Book The Bargain Sector

Download or read book The Bargain Sector written by Kate Meagher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001: Does the non-farm sector offer new hope for rural Africa? In the face of economic crisis and restructuring across Africa, small-scale enterprise has come to play a central role in rural livelihood and accumulation strategies. This apparent dynamism has attracted favourable attention from development thinkers and policy-makers, who have identified non-farm enterprise as a new low-cost agent of rural development. The research in this book challenges the growing consensus on the developmental potential of the non-farm sector. On the basis of recent fieldwork, the author argues that the prospects for non-farm led growth have been seriously undermined by the crippling pressures of structural adjustment, agricultural instability and rural as well as interregional inequality. Detailed village case-studies from the populous and highly commercialized grain surplus region of the Nigerian savanna leads the reader to investigate the link between local economic and social realities, and the wider regional, national and global processes that form the development of the non-farm sector in Africa. Far from offering a bargain solution, the author demonstrates that significant investment in agriculture and entrepreneurial development will be needed to create an enabling environment for non-farm growth.

This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An American Captain tells the story of his unit of artillery in the Front Lines of the Western front through the battles of St Mihiel and the Argonne to the ceasefire. An acclaimed classic account of an American Officer whose battery fought bravely as part of the American Expeditionary Forces in 1918. The unedited journal, which was kept by the author on his person at all times, is a gem of reportage filled with scenes that vividly portray the battle front and at times the sheer brutality of war. His unit were cited for their accurate and deadly work with their French-made 75 mm. guns, and despite the unit not often being more than 1000 yards away from the trenchlines the efficiency of the battery allowed the author time to write. Not polished or damaged by post-war editing the author’s diary retains its freshness and immediacy of the shell-torn trenches of the French countryside. “Diary, August—November 1918, of a U.S. Field Artillery unit—75mm guns—attached to the 33rd Division. One of the best American artillery accounts” - p. 120, Edward Lengel, World War I Memories, 2004, The Scarecrow Press, Lanham Maryland, Toronto, Oxford.

Book Shariah and the Halal Industry

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid expansion of the halal industry and its markets has occurred not only in the heavily Islamic regions of Southeast Asia and the Middle East, but also in more unexpected countries such as Turkey, Japan, and South Korea, plus many others around the world. Yet despite both the increasing number of practicing Muslims and the demand for halal products worldwide, a base of scholarship on the subject has never emerged. The industry has been more market driven rather than knowledge driven. As such, industry operators have frequently drawn attention to the absence of such an authoritative text, one that would elucidate the shariah credibly of halal as well as its market presence. Mohammad Hashim Kamali's Shariah and the Halal Industry is designed to fill this gap. The first of its kind in the English language, the book is written in an accessible and reader-friendly style by a world-renowned authority on Islamic law and jurisprudence. The book serves as a reference on the shariah foundations of halal and meets the needs not only of industry operators and decision-makers, but also of students, scholars of Islam, and the many practicing Muslims who are customers of the halal industry across the globe. The book can also serve to educate the general public and non-specialist readers on Islam and shariah law at-large.
