Book A Dictionary of the Characters in the Waverley Novels of Sir Walter Scott Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Dictionary of the Characters in the Waverley Novels of Sir Walter Scott Classic Reprint written by M. F. A. Husband and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dictionary of the Characters in the Waverley Novels of Sir Walter Scott This book is intended as a work of reference for the student and lover of the Waverley Novels, and, in a minor degree, for the humanist who sees in Scott a noble nature worthy of closer acquaintance. Its aim is that of a Dictionary and not an Encyclopaedia - an identification and description, rather than a condensed narrative, of the multitude of characters created by Sir Walter. No fewer than 2836 characters are comprised in the Dictionary, and these include 37 horses and 33 dogs. Some of the historical errors which appear in the Novels have been corrected in the Dictionary: see, for example, the Notes at page 76, col. 2; p. 175, col. 1; p. 229, col. 1, and p. 271, col. 2. Short notes have been inserted as to the prototype of Jeanie Deans (p. 68), and Old Mortality (p. 198); and Scott's acknowledgment of his indebtedness to Mrs. Bethune Baliol in respect of the substratum of his Scottish fictions is reproduced on p. 16. Comparatively few instances occur in which glossary notes are necessary, and these have, for convenience, been shown immediately after the passages in which the necessity for them arises, instead of being collected to form a Glossary separate from the Dictionary. In the table of Novels which precedes the Dictionary proper, no attempt has been made to summarise the respective stories. It is hoped, however, that the chronological and other notes therein contained will prove of service in connection with the study of an author whose writings did much to stimulate that "historical sense" which was one of the richest gains of the human mind in the nineteenth century, and whose wide-ranging genius and sunny sympathies continue to win the affectionate attention and admiration of English-speaking readers throughout the world a hundred years after the preparation of his first Novel. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Waverley Dictionary: An Alphabetical Arrangement of All the Characters in Sir Walter Scott's Waverley Novels, With a Descriptive Analysis of Each Character, and Illustrative Selections From the Text "Up to the era of Sir Walter Scott living people had some vague general, indistinct notions about dead people mouldering away to nothing, centuries ago, in regular kirk-yards and chance burial-places, "Mang muirs and mosses many, O, ' somewhere or other in that difficultly distinguished and very debatable district called the Borders. All at once he touched their tombs with a divining rod, and the turf streamed out ghosts, some in woodmen's dresses, most in warrior's mail; queer archers leaped forth, with yew bows and quivers, and giants stalked, shaking spears! The gray chronicler smiled, and, taking up his pen, wrote in lines of light the annals of the chivalrous and heroic days of auld feudal Scotland. The nation then, for the first time, knew the character of its ancestors; for these were not spectres - not they, indeed nor phantoms of the brain, but gaunt flesh and blood, or glad and glorious; - base-born cottage churls of the olden times, because Scottish, became familiar to the love of the nations heart, and so to its pride did the high-born lineage of palace kings. We know now the character of our own people as it showed itself in war and peace in palace, castle, hall, hut, hovel and shieling - through centuries of advancing civilization, from the time when Edinburgh was yeleped Auld Reekie down to the period when the bright idea first occurred to her inhabitants to call her the Modern Athens." Having hidden the count, Hereward encountered his sweetheart Bertha, who had fol lowed Brenhilda as her attendant, and then oh tained an audience of the imperial family, who were discussing recent events, including a plot in which Brennius was concerned for seizing the throne, and received permission to communicate with the Duke de Bouillon. Bertha volunteered to be his messenger, and, at an interview with the council of Crusaders at Scutari, she induced them to promise that fifty knights, each with ten followers, should attend the combat to support their champion.
