Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Book of English Literature This little book is not a mere abridgment of any History or Histories of the subject which the author has already written. He has endeavoured to utilise in it, not merely the experience thus gained, and the reading of more than half a century, but also the knowledge, of what is likely to be required by its possible users, furnished by practice long ago as a schoolmaster both in England and in Scotland, and more recently as a Professor of the matter and an Examiner in many different Universities. Download or read book A First Book in English Classic Reprint written by Alfred Allan Kern and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Book in English The present volume is based upon the belief that gram mar, composition, and literature are not three separate and distinct subjects, but merely three inter-related divisions Of the same subject - English. If this be so, they should not be studied separately but together; only in this way can their true relation be brought out. Teachers of the classics and the romance languages, as well as teachers Of English, are unanimous in their Opinion that the greatest hindrance to the effective teaching Of language at the present time is the student's ignorance Of English grammar. We have, therefore, placed the section on grammar first instead of last, and have sought to make it fill a place between the brief review Of grammar that is occasionally appended to books on composition and the more complete treatises on the subject. As a further aid to the study Of grammar in other languages and in keeping with the recommendation Of the National Education AS Sociation, Universal Nomenclature has been used. Book Talks on Writing English

Download or read book Talks on Writing English written by Arlo Bates and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Talks on Writing English: First Series These talks were given in the autumn of 1894 as a course on Advanced English Composition in the Lowell Free Classes, and that they are now printed is largely due to the fact that they were so well received by those who then heard them. In preparing them, I consulted whatever books upon composition came to my hand. I examined some with profit, some with pleasure, and some, it must be confessed, not wholly without amusement, or even impatience. Doubtless, I owe something to many of these books; but I am not conscious of much obligation to any save the "Principles of Rhetoric," by Professor A. S. Hill, "English Composition," by Professor Barrett Wendell, and "English Prose," by Professor John Earle. I have conscientiously endeavored to make the lectures as practical as possible, stating as clearly as I could those things which would have been most helpful to me had I read and heeded them twenty years ago. Book On the Writing of English Classic Reprint

Download or read book On the Writing of English Classic Reprint written by George Townsend Warner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seldom does one come across a work as simple yet immensely helpful as On the Writing of English by George Townsend Warner. Written with an earnest appeal to students of the English language, Warner provides the pillars of essay writing in the most easy to understand manner in this book. In the introduction itself he sets the tone for the subsequent pages with a heartfelt appeal to all for following the basic tenets of writing properly. On the Writing of English is divided into multiple chapters, each dealing with a particular aspect of creating the perfect essay. The book contains notes on style of writing, gathering material, proper grammar as well as sentence construction among many other issues that go into writing well. Warner breaks up the art of essay writing into various sections and deals with each one at a time. These include the pointers to keep in mind while developing the essay, the pitfalls to be wary of as well as merits and the art of choosing the right phrases and words for optimum impact. The work also contains an appendix of different writing styles as templates for readers to follow. On the Writing of English is useful to the general reader as much as it is to students of the language. It contains within it certain directives as well as well thought out and highly intuitive interventions to improve the quality of prose. Warner's ability to highlight the many pitfalls and common traps of writing an essay are particularly enlightening. This title is a worthy reference handbook for anyone who wishes to improve their writing abilities. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study and Practice, of Writing English IN several years of experience in teaching college students how to write, the authors have found that most of the available text books either gave ah amount of material confusing to the student, or explained matters in such great detail that the instructor was rendered superfluous or else was reduced to the status of a quiz master. In attempting to avoid the faults of ill-arrangement and of overelaboration, the writers of The Study and Practice have had the following purposes in mind. Book The Art of Writing English

