Book Giant Clam Tridacna Maxima from Lakshadweep Archipelago India

Download or read book Giant Clam Tridacna Maxima from Lakshadweep Archipelago India written by Deepak Apte and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giant Clams, as they are popularly known, are among the most specialized and the largest living bivalves. One of the species of Giant Clam, Tridacna gigas is known to grow over a meter in length. They have a narrow range of distribution and occur exclusively within tropical reefs under the Indo-Pacific faunal region. Giant Clam populations worldover have plummeted with many species facing threat of extinction due to unregulated harvesting for food, souvenirs and habitat destruction. Since last few decades, however, many efforts are being made worldwide to reintroduce them through mariculture. Despite these efforts, Giant Clam populations continue to decline globally. In India, Giant Clams occur only in Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar reefs. Three species of Giant Clam are protected in India under Schedule-I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, receiving the highest degree of legal protection any species can enjoy. The present study is the first in the Indian Sub-continent to understand the population ecology, status and conservation needs of Tridacna maxima and formed basis for developing Giant Clam species recovery plan for the Government of India.

Book Restocking and Stock Enhancement of Marine Invertebrate Fisheries

Download or read book Restocking and Stock Enhancement of Marine Invertebrate Fisheries written by Johann D. Bell and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-12-07 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Many of the world's fisheries are in trouble - they no longer yield the catches, and potential profits, they once did. The habitats that support fisheries have been damaged by pollution and other irresponsible use of coastal land. Destructive fishing methods like trawling and blast fishing have also changed fish habitats resulting in support of fewer fish. The authors draw on more than 1000 scientific papers covering 11 groups/species of marine invertebrates. From this large literature, they distill 20 lessons for assessing and guiding the use of restocking and stock enhancement in the management of invertebrate fisheries. · Written by 7 expert authors · Covers 11 groups/species of marine invertebrates · Reviews over 1000 scientific papers · Identifies 20 lessons that can be learned from past restocking and stock enhancement initiatives · Proposes a new approach to assess the potential value of hatchery releases to complement other forms of management · Assesses progress of disciple against the blueprint for a responsible approach.

Book The Global Monsoon System

Download or read book The Global Monsoon System written by Chih-Pei Chang and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a current review of the science of monsoon research and forecasting. The contents are based on the invited reviews presented at the World Meteorological Organization''s Fourth International Workshop on Monsoons in late 2008, with subsequent manuscripts revised from 2009 to early 2010. The book builds on the concept that the monsoons in various parts of the globe can be viewed as components of an integrated global monsoon system, while emphasizing that significant region-specific characteristics are present in individual monsoon regions. The topics covered include all major monsoon regions and time scales (mesoscale, synoptic, intraseasonal, interannual, decadal, and climate change). It is intended to provide an updated comprehensive review of the current status of knowledge, modeling capability, and future directions in the research of monsoon systems around the world.

Book Oceanography and Marine Biology

Download or read book Oceanography and Marine Biology written by S. J. Hawkins and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever-increasing interest in oceanography and marine biology and their relevance to global environmental issues create a demand for authoritative reviews summarizing the results of recent research. Oceanography and Marine Biology: An Annual Review has catered to this demand since its founding by the late Harold Barnes more than 50 years ago. Its objectives are to consider, annually, the basic areas of marine research, returning to them when appropriate in future volumes; to deal with subjects of special and topical importance; and to add new subjects as they arise. The favourable reception and complimentary reviews accorded to all the volumes shows that the series is fulfilling a very real need. Volume 55 follows closely the objectives and style of the earlier volumes, continuing to regard the marine sciences—with all their various aspects—as a unity. Physical, chemical, and biological aspects of marine science are dealt with by experts actively engaged in these fields, and every chapter is peer-reviewed by other experts working actively in the specific areas of interest. Chapters 3, 4, 5, and 6 of this book are freely available as downloadable Open Access PDFs at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.
