Book A Systematic Catalogue of the Zygaenidae

Download or read book A Systematic Catalogue of the Zygaenidae written by Hoffmann and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-10-09 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work reflects modern concepts of systematics at the generic, specific and subspecific levels and aims to update the now outdated catalogue by Reiss & Tremewan (1967), and to bring stability into the nomenclature. The author, date and literature reference of each nominal taxon are cited, together with full synonymies. Type localities of taxa at species and subspecies levels are provided, as well as the range of each species and the distribution of each subspecies. Larval host-plants are listed under each zygaenid species (and vice-versa) and are also indexed by family and species. Literature references are annotated with the same key-words that were used in the Bibliography, to which the Catalogue is a companion and to which this work also contains an updating supplement. It concludes with an index of valid nominal taxa and their synoyms.

Book Butterfly Biology Systems

Download or read book Butterfly Biology Systems written by Roger L.H. Dennis and published by CABI. This book was released on 2020-10-07 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Butterfly Biology Systems Roger Dennis explores key topics and contentious issues in butterfly biology, specifically those in life history and behaviour. Uniquely, using a systems approach, the book focuses on the degree of integration and feedback between components and elements affecting each issue, as well as the links between different issues. The book comprises four sections. The first two sections introduce the reader to principles and approaches for investigating complex relationships, and provide a platform of knowledge on butterfly biology. The final two sections deal in turn with life history and behaviour, covering key issues affecting different stages of development from eggs to adults.

Download or read book Large White Butterfly written by J. Feltwell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1982 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature is still one of our biggest frustrations to-day. There is, in one sense, too much of it, and in another not enough - for there are insufficient and inadequate published guidelines through this jungle. Last year two excellent books for students of ecological chemistry were published, one in France and one in England. The concordance of the references was a mere overall 3% rising to 7% in the chapters on pheromones. Even in the computer age, the channel remains a formidable barrier to the rapid exchange of biological information. At the present time we are in urgent need of compilations similar to John Feltwell's "The Large White Butterfly"; since the literature has become virtually unmanageable. This insect is now a demonstration object in the sixth form schoolroom; an experimental "rabbit" in the University laboratory; a test animal in virus and bacterial research projects; a tool for the study of flight mechanisms, migration, plant biochemistry, hormones, genetics, allergies, pigments, mimicry, etc. , etc. John Feltwell has, by this massive compilation, rendered us a great service - in fact he has given us a present of 4,000 hours of library time spent in 50 different libraries in seven countries. In the process he has collected 8000 references to the Large White. Of these, 4000 have been selected, and we are given a brief indication of their contents.

Book Biogeography and Ecology of the Pityusic Islands

Download or read book Biogeography and Ecology of the Pityusic Islands written by K. Kuhbièr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 701 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large part of this book is dedicated to the geology of the Pityusic Archipelago, followed by contributions on climate and geography. Funguses, mosses and leeks are the subjects of taxonomical botany, and a further paper deals with the vegetation of the islands. Another large part of this book is concerned with zoology: faunal lists on fleas, bees, wasps, ants, butterflies, beetles, snails, amphibians and reptiles, birds and mammals, the latter with their epi- and endofaunas as well as their subfossil remains are presented in 13 different papers. Three of them deal with the special problems of isolation and evolution of new races on rocks and small islets: tenebrionid beetles, lizards and terrestrial snails. Man, as an important factor in the Pityusic Islands, is dealt with in six contributions: prehistory, which means pre-Phoenician and which is treated for the first time, folk architecture, the 'endemic' dialect of the Catalonian language, exploitation of some natural resources and finally the problems of inbreeding and related matters on Formentera. The book closes with an outlook on the present state of the Pityusic nature and tries to show ways of conserving all important parts of the archipelago, so that 'our' two islands may preserve some of their typical vegetation, plants and animals and, thus, of their character.

Book The Distribution Atlas of European Butterflies

Download or read book The Distribution Atlas of European Butterflies written by Otakar Kudrna and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a very short time - only about six years since the Mapping European Butterflies project was announced or some seven years since the preparations were started - the results in the form of The Distribution Atlas of European Butterflies can now be presented to the public. The database of the Atlas consists of 228,931 data records provided by 250 recorders from all over Europe or extracted from all the major national, regional and private data banks. The Atlas contains about 450 dot distribution maps of all the European butterflies. For the first time ever a distribution atlas of European butterflies will be available and at the same time Europe will be the first continent ever to have all its butterfly species plotted on precise and comprehensive distribution maps. Apart from providing significant species specific chronological data for taxonomists and biogeographers, the prime purpose of the Atlas is to aid and promote the conservation of European butterflies. The analysis and evaluation of the distribution data contained in the Atlas will facilitate the identification of priorities in selecting species and areas for European significance for convervation purposes. Thus, The Distribution Atlas of European Butterflies constitutes a major contribution towards the advancement of our knowledge of European butterflies.
