Download or read book The Spirit of Lawsonia written by Steve Dick and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-03 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Golf Courses of Lawsonia The Links Opened for play in May, 1930, the Links course remains unique to date. Designed by William Langford, the course is arranged in the Scottish golf links tradition. Elevated greens, unusually severe bunkers, and open rolling terrain still create great difficulty. According to legend, a boxcar is buried beneath the seventh green providing its extraordinary elevation. Year after year, decade after decade, the Links layout has essentially reserved a spot on lists of the nation's top 100 public courses in national golf publications. The Woodlands Opened in 1983 as a beautiful, wooded 9-hole course designed by Rocky Roquemore. The holes meander through maples, pines and aspens. Eight years later the second nine was opened to complement the original nine to seamlessly form the 6618-yard Woodlands course. Is there a Spirit of Lawsonia? The author looks at the courses of Lawsonia through the eyes of a weekend player, while experiencing personal and spiritual development after a long absence from the golf course where he learned to play the game.

Download or read book How Much Inequality Is Fair written by Venkat Venkatasubramanian and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-08 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many in the United States feel that the nation’s current level of economic inequality is unfair and that capitalism is not working for 90% of the population. Yet some inequality is inevitable. The question is: What level of inequality is fair? Mainstream economics has offered little guidance on fairness and the ideal distribution of income. Political philosophy, meanwhile, has much to say about fairness yet relies on qualitative theories that cannot be verified by empirical data. To address inequality, we need to know what the goal is—and for this, we need a quantitative, testable theory of fairness for free-market capitalism. How Much Inequality Is Fair? synthesizes concepts from economics, political philosophy, game theory, information theory, statistical mechanics, and systems engineering into a mathematical framework for a fair free-market society. The key to this framework is the insight that maximizing fairness means maximizing entropy, which makes it possible to determine the fairest possible level of pay inequality. The framework therefore provides a moral justification for capitalism in mathematical terms. Venkat Venkatasubramanian also compares his theory’s predictions to actual inequality data from various countries—showing, for instance, that Scandinavia has near-ideal fairness, while the United States is markedly unfair—and discusses the theory’s implications for tax policy, social programs, and executive compensation.

Book excerpt: In golf, nowhere is the mental strain more apparent that at the closing stages of a major championship. The crowd, absorbed in every shot, conveys the tension to the players, who are also involved in another contest - the mind game. Before missing the most notorious putt in the history of the Open Championship, Doug Sanders was already thinking of which side of the gallery he would turn to first to acknowledge the applause. When he missed a three foot putt that would have won him the old silver claret jug, there was no applause. Instead people reacted as if they had just witnessed a terrible accident - which, in a sporting context they had. It was Jack Nicklaus, rather than Sanders, who went for the jugular and, in the process, took possession of the jug. The line between victor and victim can be measured not only in millions of dollars but also in fractions of inches. `One minute you're on cloud nine, ' Sam Snead remarked
Download or read book Golf written by Bill Kroen and published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "If you watch a game, it's fun. If you play it, it's recreation. If you work at it, it's golf." --Bob Hope This is an easy to read and understand instructional book to help adult players sharpen their skills. Although most golfers never improve once they reach adulthood, author Bill Kroen wants to help those golfers get past that and take their game to a new level. Readers will learn how to really learn the game (not just how to swing), they'll gain a greater sense of awareness of the total golf experience, and they will finally learn how to take their practice game to the golf course. Drawing on his background in psychology, Kroen directs his readers to envision the results they want. Then they can put what they read into practice without the confusion caused by most instructional books. Golf: How Good Do You Want to Be? offers a blueprint for resourceful practice and practical application with chapters including "The Mental Connection," "The Art of Practice," "Thinking Your Way Around the Course," and "Scoring Well."
