Book A Dialog based Intelligent Tutoring System for Practicing Battle Command Reasoning

Download or read book A Dialog based Intelligent Tutoring System for Practicing Battle Command Reasoning written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) developed a dialog-based intelligent tutoring system (ITS) for interactive self-training of battle command reasoning. The system, called "Automated Tutoring Environment for Command" (ATEC), adapted the dialog management capability from AutoTutor (a dialog-based tutor developed by Graesser and colleagues at the University of Memphis) and integrated it with a cognitive model-based instructional agent (using all Systems' iGEN cognitive agent framework). The ATEC system presents a battlefield situation and then initiates a dialog between a virtual mentor (instructional agent) and a student as they collaboratively discuss the situation. The virtual mentor poses questions, evaluates student responses, determines the sequence of questions, and ultimately assesses performance on the basis of the specificity of questioning and the depth of probing and hinting that is needed to adequately answer the questions. The results of the ATEC development effort showed some of the capabilities and limitations of tutorial dialog systems, and indicated areas for additional research and development.

Book Phase II Final Report on an Intelligent Tutoring System for Teaching Battlefield Command Reasoning Skills

Download or read book Phase II Final Report on an Intelligent Tutoring System for Teaching Battlefield Command Reasoning Skills written by Eric A. Domeshek and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents Phase II efforts to develop a Socratic Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) for Teaching Battlefield Command Reasoning Skills. The ultimate goal of this research program is to develop new ITS techniques and technology for teaching skills that cannot be taught as simple methods and procedures to be followed. Achieving expert levels of proficiency in professional-level reasoning skills-whether for battlefield commanders or for professionals in a wide range of other fields-requires extensive practice, coaching, and feedback. Students must be given a chance to drill on detailed and situation-specific knowledge, as well as high-level thinking habits and skills applicable across diverse situations. We studied exemplary coaching by observing tutoring sessions centered on Tactical Decision Games. We analyzed those sessions to identify behaviors that could be enacted and controlled by an automated Socratic tutor. We explored techniques and ultimately built an operational prototype exhibiting many of the key behaviors identified. We also built extensive tools to support authoring of the prototype's knowledge and behavior. This work has produced extensive data, analysis, and implementation, advancing our understanding of, and ability to model, professional-level Socratic tutoring.

Book excerpt: The research reported here aimed at the design of a Socratic Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) for high-level battlefield command reasoning skills. The ultimate goal of this research is to develop new ITS techniques and technology for teaching skills that cannot he taught as simple methods and procedures to he followed. Achieving expert levels of proficiency in high-level command reasoning skills-whether for battlefield commanders or for executives in industry-requires extensive practice, coaching, and feedback. Learners must he given a chance to drill on detailed and situation-specific knowledge, as well as high-level thinking habits and skills applicable across diverse situations. We studied exemplary command reasoning mentoring by observing tutoring sessions centered on Tactical Decision Games (TDGs). We analyzed those sessions to produce a first draft general model of tutoring actions. We also built a limited proof-of-concept prototype that exhibited many of the key behaviors identified. Taken together, the conduct and products of our Phase I work, along with our proven strong team of collaborators, position us well to carry through on the ambitious work plan outlined here for Phase II.

Book Automatic Question Generation and Student Answer Assessment in Dialogue based Intelligent Tutoring Systems

Download or read book Automatic Question Generation and Student Answer Assessment in Dialogue based Intelligent Tutoring Systems written by Nobal B. Niraula and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dialogue-based Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) have already proven to be very effective at inducing learning gains in students. These systems are guided by dialog scripts, the heart of many dialog systems, for the interactions with students. The scripts typically consist of a list of questions and corresponding ideal answers. In most ITSs, such scripts are manually crafted from instructional task descriptions. Such manual efforts not only cost more in terms of time and effort but also set a bottleneck in the scalability of the systems. Another major challenge they face is to automatically assess student answers with respect to the ideal answers. To address these challenges, this research proposes novel approaches to automatically generate questions. Furthermore, it focuses on finding appropriate approaches to assess and understand student responses in the form of natural text inputs. The question generation process generates cloze and open-cloze questions. Cloze questions are automatically generated by mining recorded tutorial dialogues between actual students and a state-of-the-art ITS. It complements the existing systems that rely only on the contents of instructional texts. Open-cloze questions are generated by minimizing human efforts. Specifically, active learning is used to train classifiers for judging the quality of automatically generated open-cloze questions, the most expensive step in generating open-cloze questions. Experiments show that a reasonably good classifier can be built with 300-500 examples labeled by using active learning which can provide about 5-10% more in accuracy and about 3-5% more in F1-measure than random sampling. Towards assessing and understanding student responses, this research addresses pronoun resolution and semantic textual similarity (STS) problems in the context of tutorial dialog. For pronoun resolution, a supervised machine learning approach is proposed which has a F-measure of 88.93%, showing its robustness in resolving pronouns. For assessing student responses, STS methods are used as they provide numeric scores indicating the degrees of equivalence in meaning between student answers and corresponding ideal answers. Since student responses in tutorial dialog are typically short in length, this research seeks to find the best methods for short text-to-text STS. To this end, Latent Dirichlet Allocation-based and regression-based methods are proposed. The methods are found to be very promising for computing short text-to-text semantic similarities. Although approaches to the STS problem provide numeric scores, they fail to explain the reasons behind them. To this direction, an interpretable STS system has been proposed which has been ranked at the top tier of this kind in the literature.

Book Adding an Intelligent Tutoring System to an Existing Training Simulation

Download or read book Adding an Intelligent Tutoring System to an Existing Training Simulation written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Battle Command 2010 (BC2010) is a tactical decision game used by Command Prep Course students at the Command General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth to play battalion level tactical scenarios in a dynamic, 3-D environment. The use of this simulation, however, still required the effort of an instructor to observe the student's actions and provide an after action review (AAR). It was determined that the addition of an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) to BC2010 would off-load the instructor from these duties and allow the students to execute scenarios without requiring an instructor for the AAR. This paper presents the lessons learned from that experience.