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Writing English: A Book for College Classes This book is the outgrowth of two convictions. The first of these is that greater emphasis ought to be placed upon the fact that writing is not merely self-expression, but communication; in other words, that composition must be regarded chie y as a double-ended process in which the writer is successful only when he has produced the desired effect upon his audience. The second is that this communication through writing is an art, and must be studied very much as other arts are studied. Book excerpt: The Writing & Rhetoric series method employs fluent reading, careful listening, models for imitation, and progressive steps. It assumes that students learn the best by reading excellent, whole-story examples of litereature and by growing their skills through imitatiion. Each excercise is intended to impart a skill (or tool) that can be employed in all kids of writing and speaking. The excercises are arranged from simple to more complex. What's more, the exercises are cumulative, meaning that later exercises incorporate the skills acquired preceding exercises. This series is a step-by-step apprenticeship in the art of writing and rhetoric. Fable, the first book in the Writing & Rhetoric series, teaches students the practice of close reading and comprehension, summarizing a story aloud and in writing, and amplification of a story through description and dialogue. Students learn how to identify different kinds of stories; determine the beginning, middle, and end of stories; recognize point of view; and see analogous situations, among other essential tools. The Writing & Rhetoric series recovers a proven method of teaching writing, using fables to teach beginning writers the craft of writing well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Writing of English To this plan I have kept fairly close; but the whole substance of my essay has been modified by the conclu sions arrived at in working it out. In dealing with the writing of English it is the prac tical aspect of the question that strikes one first. The scandalous incapacity of the English boy to write clear English carries with it such obvious disabilities that we look at once for a practical remedy. Chapter I (together with other parts of the book) is intended to bring home the bare facts to those head masters, Governing Bodies of Schools, and public authorities generally who still ignore them, and to help in the fight for the introduction of English into the curriculum of our Secondary Schools for boys. Book The Mechanics of Writing Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Mechanics of Writing Classic Reprint written by Edwin Campbell Woolley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mechanics of Writing In order to write English in a way that befits an educated person, one must know a certain body of rules. The term rules is here used in a wide sense, including not only general precepts, such as the dictum that in a sentence "every part should be subservient to one principal affirmation," but also those numerous particular precepts which refuse to merge themselves into convenient generalizations - for instance, those to the effect that it is bad English to say "I devote my evenings in study" for "I devote my evenings to study," that the verb except should not be used in the sense of accept, nor the noun principle in the sense of the adjective principal, and that all right should be written as two words, the first spelled with two l's. When I say that one must know these rules, I mean that one must not merely be acquainted with them, but habitually observe them. Some of these rules are known and followed by nearly every person who has grown up in an English-speaking community. Nearly every such person knows, for example, the correct meaning of several hundred English words (that is to say, he knows several hundred rules directing how these words should be used); knows how to spell certain words, fewer than those which he knows how to use; and knows that the pronoun I and such nouns as John, Mary, Smith, and Jones should be capitalized. But ignorance of many other rules - which might easily be enumerated if there were any need - is shared by children in the grammar school, boys and girls in high school, high-school graduates of recent and of long standing, college freshmen, college seniors, bachelors and masters of arts, and members of the learned professions. Book A First Book in English for High Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book A First Book in English for High Schools Classic Reprint written by A. L. Murray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Book in English for High Schools One of the reasons for the publication of A first book IN english is the belief On the part of the authors and the publishers that a better text of this kind is needed one that is thoroughly adapted to use in the majority of American high schools. To write such a book has been the purpose of the authors, who have brought to the work years of classroom experience in the teaching of English composition to pupils of the junior and the senior high school ages. Principles. Throughout the first book IN english the authors have kept clearly in mind the fundamental problems of English com position: (i) The problem of something to speak or write about; (2) the problems of gathering, evaluating, and organizing material; (3) the problems of expressing thoughts correctly, clearly, sincerely, and pleasingly; and (4) the problem of adapting what is spoken or written to a definite audience or to a definite body of readers. An ex amination of the lessons in this book will Show that these fundamentals have been made basic considerations. Nowhere in the book is there a discussion of the principles of unity, coherence, and emphasis as such. At the same time, the habit of ex pressing unified thoughts coherently and with emphasis is fixed through practice. The pupil learns to present unified, coherent, well-emphasized thoughts by learning through practice to express thoughts that he has first carefully selected, organized, and evaluated. The young pupil should not be confused with abstractions. He must learn by doing. Throughout the book the developing interests and abilities of boys and girls are carefully gauged and considered.
