volvedinaccident analysis (e. g., accident investigation, computational m- elling techniques), the different types of resulting traumatic injuries (incl- ing musculoskeletal, organ, spinal and head injuries), methods of asse- ing the extent of injury (e. g., injury assessment, injury criteria, constitutive laws for human tissue), and providing protection during an impact (e. g., injury prevention, energy absorption materials, and safety devices).
