Book excerpt: John Carter's ABC for Book Collectors has long been established as the most enjoyable as well as the most informative reference book on the subject. Here, in over 450 alphabetical entries, ranging in length from a single line to several pages, may be found definition and analysis of the technical terms of book collecting and bibliography, interspersed with salutory comment on such subjects as auctions, condition, facsimiles and fakes, 'points', rarity, etc. This seventh edition, revised and with a new introduction by Nicolas Barker, editor of The Book Collector, incorporates additions and amendments which he has accumulated since the last edition was updated fourteen years ago. Nicolas Barker worked with his friend John Carter revising the ABC up to the latter's death in 1975 and has faithfully preserved the spirit of the original. The ABC thus retains its character as an indispensable guide to book collecting.

Book Abbreviations and Technical Terms Used in Book Catalogs and in Bibliographies

Download or read book Abbreviations and Technical Terms Used in Book Catalogs and in Bibliographies written by Frank Keller Walter and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abbreviations and Technical Terms Used in Book Catalogs and in Bibliographies: Book Catalogs and in Bibliographies This list was begun as an expansion of Miss Mary Medlicott's Abbreviations in Book Catalogues which was issued in 1906 by the Boston Book Company as Bulletin of Bibliography, pamphlet No. 15. It has so far outgrown the limits of the original list as to have become a quite independent production. Special thanks, however, for the original plan and for much of the subject matter of the present list are due to Miss Medlicott's list and to a manuscript List of bibliographical terms and abbreviations compiled in 1906, under the direction of Mr. E. C. Williams, by Miss Eliza Townsend for the use of the Western Reserve Library School. Originality can hardly be claimed for any work so obviously dependent on previous similar attempts nor, although longer than most previous attempts, can any claim to more than approximate completeness be made for this list. Perhaps the chief point of difference from other lists is the greater attention paid to terms and abbreviations frequently used in current catalogues of second-hand booksellers but which, as they describe peculiarities of individual copies, are seldom found in more formal bibliographies. Arbitrary symbols used only in particular works are usually explained in the works themselves and are therefore seldom included here.
