Book excerpt: The aim of the present thesis is to examine the cognitive control mechanisms underlying auditory selective attention by considering the influence of variables that increase the complexity of an auditory scene. Therefore, technical aspects such as dynamic binaural hearing, room acoustics and head movements as well as those that influence the efficiency of cognitive processing are taken into account. Step-by-step the well-established dichotic-listening paradigm is extended into a realistic spatial listening paradigm. Conducted empirical surveys are based on a paradigm examining the intentional switching of auditory selective attention. Performance measure differences between the repetition of the target's spatial position and the related switch describe the loss of efficiency associated with redirecting attention from one target's location to another. To examine whether the irrelevant auditory information is decoded, interference in the processing of task-relevant and task-irrelevant information is created in the paradigm. Using the binaural-listening paradigm, the ability to intentionally switch auditory selective attention is tested when applying different methods of spatial reproduction. Essential differences between real sources, an individual and a non-individual binaural synthesis are found. As a step towards multi-talker scenarios in realistic environments participants are tested in differently reverberating environments, resulting in highly affected switch costs. Age-related effects are found when applying the binaural-listening paradigm, indicating difficulties for elderly to suppress processing the distractor's speech.

Book excerpt: From syllables to fluent speech, it is important for infants to quickly learn and decipher linguistic information. To do this, infants must not only use their auditory perception but also their visual perception to understand speech and language as a multisensory coherent event. Previous research by Lewkowicz and Hansen-Tift (2012) demonstrated that infants shift their allocation of visual attention from the eyes to the mouth of the speaker's face throughout development as they become interested in speech production. This project examined how infants, from 4-14-months of age, allocate their visual attention to increasingly complex speech tasks. In Experiment 1, infants were presented with upright and inverted faces vocalizing syllables and the results demonstrated that in response to the upright faces, 4-month-old infants attended to the eyes and 8- and 10-month-olds attended equally to the eyes and mouth. In response to the inverted face presentation, both the 4- and 10-month-olds attended equally to the eyes and mouth but the 8-month olds attended to the eyes. In Experiment 2, infants were presented with a phoneme matching task (Patterson & Werker, 1999, 2002, 2003) and the results demonstrated that the 4-month-old infants successfully matched the voice to the corresponding face, but that older infants did not. Measures of their selective attention to this task showed that the 4-month-old infants attended more to the eyes of the faces during the task, not attending to the redundant speech information at the mouth, but older infants attended equally to the eyes and mouth, although they did not match the voice to the face. Experiment 3 presented infants with a fluent speech matching task (Lewkowicz et al., 2015) which demonstrated that although the infants (12-14-months) did not systematically match the voice to the corresponding face, the infants attended more to the mouth region, which would have provided them with the necessary redundant information. Overall, these studies demonstrate that there are developmental changes in how infants distribute their visual attention to faces as they learn about speech and that the complexity of the speech is a critical factor in how they allocate their visual attention.

For instance, there exists little scientific vernacular for discussing differences in dichotic and diotic performance under conditions with equivalent information. The following work applies an empirical paradigm that adds noise to the stimulus as a means to study attention to individual components of the stimulus complex. The first part uses a sample discrimination task that presents tones to alternating ears while manipulating parameters such as informativeness, inter-tone interval, and binaural differences in loudness. Only 2 of 9 listeners showed an optimal listening strategy. Most, instead, show a left-ear advantage and are unduly influenced by loud tones that carry little information. The second part examines selective attention to the basic dimensions of sound - pitch, timbre (e.g., roughness), and loudness. Methods were developed to manipulate the stimulus and observe the effect of specific cue. A theoretical model associated with each cue yields a different pattern of decision weights in a discrimination task. Listeners are instructed to attend to target cues and estimated weights quantify the degree of selective attention to that cue. Some listeners matched theoretical predictions, whereas others appear to use a combination of cues, rather than a single cue. I show that there are clear changes to estimated weights that directly reflect perceptual changes to an isolated cue when a second and then a third cue wis introduced. Findings from both sets of studies introduce novel ways to study auditory selective attention and provide initial building blocks for a theoretical framework.
