Book Seduced and Betrayed

Download or read book Seduced and Betrayed written by Milford Bateman and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microfinance began as the disbursement of tiny loans to the poor, which they could use to undertake informal income-generating activities. It went on to become one of the most popular international development policies of all time and a mainstay of local development and antipoverty programs across the Global South. The contributors to this multidisciplinary volume consider the origins, evolution, and outcomes of microfinance from a variety of perspectives and contend that it has been an unsuccessful approach to development. The contributors contend that over the last twenty years, microfinance policies have exacerbated poverty and exclusion, undermined gender empowerment, underpinned a massive growth in inequality, destroyed solidarity and trust in the community, and, overall, manifestly weakened those local economies of the Global South where it reached critical mass. They use qualitative anthropological, economic, and political-economic research to unpack the ideas and values that have allowed microfinance to “seduce” the world and blind so many to its corrosive effects.

Book excerpt: Without our realising it, a single, slippery concept has become a secular deity throughout the modern industrial world. We make terrible sacrifices in its name: of our money, our health, and our planet. That deity is nature itself. From supermarket shoppers to evolutionary biologists, from atheists to pastors, from Alex Jones to Gwyneth Paltrow, we are all prone to the intuitive faith that life should be lived 'naturally'.But nature can't teach us how to live. If we try to stick to its imagined commands, eschewing human artifice in pursuit of Edenic purity, we jeopardise the environment, our health, and our society. (We also waste a lot of money on pots of weird slime). It is time to accept our profound responsibility to shape the world of which our technology and our selves are wholly a part.

Book The Fallacy in the Promise

Download or read book The Fallacy in the Promise written by Jabari Gravy and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 1097 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking his readers through a grueling, eighteen-year-long psycho-legal odyssey, Jabari Gravy recounts the failures of our legal justice system, from legal training to jurisprudence. He also offers a breathtaking portrayal of borderline personality disorder through his relationship with his wife. His story reveals the legal scandal of their divorce and the exploitation of mental illness by his wife and a state court system. In stunning detail, Gravy dissects, exposes, and gives a definitive and vividly dramatic account of furtive judicial abuse of authority, painting a disturbing tableau of what actually happens in our courtrooms: their underlying design, organizational values, and daily operationsillustrating how the clandestine and undocumented come to deny directly and categorically the compelling public court record. Through a revealing window on how innocent people are railroaded to injustice with loss of livelihood, liberty, and life, he inextricably entwines the African-American experience with his other material, demonstrates the ominous secret cracks in our justice system, unveils a monolithic legal culture represented by gladiatorial back-scratching court functionaries who marginalize non-dominate cultures and inflict real casualtiesboth at the micro level, on the lives of ordinary people, and at the national level as our democracy is secretively eroded. Gravy concludes that pretty paper is not justice, and demands change.
