Book The Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu

Download or read book The Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu written by Maurice Joly and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joly's (1831-78) Dialogue aux enfers entre Machiavel et Montesquieu is the major source of one of the world's most infamous and damaging forgeries, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. That, however, was concocted some two decades after he died, and American political scientist Waggoner points to Joly's own text for evidence that he was not anti-semitic and was an intransigent enemy of the kind of tyranny the forgery served during the 1930s. He translates the text and discusses Joly's intentions in writing it and his contribution to the understanding of modern politics. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.

Download or read book Dialogically Speaking written by Kenneth Paul Kramer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes us authentically human? According to Maurice Friedman, world-renowned Martin Buber scholar, translator, and biographer, it is genuine dialogue. "When there's a willingness for dialogue," Friedman says, "then one must 'navigate' moment-by-moment. It's a listening process." Friedman addresses our humanity in ever-unique ways through his dialogue with philosophy, literature, religion, and psychotherapy. At least two things make this book new. Friedman presents his wide-ranging thought directly in five original essays forming an "intertextual compass," which is then elaborated upon by colleagues familiar with his work. Second, a special feature of this book is found at the end of each part which invites readers to engage with questions drawn from and pointing toward Friedman's writing. The book's intended audience includes teachers, scholars, and students interested in dialogical approaches to any of the human sciences. In a time when we are in danger of losing our human birthright, Friedman's interdisciplinary insights point us again to "the touch of the other."

Book The Journal Of Claude Fredericks Volume Three Part Two From Maine to Mexico 1943

This book was released on 2011-10-07 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third volume of The Journal Of Claude Fredericks is his journal for the year 1943, a Wanderjahr that begins with a spring in Cambridge, where Volume Two ended, but with Fredericks, having left studies at Harvard, living now in a room at Maud Bemis’s house on Nutting Road near the Cowley Fathers, seeing various friends from earlier, Brie Taylor, John Simon, Anthony Clark, Paul Doguereau, the George Sartons, and making new friends as well. The summer is spent in a cabin on the shore near Belfast Maine, writing and studying still and coming to know the family that lives on the hill. In September, after spending ten days with Paul Doguereau and Fanny Mason in Walpole New Hampshire on the beautiful Mason estate overlooking the Connecticut and a month in New York living in an apartment on University Place and seeing his friend May Sarton and coming to know Muriel Rukeyser and Julian Beck, he heads with his friend William Quinn to Iowa to live with several friends of theirs who also have left Harvard, in particular Michael Millen and Paul Rail, all of them proclaiming in different ways, as Quinn and Fredericks do in theirs, their objections to America’s part in the war that had begun in December 1941. After two weeks Fredericks leaves to stay with a friend in Chicago, Martha Johnson, and to settle in and write about the troubling events of the previous days and then go on to Missouri, to pay filial pieties to members of his family there and after that go south with his mother to Mexico City for a week and then with her to Acapulco for ten days at Christmas, a spot at that time still undiscovered and with only two small hotels. Finally at the year’s end he heads back east to New York, where he has plans to settle down and live forever, in the city he had always loved the most of any he knew.

Book Augustine and the Dialogue

Download or read book Augustine and the Dialogue written by Erik Kenyon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to the scholarly consensus, Augustine and the Dialogue argues that Augustine's dialogues, with their inconclusive debates and dramatic shifts in focus, betray a sophisticated pedagogical method which combines strategies for 'un-learning' and self-reflection with a willingness to proceed via provisional answers. By shifting the focus from doctrinal content to questions of method, Kenyon seeks to reframe scholarly discussions of Augustine's earliest surviving body of works. This approach shows the young Augustine not refuting so much as appropriating Academic skeptical practices. It also shows that the dialogues' few scriptural references, e.g. Wisdom 11:20's 'measure, number, weight', come at key structural points. This helps articulate the dialogues' larger project of cultivating virtue and their approach to philosophy as a form of purification. Augustine is shown to be at home with pluralistic approaches, and Kenyon holds up his methodology as an attractive model for thinking through problems of the liberal academy today.

Book Understanding the Bible

Download or read book Understanding the Bible written by Bob Dowell and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the Bible: Head and Heart provides readers a forum for more fully comprehending the Bible. Each book of the Bible tells a story that relates to the larger story, and to understand each book's story it is important to understand the larger story, and vice versa. To do so, however, entails a careful reading of the entire Bible, grasping both the fact of the story and the spirit of the story. Understanding the Bible: Head and Heart provides prose summaries for helping the reader to understand and remember the fact of the story, and poetic summaries for helping the reader to experience the story and thereby to more readily ingest its spirit. Since Understanding the Bible: Head and Heart would be a bit lengthy under one cover, it is divided into three parts: Part One addresses The Old Testament, Part Two addresses Matthew through Acts, and Part Three addresses Romans through Revelation. This publication is Part Two. Part Three is forthcoming. Bob Dowell, English professor, retired from the University of Texas-Pan American in 1999 in order to devote full time to a project conceived while teaching his favorite course: "The Bible as Literature." He envisioned developing a forum in which readers could readily engage in a head and heart understanding of the Bible. For a decade he worked on the project all the while piloting his production through a church sponsored bible study: "Back to the Bible with Dr. Bob." The success of that study spoke convincingly to the efficacy of publishing the materials for purposes of reaching a wider audience. Thus, Dr. Bob's vision becomes a reality in the publication of Understanding the Bible: Head and Heart. Fittingly, his first publication as a professor is an article in College English (1965) entitled "The Moment of Grace in the Fiction of Flannery O'Connor."
