Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A Discourse on the Evils of Dancing' is a thought-provoking sermon by John F. Mesick that challenges the belief that dancing is a harmless pastime. He argues that dancing can lead to immoral behavior and sinful thoughts, which can be detrimental to one's spiritual health. Using biblical references and historical examples, Mesick provides a compelling case against dancing and encourages his listeners to resist the temptation to engage in this sinful activity.

Download or read book Adversaries of Dance written by Ann Louise Wagner and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether in the private parlor, public hall, commercial "dance palace," or sleazy dive, dance has long been opposed by those who viewed it as immoral--more precisely as being a danger to the purity of those who practiced it, particularly women. In Adversaries of Dance, Ann Wagner presents a major study of opposition to dance over a period of four centuries in what is now the United States. Wagner bases her work on the thesis that the tradition of opposition to dance "derived from white, male, Protestant clergy and evangelists who argued from a narrow and selective interpretation of biblical passages," and that the opposition thrived when denominational dogma held greater power over people's lives and when women's social roles were strictly limited. Central to Wagner's work, which will be welcomed by scholars of both religion and dance, are issues of gender, race, and socioeconomic status. "There are no other works that even begin to approach this definitive accomplishment." --Amanda Porterfield, author of Female Piety in Puritan New England

Book Socialist Fun

  • Author : Gleb Tsipursky
  • Publisher : University of Pittsburgh Press
  • Release : 2016-09-03
  • ISBN : 0822981254

Download or read book Socialist Fun written by Gleb Tsipursky and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2016-09-03 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most narratives depict Soviet Cold War cultural activities and youth groups as drab and dreary, militant and politicized. In this study Gleb Tsipursky challenges these stereotypes in a revealing portrayal of Soviet youth and state-sponsored popular culture. The primary local venues for Soviet culture were the tens of thousands of clubs where young people found entertainment, leisure, social life, and romance. Here sports, dance, film, theater, music, lectures, and political meetings became vehicles to disseminate a socialist version of modernity. The Soviet way of life was dutifully presented and perceived as the most progressive and advanced, in an attempt to stave off Western influences. In effect, socialist fun became very serious business. As Tsipursky shows, however, Western culture did infiltrate these activities, particularly at local levels, where participants and organizers deceptively cloaked their offerings to appeal to their own audiences. Thus, Soviet modernity evolved as a complex and multivalent ideological device. Tsipursky provides a fresh and original examination of the Kremlin's paramount effort to shape young lives, consumption, popular culture, and to build an emotional community—all against the backdrop of Cold War struggles to win hearts and minds both at home and abroad.

Book Fashion Heritage

Download or read book Fashion Heritage written by Isabel Cantista and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume explores how fashion brands deal with legacy by looking at the preservation of heritage and knowledge and how this builds a bridge to the future. Bringing together different reflections from the world of fashion, from gloves to virtual jewels, from luxury brand’s digital narratives to historical contexts, each chapter offers a narrative that is contemporary, yet linked to historical contexts. With these narratives, the book reveals how innovation builds on heritage, and how locally rooted traditional techniques connect to contemporary global production. It illustrates how ancestral processes renew, encouraging us to produce and consume more responsibly. Split into three parts, the book firstly covers narrative and knowledge in different contexts before delving in to narrative, brand building and creativity with case studies. The final section centres on digital narratives with new consumers. Ultimately, this book demonstrates that multidisciplinary knowledge of the past is essential to the understanding of the contemporary.

Book The Cultural Politics of Fur

Download or read book The Cultural Politics of Fur written by Julia Emberley and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emberley documents the 1980s confrontations between animal rights activists and native peoples that pitted Lynx, the organization responsible for the high-profile anti-fur ads in Great Britain, against Inuit and Dene societies' claims for a livelihood based on the selling and trading, consumption and production of animal fur. From colonial fur trading to twentieth-century globalization of the fur industry, Emberley analyzes the cultural, political, material, and libidinal values ascribed to fur.
