It has been further obscured by the fact that there are no external evidences of the organism in the field, it being detected only on the dead vines in the field or on the roots in the storage house a month or more after the cr0p is harvested. In view of these facts, injury which has been occasioned by the dry-rot organism is frequently attributed to other diseases, such as stem-rot or even to drying up due to natural causes. Furthermore, it has become a staple food product in the average American home. The sweet potato is a typical truck crop, thriving best in light sandy loams. With this in mind, its future is unlimited. Texas alone possesses enough typical land to grow sweet potatoes for the entire population Of the United States. Moreover, many of the southern states such as Alabama, Georgia and others can produce sweet potatoes sufficient to feed the entire world. With this crop rapidly coming into prominence and as knowledge of sweet potato storage increases, thereby reducing the losses from rotting, the day is not far distant when we will be in a position to export and to ship sweet potatoes to many of the European and Asiatic countries where this crop cannot be profitably grown on account of difierence in soil or climatic con ditions. The present great drawback to the more ex tensive production Of sweet potatoes is its highly perishable nature, both in the field and in storage. It has been estimated by the Plant Disease Survey of the United States Department of Agriculture that in 1917 the loss from the more important sweet potato diseases was per cent Of the total crop, or a net waste Of bushels. The task has been a formidable one. I have always had a great respect professionally for Dr. Cynthia Westcott. That respect has grown considerably with the completion of the two editions. I now fully realize the tremendous amount of effort expended by Dr. Westcott in developing the Handbook. A book such as this is never finished, since one is never sure that everything has been included that should be. I would quote and endorse the words of Dr. Westcott in her preface to the first edition: "It is easy enough to start a book on plant disease. It is impossible to finish it. " This revision of the Handbook retains the same general format contained in the previous editions. By 2050, the population is expected to exceed 9 billion. It has been estimated that some 15% of food production is lost to plant diseases; in developing countries losses may be much higher. Historically, plant diseases have had catastrophic impact on food production. For example: potato blight caused the Irish famine in 1845; brown spot of rice caused the Great Bengal Famine of 1943; southern corn leaf blight caused a devastating epidemic on the US corn crop in 1970. Food security is threatened by an ongoing sequence of plant diseases, some persistent for decades or centuries, others more opportunistic. Wheat blast and banana xanthomonas wilt are two contrasting examples of many that currently threaten food production. Other emerging diseases will follow. The proposed title aims to provide a synthesis of expert knowledge to address this central challenge to food security for the 21st century.
