Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An insightful and essential new survey of Wyeth's entire career, situating the milestones of his art within the trajectory of 20th-century American life This major retrospective catalogue explores the impact of time and place on the work of beloved American painter Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009). While previous publications have mainly analyzed Wyeth's work thematically, this publication places him fully in the context of the long 20th century, tracing his creative development from World War I through the new millennium. Published to coincide with the centenary of Wyeth's birth, the book looks at four major chronological periods in the artist's career: Wyeth as a product of the interwar years, when he started to form his own "war memories" through military props and documentary photography he discovered in his father's art studio; the change from his "theatrical" pictures of the 1940s to his own visceral responses to the landscape around Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and his family's home in Mai≠ his sudden turn, in 1968, into the realm of erotic art, including a completely new assessment of Wyeth's "Helga pictures"--a series of secret, nude depictions of his neighbor Helga Testorf--within his career as a who≤ and his late, self-reflective works, which includes the discussion of his previously unknown painting entitled Goodbye, now believed to be Wyeth's last work.

Book Innocence Heterosexuality and the Queerness of Children s Literature

Download or read book Innocence Heterosexuality and the Queerness of Children s Literature written by Tison Pugh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-12-14 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innocence, Heterosexuality, and the Queerness of Children’s Literature examines distinguished classics of children’s literature both old and new—including L. Frank Baum’s Oz books, Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House series, J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, and Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series—to explore the queer tensions between innocence and heterosexuality within their pages. Pugh argues that children cannot retain their innocence of sexuality while learning about normative heterosexuality, yet this inherent paradox runs throughout many classic narratives of literature for young readers. Children’s literature typically endorses heterosexuality through its invisible presence as the de facto sexual identity of countless protagonists and their families, yet heterosexuality’s ubiquity is counterbalanced by its occlusion when authors shield their readers from forthright considerations of one of humanity’s most basic and primal instincts. The book demonstrates that tensions between innocence and sexuality render much of children’s literature queer, especially when these texts disavow sexuality through celebrations of innocence. In this original study, Pugh develops interpretations of sexuality that few critics have yet ventured, paving the way for future scholarly engagement with larger questions about the ideological role of children's literature and representations of children's sexuality. Tison Pugh is Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of Central Florida. He is the author of Queering Medieval Genres and Sexuality and Its Queer Discontents in Middle English Literature and has published on children’s literature in such journals as Children’s Literature, The Lion and the Unicorn, and Marvels and Tales.

Book 40 A Doonesbury Retrospective 1970 to 1979

Download or read book 40 A Doonesbury Retrospective 1970 to 1979 written by G. B. Trudeau and published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. This book was released on 2012-06-12 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of this retrospective anthology covers the Pulitzer prize-winning cartoon strip from its first appearance in 1970 to 1979. On October 26, 1970, G.B. Trudeau introduced the world to a college jock named B.D. and his inept and geeky roommate, Mike Doonesbury. Fourteen thousand strips later, Doonesbury has become one of the most beloved and acclaimed comic strips in history. Over the years, the world of Doonesbury grew uniquely vast, sustained by an intricately woven web of relationships—over forty major characters spanning three generations. The complete 40: A Doonesbury Anthology presents more than 1,800 comic strips that chart key adventures and cast connections over the last four decades. Dropped in throughout this rolling narrative are twenty detailed essays in which Trudeau contemplates his characters, including portraits of core characters such as Duke and Honey, Zonker, Joanie, and Rev. Sloan, as well as more recent additions, such as Zipper, Alex, and Toggle. Trudeau also includes an annotated diagram that maps the mind-boggling matrix of character relationships. This first volume of the four-volume e-book edition of 40 covers the years 1970 to 1979 for the celebrated cartoon strip.
