Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Death of Character is a broad historical, sociological, and cultural inquiry into the moral life and moral education of young Americans based upon a huge empirical study of the children themselves. The children's thoughts and concerns-expressed here in their own words-shed a whole new light on what we can expect from moral education. Targeting new theories of education and the prominence of psychology over moral instruction, Hunter analyzes the making of a new cultural narcissism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse on the Character and Death of John Brown: Delivered in Martinsburgh, N. Y. Dec; 12, 1859 My Discourse on the Character and Death of John Brown was published immediately after its delivery, in compliance with the wishes of a very few radical abolitionists. It was favorably noticed by the New York Independent and some other public journals, by rea son of which I received numerous orders for it from all parts of the Northern States, which soon exhausted the edition. In the summer of 1860 I also received letters from Hon. Gerrit Smith, Rev. Dr. Cheever, and other leading abolitionists, expressing hearty approval of the discourse, after which it slumbered for six years almost as quietly as John Brown's body in the grave. But since the close of the war I have received numerous letters asking for copies of it, for which reason I have had published this second edition. I have taken the liberty of publishing herewith one of the letters above referred to, as also an introduction by my revered friend Dr. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This impressive [anthology] succeeds admirably at demonstrating how the Kierkegaardian corpus presents . . . a philosophy of finite existence” (Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews). Few philosophers have devoted such sustained, almost obsessive attention to the topic of death as Søren Kierkegaard. Kierkegaard and Death brings together new work on Kierkegaard’s multifaceted discussions of death and provides a thorough guide to the development, in various texts and contexts, of Kierkegaard’s ideas concerning death. Essays by an international group of scholars take up essential topics such as dying to the world, living death, immortality, suicide, mortality and subjectivity, death and the meaning of life, remembrance of the dead, and the question of the afterlife. While bringing Kierkegaard’s philosophy of death into focus, this volume connects Kierkegaard with important debates in contemporary philosophy.
