Book Exercise Knowledge and Behavior

Download or read book Exercise Knowledge and Behavior written by Joshua Wludyga and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous research suggested former athletes exhibit no differences in exercise habits as the general population. However, the extent of knowledge of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) exercise recommendations as an influence of exercise habits is not fully demonstrated. The purpose of this study was to determine the exercise behaviors and level of exercise knowledge or former athletes compared to members of the general population. Additionally, the potential influences a health education course provided in maintaining health and exercise habits once community college athletes terminate their competitive career was examined. A total of 454 participants consisting of former community college athletes of various sports, as well as non-athlete graduates submitted a brief survey that assessed level of knowledge regarding current exercise recommendations, as well as comparing current aerobic exercise habits. Athletes and non-athletes were then separated into groups based on their previous enrollment in a freshmen level health education course. Chi-square analyses were utilized to assess comparisons of accuracy of the ACSM exercise recommendations, while a one-way Aanlysis of Covariance assessed differences in current exercise behaviors. Results indicated no differences in accuracy of the ACSM recommendations regardless of athletes or health education background. Significant differences in exercise frequency were demonstrated between former athletes with health education and non-athletes with no health education. Significant differences in exercise duration were shown between former athletes with no health education background and both non-athletes with health education and no health education. An a posteriori t-test revealed accurate responders had higher exercise volumes than inaccurate responders. In conclusion, the health education course had no apparent long-term impact on exercise behaviors. Athletic background had a statistically significant impact on current exercise habhits more so than educational background. However, future reseearch is warranted to evaluate the impact of other educational opportunities as well as trends in declining exercise habits over time among all groups.

Book Evaluating Contextual Body Image Eating and Exercise Behaviors in College Athletes

Download or read book Evaluating Contextual Body Image Eating and Exercise Behaviors in College Athletes written by Katherine E. McManus and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current study assessed the associations between disordered eating, excessive exercise, and contextual body image within a sample of Division I college student-athletes. Sixty-five student-athletes anonymously completed an online survey consisting of a series of eating, exercise, and body image related assessments followed by open-ended questions regarding their motivation to workout and overall student-athlete and college experience. Results indicated that there was no significant association between excessive exercise and disordered eating (r = .19, p = .130; two-tailed), however, there was a significant association between athletic identity and excessive exercise (r = .433, p = .0003). Point biserial correlations and Welch sample t-tests revealed that gender had a significant association with disordered eating (rpb = .324, n = 65, p = .009) however, sport-type did not (rpb = .044, n = 65, p = .729). The current study is consistent with prior research showing that females score higher on scales of disordered eating behavior than males. Furthermore, this study provides evidence to suggest that female athletes may experience differences with their body image, particularly their shape (rpb = .256, n = 65, p = .04), in different contexts (i.e., in daily life context) compared to male athletes. Follow up research should continue to examine the impact of athletic identity, excessive exercise, and disordered eating for all athletes regardless of sport-type and gender.

This book was released on 2021-03-01 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Research Topic of Frontiers in Physiology is dedicated to the memory of Professor Nigel Stepto, the Lead Guest Editor of this collection, who sadly passed away during its formation. Prof Stepto was a passionate and recognised world leader in the field of Exercise Physiology with outstanding contributions, particularly in the area of women’s reproductive health. Nigel’s research passion was in understanding the mechanistic effects of exercise for health and therapy with a special interest in insulin resistance and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, the leading cause of anovulatory infertility in young women of reproductive age. He was the co-Deputy Director - Research Training at the Institute of Health and Sport (IHeS) at Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia and held adjunct associate professorial roles at Monash University and the University of Melbourne. He was Chair of the Exercise and Sports Science Association (ESSA) Research Committee, Project Director of the Australian Institute for Musculoskeletal Science (AIMSS) and an active member of the Australian Physiological Society (AuPS). Alongside his influential research career and leadership roles, Nigel was a strong advocate for postgraduate and early career researchers. His collaborative nature and approach to research ensured those mentored by him were considered, included and valued members across his many research projects and initiatives. Nigel’s impact and influence on the careers of early researchers will continue at Victoria University with both a Nigel Stepto Travel Award and Nigel Stepto PhD Scholarship established in his honour. Nigel was great friend and colleague to many who is very much missed. Nigel is survived by his wife, Fiona and two children Matilda (14 years) and Harriet (11 years).
