Download or read book The Longleaf Pine Ecosystem written by Shibu Jose and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-05-18 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The longleaf pine ecosystem, once one of the most extensive ecosystems in North America, is now among the most threatened. Over the past few centuries, land clearing, logging, fire suppression, and the encroachment of more aggressive plants have led to an overwhelming decrease in the ecosystem’s size, to approximately 2.2% of its original coverage. Despite this devastation, the range of the longleaf still extends from Virginia to Texas. Through the combined efforts of organizations such as the USDA Forest Service, the Longleaf Alliance, and the Nature Conservancy, extensive programs to conserve, restore, and manage the ecosystem are currently underway. The longleaf pine ecosystem is valued not only for its aesthetic appeal, but also for its outstanding biodiversity, habitat value, and for the quality of the longleaf pine lumber. It has a natural resistance to fire and insects, and supports more than thirty threatened or endangered plant and animal species, including the red-cockaded woodpecker and the gopher tortoise. The Longleaf Pine Ecosystem unites a wealth of current information on the ecology, silviculture, and restoration of this ecosystem. The book also includes a discussion of the significant historical, social, and political aspects of ecosystem management, making it a valuable resource for students, land managers, ecologists, private landowners, government agencies, consultants, and the forest products industry. About the Editors: Dr. Shibu Jose is Associate Professor of Forest Ecology and Dr. Eric J. Jokela is Professor of Silviculture at the School of Forest Resources and Conservation at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Dr. Deborah L. Miller is Associate Professor of Wildlife Ecology in the Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation at the University of Florida in Milton.

Download or read book Multivariate Statistics for Wildlife and Ecology Research written by Kevin McGarigal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its focus on the practical application of the techniques of multivariate statistics, this book shapes the powerful tools of statistics for the specific needs of ecologists and makes statistics more applicable to their course of study. It gives readers a solid conceptual understanding of the role of multivariate statistics in ecological applications and the relationships among various techniques, while avoiding detailed mathematics and the underlying theory. More importantly, the reader will gain insight into the type of research questions best handled by each technique and the important considerations in applying them. Whether used as a textbook for specialised courses or as a supplement to general statistics texts, the book emphasises those techniques that students of ecology and natural resources most need to understand and employ in their research. While targeted for upper-division and graduate students in wildlife biology, forestry, and ecology, and for professional wildlife scientists and natural resource managers, this book will also be valuable to researchers in any of the biological sciences.

Download or read book Adventures of a Frontier Naturalist written by Jerry Bryan Lincecum and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-five years ago, Jerry B. Lincecum, Edward H. Phillips, and Peggy A. Redshaw published Adventures of a Frontier Naturalist. Collated from four overlapping memoirs, some not previously published, Gideon Lincecum’s account of his life as Indian trader, physician, and naturalist is lively and full of insight. Lincecum’s experiences of following the frontier in the early 1800s, all the way from Georgia to Texas, were not so unusual in themselves, but the intellect and wit that inform his memoirs make them unique. His scientific articles and collections of specimens, his correspondence with leading scientists of the time, and his six years among the colony of ex-Confederates in Tuxpan, Mexico, offer a first-hand perspective on that age. Lincecum portrays many aspects of frontier social life, including marriage and divorce, slavery, education, religion, the social life of the Choctaws and Chikasaws, medical controversies, and the building of towns. He vividly describes the unspoiled flora and fauna of Texas in 1835 and tells tales of hunting deer, bear, turkey, and waterfowl. This anniversary edition includes a new foreword by Jerry B. Lincecum and Peggy A. Redshaw, offering their insights into the relevance of Gideon Lincecum’s writings today.
