Book Nucleation Rates in the Alpha to Beta Transformation of Tin

Download or read book Nucleation Rates in the Alpha to Beta Transformation of Tin written by and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nucleation rate of the alpha (gray) to beta (white) tin transformation was measured as a function of temperature and alpha tin particle ize by an x-ray diffraction technique. The power specimens of alpha tin were essentially monodisperse and the small dimension of the particles of these specimens was varied from 13 to 75 microns. The fraction isothermall tran formed as a function of time was determined continually from integrate intensity measurements of the 220 x-ra reflection of alpha tin. Inasmuch as the period for propagation of the beta phase is negligi le in such small particles and since there was not internucleation between particles, it was possible to obtain the nucleation rate irectly from the transformation data. Several types of nucleation sites of differing potency were found to be operative in the nucleation process. Analysis of the temperature dependence of rate constants at a given fraction transformed suggests that the active site are regions of higher free energy and not catalytic interfaces. Appreciable induction periods were observed at the lower temperatures of transformation. They may be described in terms of a theory relating to the effect of decreased atomic mobility in delaying the establishment of a steady-state distribution of embryos.

Book Bainite and Martensite

Download or read book Bainite and Martensite written by Carlos Garcia-Mateo and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-05-27 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The microstructures of both martensite and bainite, although sharing some common features, depict a plethora of subtle differences that made them unique when studied in further detail. Tailoring the final properties of a microstructure based on one or the other as well as in combination with others and exploring more sophisticated concepts, such as Q&P and nanostructured bainite, are the topics which are the focus of research around the world. In understanding the key microstructural parameters controlling the final properties as well as definition of adequate process parameters to attain the desired microstructures requires that a proper understanding of the mechanism ruling their transformation and a detailed characterization first be acheived. The development of new and powerful scientific techniques and equipment (EBSD, APT, HRTEM, etc.) allow us to gain fundamental insights that help to establish some of the principles by which those microstructures are known. The developments accompanying such findings lead to further developments and intensive research providing the required metallurgical support.

Book Phase Equilibria Phase Diagrams and Phase Transformations

Download or read book Phase Equilibria Phase Diagrams and Phase Transformations written by Mats Hillert and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-11-22 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational tools allow material scientists to model and analyze increasingly complicated systems to appreciate material behavior. Accurate use and interpretation however, requires a strong understanding of the thermodynamic principles that underpin phase equilibrium, transformation and state. This fully revised and updated edition covers the fundamentals of thermodynamics, with a view to modern computer applications. The theoretical basis of chemical equilibria and chemical changes is covered with an emphasis on the properties of phase diagrams. Starting with the basic principles, discussion moves to systems involving multiple phases. New chapters cover irreversible thermodynamics, extremum principles, and the thermodynamics of surfaces and interfaces. Theoretical descriptions of equilibrium conditions, the state of systems at equilibrium and the changes as equilibrium is reached, are all demonstrated graphically. With illustrative examples - many computer calculated - and worked examples, this textbook is an valuable resource for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in materials science and engineering.

Book Bainite in Steels

Download or read book Bainite in Steels written by H.K.D.H. Bhadeshia and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 914 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third edition of the book, much expanded to include and incorporate important developments in the subject over the last fifteen years. The book represents a comprehensive treatise on all aspects of the bainite transformation, from the choreography of atoms during the phase change to length scales that are typical of engineering applications. The alloy design that emerges from this explains the role of solute additions, and the pernicious effects of impurities such as hydrogen. The picture presented is self-consistent and therefore is able to guide the reader on the exploitation of theory to the design of some of the most exciting steels, including the world’s first bulk nanostructured metal.
