Book A First Course In French

Download or read book A First Course In French written by Charles Alfred Downer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Course In French This book is designed for beginners. It is not merely an exposition of the grammar – it attempts to teach the spoken and the written language. It combines the direct method with the grammar method and aims to impart whatever ease of expression may result from the use of the direct method with the thoroughness and mental training derived from the use of the grammar method. It is so arranged as to be fitted for the students of both junior high schools and senior high schools; it is believed that the simplicity of the book will appeal to students in all beginners' classes - all beginners need to learn about the same elementary facts and vocabulary. Simplicity, practicality, and repetition are its outstanding features. Unimportant points and exceptions have been omitted with the aim of avoiding the mass of detail so confusing to beginners. Efforts have been made to stimulate the student's interest by the following devices: (1) the book is profusely illustrated; (2) the French exercise in each lesson consists of a connected paragraph, based on the picture of that lesson (when one is given); (3) the French exercises of the first thirty-three lessons take up home and school topics, while those of the remaining lessons describe successive incidents of a trip to Paris. Thus the vocabulary is that of everyday life, and, incidentally, it is such as would be needed by anyone visiting France. Book A Vos Marques

Download or read book A Vos Marques written by Alison Andrews and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-01-23 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Vos Marques! is an introductory course for students taking French as an option alongside their main degree course. It has been developed specifically for false beginners: students who have a slight acquaintance with the language. The course comprises a student's book, teacher's book and 180 minutes of audio (available for free download at http://www.routledge.com/books/details/9780415157285/ ) and, through fifteen chapters, follows the progress of an English-speaking student studying in Paris, whose achievements are designed to reflect those of the course user. Special features include: * activities involving pair and group work * an aid to self-assessment at the end of each chapter * hints on vocabulary learning * clear and accessible layout including integrated cartoons. The guidance offered by the teachers book is of particular importance, as lower-level classes in universities are often taught by native-speaking lecturers with little or no teaching training or experience.

Book A Short Course in Reading French

Download or read book A Short Course in Reading French written by Celia Brickman and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2012-12-04 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook teaches the basics of French grammar, reinforcing its lessons with exercises and key practice translations. A systematic guide, the volume is a critical companion for university-level students learning to read and translate written French into English; for graduate scholars learning to do research in French or prepping for proficiency exams; and for any interested readers who want to improve their facility with the French language. In addition, A Short Course in Reading French exposes readers to a broad range of French texts from the humanities and social sciences, including writings by distinguished francophone authors from around the world. The book begins with French pronunciation and cognates and moves through nouns, articles, and prepositions; verbs, adjectives, and adverbs; a graduated presentation of all the indicative and subjunctive tenses; object, relative, and other pronouns; the passive voice; common idiomatic constructions; and other fundamental building blocks of the French language. Chapters contain translation passages from such authors as Pascal, Montesquieu, Proust, Sartre, Bourdieu, Senghor, Césaire, de Certeau, de Beauvoir, Barthes, and Kristeva. Drawn from more than two decades of experience teaching French to students from academic and nonacademic backgrounds, Celia Brickman's clear, accessible, and time-tested format enables even beginners to develop a sophisticated grasp of the language and become adept readers of French. There is an answer key for translation exercises and for non-copyrighted translation passages available to professors and teachers who have assigned this title in a class. Please provide your name, title, institution, and number of students in the course in an email to [email protected].
